Stephen Colbert will take the Late Show crown from David Letterman when the late-night host retires next year. "Stephen is a multi-talented and respected host, writer, producer, satirist and comedian who blazes a trail of thought-provoking conversation, humor and innovation with everything he touches," said chairman, CBS Entertainment Nina Tassler. "He is a presence on every stage, with interests and notable accomplishments across a wide spectrum of entertainment, politics, publishing and music." Said Colbert, "I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth."

IN THE NEWS

Where does the Colbert hire leave Late Late Show host Craig Ferguson? Aside from richer by several millions of dollars, thanks to a succession clause in his contract, Ferguson’s late night future is unclear. "We’re having conversations," said CBS CEO Les Moonves on Thursday. "There’s nothing to report now." But Ferguson will be busy in any case: his syndicated game show, Celebrity Name Game, launches in the fall, and he’s exec producer of Science Channel’s upcoming I F-ing Love Science, making a 4Q14 debut.

Veteran journalist James Goldston has been named president, ABC News. Goldston, who had been ABC News SVP, replaces Ben Sherwood, promoted to co-president, Disney/ABC Television Group in the wake of Anne Sweeney‘s decision to leave at year’s end to pursue directing. Goldston "has helped lead ABC News to new heights," said Sherwood, crediting him with reinvigorating Nightline and Good Morning America.

Jane Pauley is joining CBS NewsSunday Morning as a contributor. "We’re really, really happy to have you," said Face the Nation‘s Bob Schieffer, a panelist with Pauley at a Texas Christian University symposium on Wednesday. Pauley, who spent 13 years as co-anchor of NBC‘s Today and was a co-host on Dateline, said since she began her career as a news anchor at a CBS affiliate in Indianapolis in 1972, "I’ve kind of come back home."

As part of the extension of his deal with ESPN, Tony Reali landed the role of social media contributor on sister net ABC‘s Good Morning America. "I love sports and I love ESPN, the Around the Horn" host told Hollywood Reporter. "The chance to have one foot in and one foot out is a dream." Reali will relocate from Washington, D.C. to New York, where Around the Horn will get a new set in Times Square.

NYTVF‘s London lineup includes Toby Whithouse (Being Human) and Richard Warlow (Ripper Street) for "Creative Keynote Conversation." The event, for emerging producers, writers and content creators who want to break into the U.S. market, takes place April 25.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Starz ordered its first original unscripted series, moviemaking competition The Chair. Two directors are given the same screenplay; winner of the $250,000 prize is determined by viewer voting and actual ticket sales at theaters. "It’s a popularity contest," exec producer Chris Moore (Project Greenlight) told EW. "It’s just like every movie we make as producers – at the end of the day we are judged." Ten eps launch in fall 2014.

TNT gave the green light to a series based on The Librarians TV movie trilogy; Rebecca Romijn is set to star. Noah Wyle, now onboard the net’s Falling Skies, will serve as an exec producer, and recur on the show.

COMING UP

Mel Gibson‘s The Passion of the Christ makes its commercial TV premiere on UP on Sunday, April 13 at 9p. Calling it "the cornerstone of our ‘Easter Lives Here’ celebration," UP CEO Charley Humbard tells Cynopsis the movie isn’t just about religion. "The Passion of the Christ is a story of unconditional love: the love of a Mother for her son and the love of a Son for his Heavenly Fatherand for all mankind."

Add Jared Leto, Megan Fox, Jordana Brewster and Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Rita Ora to the roster of presenters for the 2014 MTV Movie Awards. Hosted by Conan O’Brien, the show airs live on Sunday, April 13 at 9p on MTV.

Universal Sports Network, television and digital media home of the Boston Marathon, announced that Survivor: Africa winner Ethan Zohn will serve as the net’s social media correspondent for the 2014 Boston Marathon. "Last year’s tragic events still weigh heavy on our hearts, and I know that this year’s Boston Marathon will continue the healing process and show that Boston is stronger than ever," said Zohn, who was at mile 22 at the 2013 marathon when the bombings occurred.

Nat Geo WILD ordered a second season of Cesar Millan 911 from ITV Studios America, to air in the U.S. and internationally. Season one was the second-highest rated series in WILD history.

