NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS
 

Crackle made the official jump into the television Upfronts yesterday, presenting its new slate and updated TV-like app to advertisers at the Hudson Theatre in New York City. Jerry Seinfeld, star of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, kicked off the event, saying that the platform will continue to carry premium content and stay clear of UGC. “The less user-generated-content, the better…this business is for talent,” Seinfeld teased. New shows include: animated comedy SuperMansion, the platform’s first hour-long scripted series The Art Of More and David Spade’s sequel to the 2001 film Joe Dirt. In addition, Crackle will update the app with the Always On experienced powered by Adobe Primetime, which mimics a dayparting schedule and channel guide that begins playing as soon as a user opens the app. The new design will roll out first on Roku devices starting in May. Paul Feig’s new original series Other Space premiered on Yahoo Screen yesterday. The scripted comedy debuted all eight episodes, which features Karan Soni (Safety Not Guaranteed), Bess Rous (Murder in the First), Eugene Cordero (House of Lies), Milana Vayntrub (Silicon Valley), Conor Leslie (Klondike), Neil Casey (Broad City), and the reunion of Trace Beaulieu and Joel Hodgson of Mystery Science Theater. Feig is known for the high school TV comedy Freaks and Geeks and film favorites Bridesmaids and The Office. Yahoo Screen is available for free through the Yahoo Screen App for iOS and Android, on connected devices including Apple TV, Roku, Xbox, TiVo and online.
 
The Travel Channel introduced web series Night Crawl on Travelchannel.com in which host Jawn Murray takes viewers inside New York’s secret hotspots. The series includes five episodes at 4-5 minutes each.
 
Announced at MIPTV in Cannes yesterday: ad-supported movie and TV streaming service Popcornflix launched in 36 countries in Latin America, the Middle East, Russia and China, for an overall total of more than 60. Popcornflix also debuted on the Xbox One and Xbox 360 in the United Kingdom, which marked its first foray on gaming consoles in the territory.
 
YouTube celeb Matthew Santoro (3.75 million subscribers) will host a new food themed series for Quest Nutrition (1 million Facebook “likes”) on its YT channel, premiering the first week of May. Called Food for Thought, Santoro will deliver ten facts in five minutes in each of the first season’s eight episodes. The tidbits will range from roosters twerking to attract hens to the nutritional reason the Jolie-Pitt kids choose to eat crickets. Quest Studios is producing.

ADVERTISING + AD PLATFORMS

 
AOL rolled out One by AOL, a plan announced more than a year ago, to assemble all of its ad properties into a single programmatic platform. One will bring together the buying technologies for display, video and television, inventory access, audience management, measurement and analytics from AOL ad brands such as Adap.tv and Marketplace. The only ad platform that will still be presented outside of One will be Convertro, which AOL acquired last year.
 
Programmatic video platform SpotXchange and video content supplier VideoElephant partnered to supply monetized premium content to publishers. “The fact that publishers can produce only limited amounts of video content internally means premium video inventory is extremely scarce,” VE Chief Marketing Officer Brendan Bourke said. National Geographic, Meredith, Press Association, ITN, Wochit and Videojug are among the publishers providing content to VideoElephant’s fast-growing library of over 130,000 videos spanning 15 categories.

Digital data-driven advertising agency True North hired Sarah Tucker for the new position of Client Development Manager. She was most recently with health and wellness subscription service Liiv.com, where she had been Director of Partnerships since November 2012.

NBCUniversal promoted Chris Czarkowski to Senior Vice President, Hispanic Group Advertising Sales, NBC Universo. With more than 20 years of experience in television advertising sales, he has been with NBCUniversal in 2008 and previously served in a variety of sales roles at Discovery Communications (1992-1997, 2002-2008), Turner Broadcasting (1999-2002) and Europsport (1997-1999).

Studio Toca Boca created a new video division to focus on TV and video for kids, and appointed J Milligan to head up its New York City office. Previously, Milligan ran the content innovation lab and digital media group at Sesame Workshop.
