Star Trek is landing at Nickelodeon. The kids’ net ordered an animated version to be developed by Kevin and Dan Hageman (Ninjago), from CBS’s Eye Animation Productions, Roddenberry Entertainment and Secret Hideout. “Star Trek’s mission is to inspire generations of dreamers to build a brighter future,” said Alex Kurtzman, an exec producer. “Dan and Kevin have crafted a story that honors its exploratory spirit in a way that’s never been done before, while the Nickelodeon team blew us away with their excitement at bringing Trek to a younger generation around the world.”
Nickelodeon also renewed Ryan’s Mystery Playdate for a second season. The show’s April 19 premiere was number one at 12:30p on all of TV among kids 2-11, averaging 2.1/518,000 and 999,000 total viewers.
Topgolf, a sports entertainment experience, and digital entertainment media company Whistle are teaming to produce, market and distribute an original reality series, “The Tour,” for golf’s next-generation event. The show will follow teams along the mixed-level competition that gives everyday golfers a chance to win a trip to Topgolf Las Vegas for a shot at the Championship Title and $50,000 cash.
Blue Ant Media’s Antenna Pictures and Viceland announced the greenlight of drama-documentary How to Rob a Bank, telling the stories of ordinary Americans who spiral into becoming bank robbers. Series will air on Viceland’s linear and streaming video platforms later this year.

Vice Studios is teaming with Chinese streaming service Tencent Video for an eight-part series focused the young generation of Chinese people giving voice to new culture creators. “Young people in China are at a real inflection point,” said Hosi Simon, Vice CEO Asia-Pacific. “Taking inspirations from every corner of the world, they’re putting them through their own, very distinct lens to create something very unique and new – freely and at an unprecedented scale.”
Warrior landed a season two renewal on Cinemax. The martial arts drama based on the writings of Bruce Lee premiered April 5.
A&E docu-series The Employables, charting the highs and lows of job seekers with conditions like autism or Tourette Syndrome, launches Wednesday, May 15 at 10p. Participants work with specialists to help identify their strengths and find the right line of work.
Pennyworth, following Bruce Wayne’s future butler, premieres on Epix on July 28 at 9p. Based on the DC characters, series follows Alfred Pennyworth, a former British SAS soldier who works for young billionaire Thomas Wayne in 1960s London.
Crime drama L.A.’s Finest, starring and executive produced by Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba, will premiere on Spectrum’s On Demand platform on Monday, May 13. The first three episodes will drop on the Spectrum platform that day, with two episodes launching each week thereafter.
Mr. Iglesias, starring stand-up comedian Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias, drops on Netflix Friday, June 21. Iglesias plays a high school teacher who works at his alma mater.

