Barbara Walters‘ last day as a co-host of The View will be Friday, May 16. Walters, who announced her intention to leave the daytime talker a year ago, will remain executive producer. ABC plans a two-hour special that night focused on Walters, who joined the network in 1976.
ABC is making the most of its Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. tie-in to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which debuted to a record-smashing $96.2 million at the box office last weekend. On Tuesday, April 15 at 8p, the net will encore the movie-related "Turn, Turn, Turn" episode airing tonight, followed by a new ep at 9p that also follows game-changing stories from the film.
"We’re in the 18-to-49 business," NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke said at a press luncheon Monday. "Talking about total viewers and households is like talking about yardage in football." Year-round programming is also on tap for NBC, including three reality series and six scripted shows this summer. As for any chance that Jay Leno might take retiring David Letterman‘s late night seat at CBS, Burke said NBC is in talks with the former Tonight Show host about specials.
Showtime is offering the first ep of new climate change docu-series Years of Living Dangerously early across multiple platforms, including YouTube and the Showtime web site, ahead of its premiere Sunday, April 13 at 10p. Stars onboard include Harrison Ford, Matt Damon and Jessica Alba.
The Who‘s Pete Townshend co-wrote a song for FX‘s The Americans, with composer Nathan Barr. The result? "We were simply blown away," said Americans’ exec producers Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields. The episode premieres Wednesday, April 30 at 10p.

Syfy announced mythological series Olympus, featuring characters from mythology "in a way never before imagined," said Chris Regina, SVP Programming. The 13-part series from Reunion Pictures and Olympus TV (London) Limited in association with Great Point Media starts production this summer in Vancouver and London, for a 2015 launch.
Nat Geo is taking another leap with live programming. In Free Dive Live with William Trubridge, the world champion diver will attempt to swim deeper than anyone has before, on a single breath. At Dean’s Blue Hole in the Bahamas, Trubridge will swim down a record-breaking 350 feet.

Zombie alert: Syfy is offering a fresh take on the undead in Z Nation, debuting this fall. A&E gave the green light to a third season of Bates Motel. Season two premiered on March 3 with 4.6 million viewers and 2.6 million A18-49; production for season three begins in fall 2014.

Nielsen and CBS announced the results of a proof of concept for local television plus radio audience measurement. The POC combined audience data from CBS’ local TV and radio assets and measured combined and unduplicated reach across both media; in some cases, using local television and radio together doubled the reach. Nielsen intends to open participation in the pilot across a wider group of clients to further strengthen cross-media selling models.
ZenithOptimedia predicts U.S. ad spending will increase by 4.9 percent, to $176 billion in 2014, up from 2013’s $167 billion, reports AdWeek. Television will account for 40 percent of ad spend, growing 5.2 percent.
Crown Media Family Networks said it will be the first cable programmer to utilize The Cambridge Group‘s super-consumer analysis in the 2014/2015 Upfront season. The data, compiled in conjunction with Nielsen Catalina Solutions, indicates that for many brands the top 10 percent of buyers are driving up to 40 percent of revenues, particularly in the packaged goods category. "We are always looking for new ways to raise our value proposition in the marketplace and this data gets to the heart of what matters most to our clients – reaching the right audience and optimizing ROI," said Bill Abbott, president and CEO, Crown Media Family Networks.
Taco Bell takes another swipe at McDonald’s in a new ad, featuring a man locked in the 80s unwrapping his Egg McMuffin as he sings, to the tune of "Old MacDonald Had a Farm," that he’s been eating the breakfast sandwich since 1984. As soon as he tries a Waffle Taco, though, he chops off his mullet and gets a smart phone. The ad follows a spot featuring real men named Ronald McDonald professing their love of Taco Bell’s breakfast.
First run broadcast syndication property The Pinkertons, distributed by Rohrs Media Group, has been sold in over 70 percent of the country to multiple major groups including Tribune, Hearst, Weigel, Sinclair, Lockwood, Meredith, LIN, Cox, Journal Broadcast, Gray, Schurz, Nexstar and the CW Plus for a fall 2014 debut. "Stations are clamoring for first run original content that competes with the best programs on cable," said Rohrs president John Rohrs, "and that is exactly what The Pinkertons will provide."
ITV Studios Global Entertainment signed a deal to distribute Star China hit Sing My Song to the global television market, the first time an original Chinese talent show format has been distributed internationally.
Fox Broadcasting Company picked up trivia game show format BOOM! from Keshet DCP. The ticking-clock format went to TF1 in France.
Entertainment One secured multiple international deals for new dramas from its exclusive multi-year output deal with the AMC Networks, including Halt and Catch Fire to Canal+ and Turn to OCS in France, multiple seasons of Hell On Wheels to LoveFilm and Watchever in Germany as well as NOW in Russia, The Walking Dead for Media Access in Pakistan, RTL in French Belgium and TV Peretz in Russia.
Electus acquired rights to food game show Crazy Market from CJ E&M. The show currently airs in Korea.
Zodiak Rights has licensed its game show concept, Versus, to Danish broadcaster, DR Danish Broadcasting Corporation.
Azteca and Cisneros Media Distribution, producers of telenovelas, and digital content distributor AfricaXP have launched Romanza+Africa, a new channel for English-speaking audiences in Africa. "Telenovelas have become very popular in the region in recent years," said Marcel Vinay Hill, VP of international sales at Azteca. "Through a dedicated channel such as Romanza+Africa we will give fans instant access to a vast library of great content."
Showtime‘s Shameless and House of Lies had strong finishes on Sunday. Shameless’ season four finale delivered its biggest telecast of the season and highest-rated finale ever with 1.93 million viewers at 9p and 2.8 million viewers for the night, the series’ best total night ever. House of Lies ended its third season with 731,000 viewers at 10p and 1.4 million viewers for the night, its best finale night ever.
CBS‘s telecast of the 49th ACM Awards on Sunday was first in viewers (14.4 million) and A18-49 (3.3/9), according to preliminary Nielsens, down 20 percent from 2013 but above 2010-12. CBS won Sunday in viewers for the fifth straight week, with 13.1 million.
HBO‘s Game of Thrones drew a record 6.6 million viewers for its premiere on Sunday, to best its previous high of 5.5 million last season. Including the night’s second airing, viewers reached 8.2 milion.
Revolutionary War-set Turn premiered Sunday night to a promising 2.1 million viewers, with 1.1 million more tacked on for a repeat viewing of the new AMC drama.
