Twitter has accepted Elon Musk’s offer to buy the company for $44 billion. “Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” said Musk. “I also want to make Twitter better than ever by enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans.” On April 14, Musk offered to buy Twitter for $54.20 per share, which was the final purchase price.

Local TV content is increasingly a priority for viewers, according to TiVo’s report, “Finding the Balance in the Great Rebundling.” Eighty-four percent of people surveyed said local content like news and sports is important, while only 8% don’t watch local content. When it comes to SVOD users, the study found 54% wished their service offered free, ad-supported versions.

Hulu has acquired US streaming rights for Canadian hit series “Overlord and the Underwoods.” The family comedy, following a family whose life is turned upside down when their distant cousin, the second most-wanted villain in the universe, seeks refuge in their home after being forced into intergalactic witness protection, will land on Hulu in the summer of 2022.

Vice Media unveiled its 2022-23 programming slate. “This year we are making bigger bets and we’re responding to what our audiences have asked for,” said Nancy Dubuc, CEO of VICE Media Group. “We continue to go places others can’t and won’t.” Just a few examples: Season two of “Transnational,” a series made by and centered around trans and queer voices; “Breaking the Vote,” a video series looking at attempts to rig the 2022 election; and season two of “Planet A,” exploring solutions to climate change and environmental degradation.

WPP is launching Everymile, and end-to-end commerce solution adding demand generation, online trading and merchandising, supply chain and logistics to existing ecommerce offerings. “The last couple of years have changed the way people shop forever,” said Mark Read, CEO of WPP. “The acceleration of ecommerce, the shift to customers buying direct from brands, and the increasing importance of social in the commerce journey, have all meant that there is a demand for a fully managed service with omnichannel expertise. WPP is a leader in commerce services, with existing strength in strategy, creativity and integrated experience, and now is the perfect time to launch the Everymile service.”

Roku is expanding its Measurement Partner Program to include media mix modeling, helping tie ad exposure data to outcome data on a household level. “We believe comprehensive media measurement is critical to understanding how effective our plans are at reaching humans with breakthrough ad experiences,” said Michael Piner, EVP of Advanced Media at Mediahub. “The addition of MMM in Roku’s Measurement Partner Program will allow us to more effectively measure the impact of streaming TV in media mixes through a zoom-out lens to ensure we’re delivering the optimal TV ad experience.”

Now through the end of June, Spectrum Reach is committing $15 million in advertising, resources and creative support to provide small businesses in more than 40 markets with its local advertising expertise, products and services through the “Pay it Forward” program. Spectrum Reach first introduced “Pay it Forward” last year, helping multiculturally-owned businesses in communities across the country. This year, the program has expanded to include multicultural and women-owned businesses, doubling the number of participants.

Sports Video Group has teamed with YOSY Media to engage qualified students at the nation’s top Historically Black Colleges and Universities in careers in sports broadcasting, production, and other industry opportunities. The new initiative, “HBCU Bridge,” will help connect broadcasters, leagues, teams, and production companies with students who want to enter the industry via paid internships, apprenticeships, or fulltime employment.

HBO is adapting Dave Eggers novel The Every, about a woman determined to take down a massive, yet beloved, tech/ecommerce company, for TV. “In this equally terrifying and hilarious cautionary tale, Dave Eggers shows us the increasing cost of the frictionless life that technology enables,” said Amy Gravitt, EVP, HBO Programming. “As he writes, ‘Nothing described herein actually happened, though much of it likely will,’ and what better starting point for an HBO comedy script?”

Roku has three new dating offerings on tap for 2023. Social experiment “The Marriage Pact” (wt), from Maven, follows long-time singles who must fulfill or break a pact they made to marry by a certain age, while “Match Me in Miami” (wt), from Lime Pictures, is set in a matchmaking agency. Feature film “To Paris for Love: A Reality Rom Com” centers on three single friends looking for love in the City of Light. The feature comes from Hello Sunshine and Cinestar Pictures.

Actor/singer/producer Diego Boneta (“Luis Miguel: The Series”) and his Three Amigos signed an overall deal with Prime Video. Productions from the partnership will join Prime Video’s slate of Mexican Amazon Originals.

Casting notes: Added to the cast of Paramount+ UK original series “The Ex-Wife” are Tom Mison (“Sleepy Hollow”), Janet Montgomery (“New Amsterdam”) and Jordan Stephens (“Feel Good”)….David Costabile (“Billions”), J. Smith Cameron (“Succession”) and John Hoogenakker (“Dopesick”) have joined the cast of Paramount+’s “American Tragedies: Waco – The Trials” (wt).


“Irma Vep” premieres on HBO Monday, June 6 at 9p. The limited series focuses on Mira (Alicia Vikander), an American movie star disillusioned by her career and a recent breakup, who comes to France to star as “Irma Vep” in a remake of the French silent film classic, “Les Vampires.”

Three-part documentary “The U.S. and the Holocaust” makes its debut Sunday, September 18 on PBS (check local listings). The series, directed and produced by Ken Burns, Lynn Novisk and Sarah Bolstein, examines the rise of Hitler and Nazism in Germany in the context of global antisemitism and racism, the eugenics movement in the United States and race laws in the American south.


The tragic results of Elon Musk’s pursuit of self-driving technology are explored in a new installment of FX documentary film series The New York Times Presents. “Elon Musk’s Crash Course” premieres Friday, May 20 at 7p simultaneously on FX and Hulu.

Google and Crunchyroll have struck a multi-year strategic partnership to accelerate and support Crunchyroll’s global scale ambitions with improved viewer experience and content innovation; expanded distribution; and ad-supported content. Google’s existing partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment includes collaboration across Android, Google TV and Android TV OS, YouTube, Google advertising solutions, and Google Cloud. Crunchyroll Is an independently operated joint venture between US-based Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Japan’s Aniplex.

Media technology startup NetOn.Live announced the launch of LiveOS, an end-to-end software-based platform for high-end live and near-live media production. LiveOS enables local, remote, and decentralized production, translating the functionalities that are traditionally found in dedicated hardware devices into software modules that run on generic IT servers over a SMPTE 2110 based, uncompressed Video over IP network.

Production has begun on “Fallen,” a crime drama from Swedish label Filmlance, distributed globally by Banijay Rights. The series was created and written by Camilla Ahlgren (“The Bridge”), along with Martin Asphaug and Alex Haridi.

APC Studios has secured the first pre-sales for its new series “Wolf,” a co-production with Hartswood Films for the BBC with the support of Creative Wales. HBO Max EMEA has pre-acquired rights to the series for a selection of EMEA territories including Iberia, the Nordics, Central and Eastern Europe among others, while Australian public broadcaster SBS has picked up first-run rights for Australia.