Viewers are experimenting with streaming services, but don’t count out old school antennas. According to Horowitz’s “State of Pay TV, OTT &SVOD 2019” study, 34% of TV content viewers are accessing over-the-air TV content via an antenna. And it’s not just grandma – antenna owners are younger (40% of antenna owners are 18-34 vs. 31% of total TV content viewers) and skew male (59% vs. 49% of total TV content viewers). Among traditional MVPD non-subscribers, 51% report owning an antenna. The study also found antenna owners are more likely to subscribe to one of the three major SVOD services (78% subscribe to Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video, vs. 67% of TV content viewers).  
People with liberal leanings like many more TV shows than their more conservative counterparts, according to USC’s Normal Lear Center and the futurePerfect Lab “Are You What You Watch?” report. They are also open to viewing foreign entertainment and programming that doesn’t reflect their values. The swing group in the middle are more voracious viewers than either liberals or conservatives, and more likely to take action based on what they learn about politics and social issues from TV. What can everyone watch together? Shows favored among all three groups include America’s Funniest Home Videos, Bones, Criminal Minds and MythBusters.
Christian Cooke (Point Blank) and James Bloor (Dunkirk) are set as leading series regulars in National Geographic’s scripted series Barkskins, slated to go into production this year…The cast for Showtime pilot Hombre includes Marisé Alvarez (The Vessel), Greg Grunberg (A Star Is Born), Pepi Sonuga (Famous In Love), and Adriana Santos (Taken). The emotional thriller is set to begin production at the end of April in LA. 
Brands spent an average of $13.71 to drive each incremental store visit in 2018, about ten dollars less than the average spent in 2017 ($23.05), according to the third annual Footfall Attribution Benchmarks report by Cuebiq. The auto category had the highest cost per incremental visit  in 2018 at $291.02, followed by Home Furniture, $114.86, and Grocery Stores, $76.75. Alcohol/Beverages ranked No. 1 among all categories in visit rate in 2018 with 14.58%, followed by Beauty (13.56%), and Convenience Stores (7.24%).
Database platform MongoDB struck a deal to by Realm, the company behind the Realm mobile database and Synchronization Platform, for $39 million, an acquisition aimed at deepening MongoDB’s relationship with developer communities focused on mobile and serverless development. “Realm and MongoDB are a natural fit because we share a vision that when developers can interact naturally with data, they are happier and more productive, and because our products are complementary,” said MongoDB CTO and co-founder Eliot Horowitz in a blog post. “We’re excited to get to work crafting our shared roadmap.”  Details will be announced at the company’s annual global conference, MongoDB World, held June 17-19 in NYC.
The IAB Technology Laboratory released SIMID (Secure Interactive Media Interface Definition) for public comment, a specification designed to replace VPAID (Video Player Ad Interface Definition) and increase transparency. “With SIMID, Tech Lab is responding to the needs of the evolving video advertising marketplace, creating an interactivity solution that should become a critical part of the video supply chain and will promote transparency and security,” said Dennis Buchheim, SVP and General Manager, IAB Tech Lab. “Everyone who has relied on VPAID for interactivity should please review SIMID and provide us with feedback, so it can become a critical part of the video supply chain and drive greater transparency across the ecosystem.”
To optimize its algorithmic data services offerings, Cox Media Group’s Videa will include textual metadata from Red Bee Media in their next-generation system. Red Bee Media will be providing textual scheduling data up to 14 days in advance and 30 days prior, as well as archived data from its database, to provide network programming changes and algorithmic ratings estimates for automated linear TV sales over Videa’s platform. “We are looking forward to continue innovating – leveraging this data to make broadcast TV easier to buy and sell,” said Brett Adamczyk, VP, Business Development and Strategy, Videa. “Red Bee Media has an extensive supply  of analytical data, with years of archived data coverage, which will help us to provide a comprehensive source of truth for programming and ratings estimates.”
Home rental startup Airbnb has its eye on developing a slate of original shows focused on travel, reports Reuters. Faced with stiff competition in the travel industry, the company’s CEO, Brian Chesky, “wants to create a studio,” a source told Reuters.
AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said he was impressed by Disney’s well-received unveiling of its upcoming Disney+ streaming service. “I think what it did was give the market an appreciation that this is a viable direct to consumer product  that will have good appeal for a broad number of customers, not just in the U.S.. but around the world,” said Stephenson during the company’s first quarter earnings call. “We’re very optimistic and the Disney announcement gave us nothing but more optimism in terms of what we think we’ll be able to bring to market.” Stephenson said the company expects to offer details of its upcoming service at a WarnerMedia day in September or October.

Facebook reported healthy first quarter results, with revenue rising 26% to $15.077 billion, and 50 million more monthly users. The company also said the Federal Trade Commission investigation into its data use practices will cost it up to $5 billion in legal fees. “The matter remains unresolved, and there can be no assurance as to the timing or the terms of any final outcome,” Facebook said.
Sony Pictures TV syndicated talker The Mel Robbins Show has been cleared in 90% of U.S. households with its pickup by Nexstar Media Group. Along with strategic partner Tribune, others onboard include CBS, Cox, Hubbard Broadcasting, Scripps and Weigel Broadcasting. The one-hour show, hosted by the author of The 5 Second Rule, debuts September 16.
Black-targeted diginet Soul of the South signed a distribution deal with low-power TV group HC2 that includes coverage in six of the top ten African-American markets, placing it in 29 markets covering 34.2% of total TV homes. SOS also reached 1.2 million cable homes via Comcast and Frontier.
ITV Studios’ and Motion Content Group’s format Love Island will launch in Hungary on RTL Klub this year, while MTV3 has confirmed it will return for a second series in Finland. Love Island Hungary, which will be produced by Paprika, takes the total number of original commissions of the format to 13.

A&E docu-series Live Rescue debuted to 1.4 million Total Viewers, making it cable’s #1 nonfiction launch of 2019 among A25-54 d (665,000), according to Nielsen. The premiere was also A&E’s best series premiere in over two years, since Leah Remini: Scientology & the Aftermath in November 2016.
IFC reports it’s on a ratings roll. For 2019 to date, the net’s primetime ratings grew +26% among A25-54 and up +13% among A18-49 in Live+3 ratings, compared to 2018. In 1Q19 ratings for A25-54 rose +29% and +18-49 were up +17% compared to 1Q18. 
The finale of BET’s Being Mary Jane and new series premiere of Games People Play on Tuesday grossed 2.1 Million viewers 2+ during premiere night across premieres and encores. Mary Jane grossed 768,000 total viewers P2+ and Games garnered 760,000 total viewers P2+ on BET alone.