Also on the way from Nat Geo Wild: The world premiere special of Africa’s Wild Coast, documenting the health of Gabon’s waters, on Earth Day, Tuesday, April 22 at 8p.

The season premiere of OWN self-help series Iyanla: Fix My Life features rapper/actor Saigon and his on-again, off-again lover and mother to his son, Erica, stars of VH1‘s Love & Hip Hop NY. Show airs Saturday, May 10 at 9p.

Great American Country‘s Moving Country, premiering Wednesday, April 16 at 10p, shows people on the hunt for more laid-back lifestyles – but they’re not the only focus. "As we follow families on the move," said SVP, programming, GAC, HGTV and DIY Steven Lerner, "we have a chance to celebrate America and explore its smaller cities and communities, with a glimpse of the traits and lifestyle unique to each."

Welcome Back Kotter will be added to the Me-TV lineup starting Monday, April 14 at 9:30p. The 1970s comedy, featuring a young John Travolta as Vinny Barbarino, replaces F Troop.

CASTING

Linda Hamilton (The Terminator) has joined the season two cast of Syfy drama Defiance, premiering Thursday, June 19 at 8p.

Geoffrey Blake (Forrest Gump) and Dillon Lane (Bucket and Skinner’s Epic Adventures) are onboard History mini-series Texas Rising (wt).

UPFRONTS UPDATE

At Skylight Modern in NYC, CNN Worldwide president Jeff Zucker took to the stage to announce new CNN documentaries and original series meant to keep viewers tuned in to the news net even when there are no big stories breaking. Starting this summer, the 9p hour once reserved for talk will be given over to specials like Dr. Sanjay Gutpa‘s Weed and Anderson Cooper‘s The Survivor Diaries, and series boasting familiar faces. Mike Rowe (Dirty Jobs) hosts Somebody’s Gotta Do It, Lisa Ling (Our America with Lisa Ling) takes viewers to far corners of America and John Walsh (America’s Most Wanted) headlines criminal investigation show The Hunt with John Walsh. "There are just too many outlets with not enough big gets for a pure talk show to thrive any longer," said Zucker. "And just because CNN has always done a talk show at 9, it doesn’t mean that’s what we should be doing there going forward." 10p will house a live hour of the day’s biggest stories with rotating hosts, called CNN Tonight.

Zucker’s biggest news was the unveiling of CNNx, giving viewers control over the news stories they watch. "The Internet has come crashing into your television," said SVP and GM CNN digital KC Estenson. "This product bolsters our relationships with TV partners, opens incredible new opportunities for advertisers and delivers consumers a truly innovative experience."

Also on the way: The Jesus Code, a forensic look at the Bible, and ten-parter The Sixties.

Albie Hecht, EVP and GM of HLN, said "the first home TV home for the social media generation" has a slate covering many genres, including 2 Spouses, 3 Houses, America’s Most Liked and What’s Trending. "HLN has collaborated with some truly creative minds both internally and externally to build a programming slate designed to heighten the all screen experience – TV, digital and social," said Hecht, who also announced a partnership with Twitter.

WE tv boasted a solid start to 2014, and a significant expansion of its social media following. The net also announced three new unscripted series, Match Made in Heaven, Mystery Millionaire and David Tutera’s CELEBrations, along with its first scripted series, The Divide, and relationship competition pilot, Charlie Sheen’s Bad Influence.

"Successful television networks are built on good shows, and we are excited about these new and returning originals as we continue to build on WE tv’s strong momentum, engage both new and existing viewers and expand our audience base," said Marc Juris, WE tv president. "We are focused on delivering unique concepts and characters that break through the clutter, are buzz worthy and deepen engagement with the network, both on air and online."

FX Networks CEO John Landgraf announced that FXN plans to double its original output, from 11 to over 20 over the next year. Six FX Networks pilots include dramas Hoke and The Bastard Executioner; and comedies How and Why, Man Seeking Woman, SexDrugs&Rock&Roll and the untitled Zach Galifianakis project.

The programming slate for FX and FXX include comedies You’re the Worst, Married, the Comedians, The Partnership, with Kelsey Grammer and Martin Lawrence, and the untitled Tracy Morgan project, as well as dramas Tyrant and The Strain. FX limited series Fargo premieres Tuesday, April 15 at 10p.
