The Weather Channel is returning to DirecTV after a bitter three-month freeze-out, agreeing to cut back on reality programming on weekdays, return instant local weather and allow DirecTV customers to stream its video programming to multiple devices inside and outside the home. "Our apologies to DirecTV and their customers for the disruption of our service and for initiating a public campaign," said Weather Company CEO David Kenny. "Our viewers deserve better than a public dispute and we pledge to reward their loyalty with exceptional programming and more weather-focused news."
Discovery Communications made an investment in DOGTV, a net launched in 2012 with programming created just for canines. The deal involves a strategic partnership with Animal Planet. "DOGTV is a proven tool for relieving stress and anxiety for stay-at-home dogs, and a partnership with Discovery will help accelerate the network’s growth, while making DOGTV even more accessible to dog owners," said Gilad Neumann, DOGTV CEO. Added Rick Holzman, EVP of programming & strategy for Animal Planet, "We are always interested in expanding our audiences – human and canine."
Season nine of NBC‘s America’s Got Talent will look a little different. Host Nick Cannon and judges Howard Stern, Howie Mandel, Mel B and Heidi Klum are back, but the talent competition is introducing the "save," Klum told reporters at a press session Tuesday, with a golden buzzer that will give one kicked-off contestant a second chance. Another change: a boot camp round held in front of a live audience. Talent comes back Tuesday, May 27 at 8p.
CNBC added eight episodes to season two of The Profit. And no wonder: Tuesday’s episode was the most-watched original series telecast ever for the network among P25-54 and total viewers.
Digital series Backpackers, from CW‘s digital studio, CW Seed, will move to broadcast, with 10 new original episodes set to premiere on CW this summer. "Since launching last year, one of our missions for CW Seed was for it to serve as an incubator for new talent and new ideas," said Rick Haskins, EVP, marketing and digital programs. Bravo Media unveiled a diverse slate at its Upfront Tuesday morning at the Andaz Hotel, as well as bragging rights as the number one ranked net for educated, affluent viewers for P18-49 in primetime, and the fifth most social cable net in 2013. "Our strategy of creating a total multi-platform lifestyle experience for our Affluencers is paying off with not just viewership growth across the board, but also loyalty, which is at an all-time high for Bravo," said Frances Berwick, President Bravo & Oxygen Media. "This diversified new lineup, which includes two scripted series and our first ‘real-time’ docu-series, will satisfy fans and also bring in new affluent viewers." New scripted series include comedy Odd Mom Out and Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce, starring Lisa Edelstein (House). As part of a rebrand planned for later this year targeting "young, modern women," Oxygen Media announced at its Upfront seven new series that focus on authentic and relatable characters: music series Fix My Choir, nail design competition Nail’d It!, art competition Street Art Throwdown (wt), Sisterhood of Hip Hop, comedian docu-series Funny Girls (wt), comic anthology series My Crazy Love (wt) and Living Different (wt), about unconventional lifestyles.
The net boasted year-over-year growth among all key demos, up seven percent among F18-34 and five percent among F18-49. "The combination of Oxygen’s current momentum and upcoming rebrand will fully cement the network’s position with young female viewers," said Frances Berwick. "This new slate of originals will deliver on the freshness, authenticity, high emotional stakes and optimism that this demographic is looking for."
UP unveiled an original programming slate that includes 30 new premiere movies and four series. "UP is an expert on its growing audience of family-friendly viewers who are seeking a destination for uplifting, entertaining programming," said Lisa Fischer EVP, ad sales. "We produce more family-friendly movies than any other television network. During this upfront season, we are offering a compelling and ambitious slate of contemporary entertainment viewers will enjoy, distributors will welcome and that advertisers will embrace."
For the second half of 2014, nine original and premiere movies will include My Dad Is a Soccer Mom, Comeback Dad, Rocky Road and Mary Jo’s Candy in summer; Coffee Shop and Match Made in Heaven in the fall and Mistletoe Radio, Paper Angels and Christmas Tree Farm in time for the holidays. Highlights from 2015: biblical epic Noah, true story Life of a King, fish-out-of-water film Stars, Stripes and Accessories and Mothers of the Bride. Now in its 10th year, UP is projected to reach 73 million households in 2015.
CNBC greenlit two new series to premiere this summer: Restaurant Kickstart launched in July with restaurateur Joe Bastianich and celebrity chef, Tim Love, Filthy Rich Guide arrives in August. The net also has three series in development: Restaurant Confidential: New York (wt), Hard Money (wt) and More Money More Problems (wt).
"It’s an exciting time for us in primetime," said Jim Ackerman, SVP, primetime alternative. "The Profit is building a loyal fan base with viewers who want to be entertained but also want to get insights as to why businesses fail and how they can flourish. Pop culture show Dish Nation made big gains versus year ago in the New York market: up 63 percent in HH (1.3 versus .8), up 250 percent among A18-49 (.7 versus .2) and up 200 percent versus year-ago time period among A25-54 (.9 versus .3).
Highlights from Nat Geo‘s summer programming includes two-hour movie Miracle on the Hudson, about the emergency landing of US Airways Flight 1549, told from the passengers’ point of view, on June 22; three-night mini-series, The ’90s: The Last Great Decade, airing Sunday, July 6-Tuesday, July 8 and featuring dozens of interviews with faces that helped define a decade (Newt Gingrich, Kato Kaelin, Vanilla Ice); Brain Games returning Mondays in July for a "Special Summer Blast," and new series Going Deep with David Rees and Wicked Tuna: North vs. South, launching in August.
Great American Country announced the launch of original programming in July. Highway Cowboys tracks a deadly cattle epidemic in Texas, while Junk Gypsies, introduced on sister net HGTV, features two women who turn trash into funky treasure. "These series are just two in our line-up aimed at reaching a desirable consumer segment," said Steven Lerner, SVP of programming and development, "those who have an unwavering pride for country and the lifestyle associated with it, and who have disposable income to boot."
Independent distributor DLT Raydar inked a deal with Russia’s CTC Channel for a local version of its UK sitcom My Family. Local production company Art Pictures Vision will adapt the show, with DLT onboard to consult.
The X Factor might have sputtered stateside, but it’s still a hit in the Ukraine. FremantleMedia struck an agreement with STB for a fifth run of the show, as well as a fourth season for TV Klan in Albania, seasons five and six for Kazakhstan’s Eurasia 1 and three more seasons for Romania’s Antena 1.

NCAA competition didn’t keep syndie’s top talkers down the week ending March 30. Dr. Phil was up 7 percent from the prior week, and while Live with Kelly & Michael inched down 3 percent, the show was up 12 percent versus last year. Steve Harvey was up 5 percent week to week (2.0), and a whopping 33 percent year to year.
The season two premiere of Destination America’s Mountain Monsters on Friday was the net’s best telecast ever among HH rating and delivery (.8/473,000) and second best in P2+ (672,000), outperforming DA’s previous 6-week time period rating average by triple-digit increases in key demos. The week of March 31 was tied for DA’s best-ever week Prime among HH delivery (190,000).
Bounce TV posted its fourth consecutive quarter of growth in 1Q14, up double digits compared to last year in primetime with viewership gains among HH (up 75 percent), P18-49 (up 57 percent) and P25-54 (up 62 percent).
