IN THE NEWS

Well-reviewed but low-rated Man Seeking Woman was cancelled by FXX after 3 seasons. The comedy was averaging 367,000 total viewers and 268,000 among A18-49.

NBC is keeping Chris Hardwick busy. A day after it was announced the @midnight host would exec produce and host its alternative science series The Awesome Show, NBC named Hardwick host of its Red Nose Day Special, airing Thursday, May 25 at 10p. Other programs included in the fundraising effort include American Ninja Warrior, airing a first-ever celebrity edition at 8p, and Julia Roberts traveling to Kenya on Running Wild with Bear Grylls for Red Nose Day at 9p. This will be NBC’s third year as part of the annual campaign to raise money for and awareness of children living in poverty.

MGM agreed to acquire all of Viacom, Lionsgate and Paramount’s interests in premium pay television network Epix, for about $1 billion. Under the deal, which gives MGM a distribution platform for its film and TV content, Paramount Pictures and Lionsgate will continue to provide first-run theatrical releases to Epix. “As Viacom executes against its new strategy, we welcome the opportunity to strengthen our balance sheet by realizing the value of our equity investment, while also extending the successful commercial partnership between Epix and Paramount Pictures with a new multi-year output agreement,” said Bob Bakish, president and CEO of Viacom.

After upwards of 20 advertisers fled Fox News Network’s The O’Reilly Factor following the New York Times report that $13 million had been paid to settle lawsuits to women claiming harassment for the host’s inappropriate behavior, President Trump weighed in. “I don’t think Bill did anything wrong,” said the man who once bragged about grabbing women by the private parts. Trump did acknowledge one O’Reilly misstep: “He shouldn’t have settled.” O’Reilly says the allegations are without merit; Fox News has been redirecting O’Reilly Factor ad buys to other FNC shows.

Raycom Media reached a deal to by WVUE 8 in New Orleans for a reported $51.9 million. “Raycom Media has a proud heritage throughout Louisiana,” said Pat LaPlatney, Raycom Media president and CEO, “and we will continue to serve the community and our viewers with the highest of standards.” Raycom has been managing the station for the Louisiana Media Company since 2013.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Freeform gave a straight-to-series order for Marvel’s New Warriors, the second project from the network, Marvel Television and ABC Signature. The comedic live-action adaptation of the Marvel comic will be Marvel’s first dive into comedy for a TV series. Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger is also underway at Freeform.

Entertainment One
renewed its first-look deal with documentary production company Creature Films. Launched in April 2015, the partnership has yielded Streets of Compton and L.A. Burning: The Riots 25 Years Later, among other projects.

Fred Golan signed an overall deal with Sony Pictures Television. In addition to continuing as exec producer for Amazon’s Sneaky Pete, Golan will develop new projects for broadcast, cable and streamers.

The Decades Network ordered six episodes of Then Again with Herbie J Pilato, a 30-minute talkfest dedicated to classic television and TV stars. For more on the project, read the new Cynsiders.

ADVERTISING & UPFRONTS

Show and tell: NBCUniversal’s Upfront brand campaign will include, for the first time, original advertisements to run on its networks through the company’s Upfront event on May 15. Additional campaign creative and content will run on NBCUniversal digital sites and the platforms of the company’s strategic partners including Apple News, BuzzFeed,Snap Inc.and Vox Media, demonstrating NBCUniversal’s Audience Studio advanced advertising capabilities. “For this year’s Upfront messaging, we’re going beyond the traditional trade media buy and taking advantage of our own assets because we know there’s no better way to scale a marketing campaign across platforms and target the audiences we need to reach than with what’s right within our own portfolio,” said Linda Yaccarino, chairman, advertising sales and client partnerships, NBCUniversal.

Another NBCUni update: Cadillac has signed on for custom advertising experiences created by NBCUni within Apple News that let users, among other things, tap their devices to find Cadillac dealers. The goal is to raise awareness of the auto’s tech feature; the ads target people interested in driving high-tech cars. “Leveraging this new platform within Apple News is an organic fit to tell our own technology story with the Cadillac CT6 Plug-In,” said Renee Rauchut, Cadillac director of content and media.

History and the Ram Truck brand are teaming for “Stories from The Longest Road,” a campaign featuring native and branded content solutions. Anchored Tuesday nights this month, “Stories” will feature linear native and branded content, added value and paid commercial spots in primetime. “Native content is all about context, and History’s strong brand and reputation for storytelling allows us to seamlessly tie together our programming with Ram’s ‘Longest Lasting’ brand values,” said Peter Olsen, EVP ad sales, A+E Networks.

Forrester didn’t mince words in new report, saying the digital ad supply is “riddled with problems, most directly connected to the lack of transparency in ad tech. The result is wasted time, effort, and money, and lackluster ROI.” If steps are not taken to address issues of poor ad quality and fraud, says the report, issues that cost marketers $7.4 billion in 2016 will cost them $10.9 billion by 2021.

Upcoming daily TwentiethTelevision news and gossip show Page Six TV, from the New York Post and Endemol Shine North America, is set for a September 2017 premiere, passing the key 90% clearance threshold across the county. Michael Teicher, EVP of media sales for Twentieth, reports agency marketing partners are expressing enthusiasm for the brand, which will reach across platforms. “As a core focus of our upfront presentations we not only share the merits of our young, plugged-in, pop culture focused viewer, but offer the ad community brand integration and custom content opportunities,” notes Teicher.

Azteca America took its Upfronts road show to NYC yesterday. Execs including Manuel Abud, president and CEO; Craig Geller, EVP, network sales and digital; and Margarita Black, VP of programming joined were joined by network talent Veronica del Castillo, Lourdes Figueroa and 2016 Miss Universe Iris Mittenaere at The Times Center to share programming highlights. “After three years of experiencing substantial ratings growth, we are excited to present the most robust lineup to ever air on our screen,” said Abud. “These programming investments further reinforce Azteca America’s commitment to our audience by delivering relevant, world-class programming of the highest production quality and expanding our distribution to reach more U.S. Hispanic households.”

Among the highlights on the Azteca slate are drama El Muro (The Wall), set on the border between Arizona and Mexico; El Manicomio (Mental Hospital), a thriller following a reporter working undercover to find out the truth about her grandmother’s death; prison thriller Vis a Vis, and Relatos Misterios (Mystical Tales), offering documentary-style dramatizations of mysteries. Azteca also announced that for the third consecutive year, it will be the exclusive Spanish-language broadcaster of the Miss Universe Competition.
