IN THE NEWS

WGN America canceled Outsiders, its most watched series, ahead of the drama’s April 25 season 2 finale. The news comes on the heels of the net’s best-ever monthly primetime ratings in March among total viewers and its best month in seven years among A25-54, propelled by its two original scripted shows – Outsiders and Underground. Peter Liguori, former WGNA president and CEO, left the company last month. He was at the helm when both series were renewed for second seasons last spring, and had led the charge to relaunch the network as a premium cable net with original programming. Interim chief Peter Kern has emphasized the company plans to expand WGNA’s original fare. Meanwhile, talk has intensified in recent weeks around a potential Tribune sale to rival Sinclair Broadcast Group.

TNT is pulling the plug on its pilot order to drama Let the Right One In, based on the novel by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist. The project was penned by Jeff Davis, creator of Criminal Minds and Teen Wolf. It originally was picked up to pilot in August. Tomorrow Studios, which developed the project, has two other projects at TNT: series Good Behavior, which was renewed for season 2, and pilot Snowpiercer, which is based on the feature film and has begun casting.

Stephen Colbert continues to skyrocket. The late-night host’s Midnight Confessions comedy segment will get a book treatment, to be published by Simon and Schuster (a division of CBS, network home of The Late Show) on September 5. The recurring bit features Colbert in a confessional, making mea culpas for sins including “I tell people I don’t believe in casual sex, but the truth is I sometimes don’t wear a tie.”

NABET-CWA members employed at ABC’s news, sports and entertainment divisions around the country ratified a new four-year contract that comprises more than 2,700 broadcast technicians, news writers, producers, publicists and other support personnel working at the network and its O&O TV stations in LA, NY, Chicago, San Francisco and DC.

Boston’s Fox affiliate WFXT-TV is dropping the word “Fox” from its newscast branding in an effort to avoid viewers confusing the station with Fox News. This according to The Boston Globe, which reports newscasts will be branded as “Boston 25 News” starting April 24.

Star Wars Rebels will wrap up after its upcoming fourth season on Disney XD. The news surfaced during the series panel at Star Wars Celebration in Orlando, FL over the weekend.

Jeff Varner, the Survivor contestant who got voted off the island last week after outing competitor Zeke Smith as a transgender man, has gotten the boot again. Varner told his local newspaper, Greensboro N.C.’s News & Record, he was fired from his job as an agent at NC realty firm Allen Tate.
