Sideloading : The phrase sideloading refers to the transferring of data between two local devices. Typically, sideloading involves a data transfer between a computer and a mobile device such as a smartphone, tablet, or portable media player.
And now there’s another one. According to Bloomberg, it appears Verizon is planning to enter the OTT-based live TV space this summer, and in the process of securing streaming rights from TV network owners. The service will reportedly be independent of Verizon’s FiOS home TV service, as well as from its go90 mobile video service. Not too many other details are known about the service just yet, and Verizon hasn’t publicly commented. You can check out Bloomberg’s report here.
Snapchat just got more user-friendly. The messaging app has added a search engine for Stories, its photo- and short video-sharing feature. The move will let users search for content from over a million Stories users. Snapchat points out that users can choose to make their Stories unsearchable by sharing them only with their friends. The search feature began its roll-out on Friday, starting with select U.S. cities.

Looks like Amazon is customizing its Silk web browser for Fire TV devices. Tech blog AFTVNews discovered that when the Silk app is sideloaded onto Fire TVs, a tutorial describing TV-specific features becomes available. Those features include the ability to use Fire TV’s integrated microphone for voice search, and the ability to select videos embedded in webpages and play them in full-screen. (The voice search feature doesn’t actually work yet.) Amazon hasn’t commented on when the new feature might officially debut.
The VR market is growing a little more slowly than some expected, but that doesn’t mean it’s not growing. A new analysis from ABI Research projects that the global VR market will likely be worth more than $60 billion by 2021. ABI finds that there are currently more than 460 companies operating within the VR space, with over 60% of them focused on content distribution, creating VR applications, or working on VR systems themselves. Over 35% of the companies are focused on media and entertainment content, which is less than you might expect. 10% are focused on retail and marketing, while other areas include construction, real estate, and architecture. When all’s said and done, ABI says that VR isn’t likely to go the way of 3D TV. “[T]he wealth of companies active in this space and deep-seeded belief in VR stand in marked contrast to the short-lived heyday of 3D,” stated Michael Inouye, ABI’s Principal Analyst.
Twitch may be best known as a live-streaming platform for gamers, but the scope of its content is growing all the time. The latest example: Twitch will stream three of Amazon’s new 2017 pilots, including half hour comedies Budding Prospects and The Legend of Master Legend, and sci-fi drama Oasis. The pilots will air back-to-back on April 5, starting at 1 PM ET/4 PM ET. It’s no shock that Twitch would feature Amazon content; the latter owns the former.
Funny or Die’s TV show may have gone off the air in 2011, but that doesn’t mean the digital media company is done with television altogether. Under a new pact, IM Global Television will begin selling content from Funny or Die’s library as a package to TV outlets, as well as to digital ones. All told, IM Global TV will have over 800 hours of Funny or Die-produced content to work with. The partnership will officially get underway this week, at the Mip TV programming convention in Cannes.
Up top, we mentioned Bloomberg’s report that Verizon is planning to enter the OTT TV fray. Not coincidentally, the telco just named a new exec to head up its Network and Technology team. Hans Vestberg, who officially joins the company today, is best known as the former President & CEO of Ericsson, a post he held from 2010-2016. He’ll now hold an EVP title at Verizon, reporting directly to Chairman and CEO Lowell McAdam. He’ll be based in Sweden to start, with plans to relocate to the U.S. later this spring.
Hulu is losing its marketing chief. The company confirmed that SVP Jenny Wall, who’s been with Hulu since 2014, is moving on. (The decision to leave is said to have been her own.) Wall’s departure comes it a big moment for Hulu, as the company prepares to launch a much-anticipated OTT TV service. The company is also in the midst of making changes to its programming team. That includes searching for a new Chief Content Officer to oversee content acquisitions and originals, and recently narrowing the role of Head of Content Craig Erwich to focus solely on original programming.
Tang Media Partners has named a new exec. The financing and production company, which has a particular focus on strengthening ties between Hollywood and China, has named Gabriel VanHuss as VP of Franchise Management in its content development division. VanHuss most recently served at Activision Blizzard’s Blizzard Entertainment, where he held various roles over the course of eight years. At TMP, he’ll be tasked with managing the company’s partnerships with networks, studios, game developers, publishers, and mobile and streaming companies.
Earlier this year, it was revealed that Crackle had lost its oldest show (and biggest star) to Netflix. What was the show?
Our Last Trivia Question: One of the two co-creators of Netflix’s Grace and Frankie is Howard J. Morris. The other one is best known for co-creating one of the most popular sitcoms in TV history. Who is it? Answer: Marta Kauffman, who also co-created Friends alongside David Crane. Kudos to Deborah Lake-Viacom/NY, Susan Nessanbaum-Goldberg-M and S entertainment/CA, Lorrie Shilling-CA, Anjali Desai – Departure Films/NY, Tom Moore-Kalt Productions/CA, Bob Eisenstaedt-Granite Springs Productions/FL, Andrew Bellamy-Producers Guild of America/NY, Aaron Paquette-Screen Engine/ASI/TX, Mathew Tombers-Intermat, Inc./NY, Mary Bender-PBS/VA
