ADVERTISING

TV could be the key to boosting voice purchases on voice-controlled devices like Amazon’s Echo and Google Home, according to a Connekt study from OC&C Strategy Consultants. In the study, of the 25% of respondents that report owning a voice device, 8% have purchased an item directly through it. However, the majority said they’re open to buying items they see in TV using their voice assistant – 73% would buy a product featured in a TV program and 74% would buy one featured in a commercial. “To date, voice assistants have mainly been used for things like music and price checking, but TV could be the conduit to change all of that,” said Tripp Boyle, SVP for Connekt. “Our research suggests consumers are highly receptive to the idea of linking their voice devices to their TVs, and purchasing products they see on their screens with just a couple of sentences. The potential here is massive for brands and advertisers.”

Fox News host Laura Ingraham announced she’d be taking off this week for Easter break with her children. The announcement came after about a dozen advertisers pulled out of the show following Ingraham’s tweet about Parkland survivor David Hogg “whining” about being rejected from four colleges. While Ingraham’s apology didn’t stem the tide of advertiser defections, her fans launched an #IStandWithLaura boycott of said advertisers.

DIGITAL DATA

Facebook found itself under fire again when an internal memo surfaced from top exec Andrew “Boz” Bosworth. BuzzFeed published the 2016 memo, which talked about connecting people. “That can be bad if they make it negative,” wrote Bosworth. “Maybe it costs a life by exposing someone to bullies. Maybe someone dies in a terrorist attack coordinated on our tools.” Bosworth quickly tweeted that he doesn’t agree with the post and just wrote it to stir debate, while Mark Zuckerberg issued a statement that said while “Boz is a talented leader who says many provocative things,” he strongly disagrees with the memo, recognizing it’s the company’s mission to bring people closer together.

Accenture Is acquiring publisher Meredith’s digital agency, Meredith Xcelerated Marketing, which specializes in data-driven content, marketing strategy and creative development.

About two dozen people lost their jobs at Amazon-owned game service Twitch. Citing “an aggressive growth strategy,” a spokesperson said despite the cutbacks, the company plans to increase head count by approximately 30% in 2018.

CASTING

Leading the cast of Freeform comedy pilot Girl Code (wt) are Sophia Di Martino (Flowers) and Kirby Howell-Baptiste (Downward Dog), as odd couple partners running an all-female tech incubator.

Emily Ratajkowski (Easy), Shameik Moore (The Get Down), Calum Worthy (American Vandal), and YouTube personalities Jimmy Tatro and Lilly Singh will star in NBC comedy pilot Bright Futures, narrated by Friend Lisa Kudrow.

GOING GLOBAL

Amazon’s report on its UK gender pay gap wasn’t pretty: Men at the SVOD service are paid 56% more than women on a mean basis and 40.1% on a median basis. Disney reported paying men 22% more than women. But it’s not all bad news: NBCUniversal pays men 3.2% more on a mean basis and 6.2% on a median bases, reports the company, but factor in bonuses and women make 5.5% more on a mean basis and 23% more on a median basis. Channel 5 pays women 2.85% more on a mean basis. The national average is 17.4% on a mean basis and a median gap of 18.4%.
