The Top 3 Mistakes Job Candidates Make in Interviews

I have worked as a manager for a long time and have interviewed and hired dozens of people. (I have had to let employees go, too, and have been let go myself, but that’s another column that I will write someday. And believe me, it will be a juicy one). Anyway, there’s a definite pattern that has emerged among successful candidates and those who have been, let’s say, memorable for the wrong reasons.

So in a climate with lots of great execs at many levels losing positions due to tech crunches and consolidations, here are a few recommendations of missteps to avoid when you’re in the interviewee’s seat.

– Don’t complain about the place you’re currently working or just left.
Seems like a no-brainer, right? Wrong. You cannot believe how many job seekers have gone on at length in interviews about their micro-managing boss, their toxic teammates, the low pay, the long hours, the lack of vision, the absence of process, or the scarcity of resources. Don’t get me wrong – these factors might all be extremely true and the exact reason(s) why you left, as well as why you are secretly delighted you don’t work there anymore. But it makes you look unprofessional and immature to be blabbing about it in a business conversation for a job you may or may not get. It also comes off to a manager like a snapshot of what this person might be saying about them five years from now after working at their company. So zip it. Say something bland like, “I needed a new challenge” if you’re asked. They’ll know your boss was probably a monster – but you’re smart enough not to badmouth her. That means you have good judgment. Bosses love good judgment.

– Not doing any research about the job you’re applying for
This one kills me every time it happens. FYI, it’s Interview Question 101 to ask a candidate if they’ve looked at the website or read the newsletter that this job is hiring into regardless of the department. So yes, I expect even someone applying for a marketing position to have read and have a passing familiarity with the content of our newsletter or website. They don’t have to like it or be prepared with a deep analysis, but a comment on a recent post or item tells me that they took the time to read our product, or to even comment on a larger story in our industry that we might be covering. To not do that tells me that a) they’re applying for everything in sight, b) they’re not that interested in our specific position, or c) this is how they would approach their duties if hired. Pass.

– Not asking for the job at the end of the interview
Again, this should be a layup, but I have seen it blown again and again. As an interview wraps up, people may thank me for my time, and they will likely send a follow-up email. And that’s fine, of course. Much more powerful, however, is to say that the conversation made them more excited about the opportunity, and that they want the job. I mean, come on – wouldn’t you be more likely to hire someone who isn’t afraid to tell you that they’re hot to work at your company? I can tell you – as a manager – that I appreciate the confidence of someone who lets me know that they want the position I have to offer. I like someone with gumption. I might not hire them. But I respect their nerve. You bet I do.

Malhotra was most recently EVP, Nonfiction Programming at Showtime. Tonia Davis, previously Head of Film and TV at Higher Ground, has been named Head of Motion Pictures.

101 Films has appointed Marzenna Czubowicz as Director of Acquisitions. Czubowicz was most recently Acquisition Consultant at Sky and Sky Showtime.

Two hires at Loud Minds: Tim Haines, showrunner for Netflix’s “Earthstorm,” has taken the position of Head of Development for unscripted content. Emma Parkin has joined from Pioneer Productions as a development executive.

The Ad Council has tapped DJ Perera to serve as Chief Media Officer. She succeeds Kathy Kayse, who will be retiring on May 12 after leading the Media team for 5 years. Prior to joining the Ad Council, Perera led Boehringer Ingelheim’s US Media Center of Excellence. In addition, The Ad Council elected 19 new members to its Board of Directors.

Playground is upping Scott Huff and David Stern to joint Managing Directors, handling the day-to-day management of the UK and US operations of the company.
