Taking its spot this Friday: a repeat of last season’s Kitchen Nightmares finale. Rake debuted in the post-American Idol Thursday slot before relocating to Fridays on March 14.
BBC America has already picked up season two of The Musketeers, a fresh take on the Alexandre Dumas characters that doesn’t debut stateside until June 22. Sophomore run starts in 2015.
Telemundo has signed TV personality Raul Gonzalez to develop and host a new variety series for the net, as well as contribute to other series and specials. First assignment: co-hosting the Billboard Latin Music Awards Presented by State Farm on Thursday, April 24 at 7p.
Telemundo and NBCUniversal Domestic TV Distribution are launching a co-branded weekly segment, "Access Hollywood Al Rojo Vivo," to air every Friday on Telemundo news magazine Al Rojo Vivo con Maria Celeste. Hearst Television Inc. announced it is renewing and expanding its pledge to devote extensive coverage of election discourse under its "Commitment 2014" banner. Building on a record-breaking 2013 (72 million viewers per month), HGTV and DIY Network will premiere 31 new series, bring back over 54 shows and debut 24 specials in 2014. As part of its eight-city 2014 Upfront tour, Scripps Networks Interactive will hold its fourth presentation in LA at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills today. Upcoming presentations include Chicago (4/9), New York (4/22), Atlanta (4/28) and Minneapolis (5/1). Stars attending today’s presentation include DIY Network’s William Shatner and HGTV’s Property Brothers.
"Buyers will find that HGTV and DIY Network continue to offer a spectrum of programs in the ‘home’ category that makes us the best at attracting the coveted upscale viewer that advertisers want," Kathleen Finch, president, HGTV and DIY Network, tells Cynopsis. Ahead at HGTV: Eight new series, including The Jennie Garth Project. Premiering in June, the show follows single mom Garth (Beverly Hills, 90210) as she renovates a dated Hollywood Hills, CA. Flipping the Block features four couples competing to win big money at auction in the ultimate home-flipping competition, and Flip It Forward stars real estate entrepreneurs and brothers David and Jason Benham as they help families find a fixer-upper and transform it into a dream home. Fixer Upper has a husband and wife home-remodeling team balancing business with parenting, and My Big Family Renovation follows Austin, Texas-based author and popular mommy blogger Jen Hatmaker move and remodel.
At DIY, the brand is expanding its "celebrity home rehab" group with The Shatner Project, a series that follows the home renovation of William Shatner (Star Trek), and Daryl’s Restoration Over-Hall, premiering in May, starring singer/songwriter Daryl Hall (Hall & Oates).
DIY will also debut Sledgehammer, starring popular licensed contractor Jason Cameron; First Time Flippers, featuring overzealous property; Family Under Construction: Hawaii, following a family of five’s home renovation in Hawaii, and Disaster Decks, with designer/carpenter Paul LaFrance.
The networks’ popular home giveaway franchise will continue with HGTV’s Dream Home in Lake Tahoe; HGTV’s Smart Home in Nashville; and a new HGTV Urban Oasis. On DIY Network’s Blog Cabin, viewers will have the chance to help design the 2014 vacation home, a 1920s lakeside getaway.
Talk shows Tricia and The Test have been cancelled. NBC Universal‘s Tricia is averaging a .6 HH rating and .4 in W25-54; CBS Television Distribution‘s The Test is also averaging .6 and .4 ratings.
Fishing, hunting and camping gear will be on display during Outdoor Channel’s "Spring Fever" sweepstakes. Daily prize offerings from participating sponsors like Mossy Oak and Shell Rotella will be up for grabs, with the grand prize a camper. The multi-platform campaign drives viewers to a dedicated microsite to enter.
Non-fiction content company Off the Fence struck a deal with new South East Europe broadcaster In The Box TV to provide 3,000 hours of factual programming over two years, to be shown on some of the 12 new channels launching September 1. Shows include titles from Off the Fence’s distribution partnerships with WE tv (Amazing Wedding Cakes, Platinum Weddings, My Fair Wedding) and Smithsonian Networks (Aerial America, Aliens Inside Us), and from Off the Fence’s own content.
getTV, Sony Pictures Television Networks‘ new digital broadcast net, is adding four major market TV stations from the Cox Media Group: WAXN-TV in Charlotte, NC; KIRO-TV in Seattle, WA; and KMYT-TV in Tulsa, OK. In the summer, getTV adds WTEV-TV in Jacksonville, FL.

How I Met Your Mother went out with a bang Monday night, with the CBS show’s ninth and final season-ender earning series highs in viewers, A18-49 (5.4/16), A18-34 (5.9/20) and A25-54 (5.5/14). At 9p, the series premiere of the net’s Friends with Better Lives averaged 8 million viewers and 2.6/7 in A18-49.
What zombies? On Sunday night, Showtime‘s Shameless had its best night ever, delivering 2.8 million viewers for the night. Season-to-date, Shameless’ season 4 averages 5.7 million weekly viewers, up 8 percent vs. last season, on track to rate as its highest-rated season ever. The net’s House of Lies had its best night of the season with 1.44 million viewers for the night; season-to-date, season 3 is averaging 3 million weekly viewers.
Turner Sports and CBS Sports‘ coverage of the NCAA Basketball Championship across TBS, CBS, TNT and truTV is delivering its highest viewership since 1993. Through the first two weeks, the NCAA Tournament is averaging 9.8 million total viewers; Saturday’s two Elite Eight games on TBS delivered the most-viewed college basketball games in cable television history. Wisconsin versus Arizona averaged 9.9 million total viewers, and Florida versus Dayton averaged 7.2 million total viewers to rank first and second of all time.
March madness took its toll on syndication. Dr Phil (which airs on numerous CBS stations and aired repeats four of five days), usually the talk leader, was down 18 percent and had to settle for a tie for second place with Ellen DeGeneres (2.7, up 4 percent), which was in originals all week. Live with Michael & Kelly was the top talker, even with just two shows live and three repackaged.
DIY Network had its highest-rated and most-watched quarter ever, attracting 4.5 million viewers during prime time each week, with the net’s P25-54 prime time audience growing 17 percent over 1Q13. "We’ve been laying the foundation for this growth for months," said Allison Page, GM, HGTV and DIY. "We’ve got killer series in production to keep the momentum going."
A visit from Vice President Joe Biden gave Rachael Ray a sweet bump. The show grew 15 percent in metered markets (1.5/5) the day of the veep’s appearance March 31, compared to the prior Monday.
OWN boasts its most-watched quarter ever, averaging 508,000 total viewers and delivering double-digit growth across all demos versus the previous quarter, up 32 percent W25-54, up 48 percent total viewers and up 47 percent African-American W25-54.
The Saturday season finale of Hallmark Channel’s When Calls the Heart reached nearly 2.7 million unduplicated viewers. The finale ranked number three in HHs and P2+ for 9-10pm, scoring a 1.9 rating and .9 rating, and placed number 3 in HHs (1,666,000) and P2+ (2,066,000).
Sunday’s Total Divas was the E! series’ second most-watched episode ever and best this season-to-date with 1.55 million total viewers, 616,000 W18-49 and 416,000 W18-34.
