IN THE NEWS

National Geographic topped Beta Research’s Brand Identity Study chart, identifying the basic cable networks described as a favorite channel among viewers 18+. Nat Geo was named by 56% of those surveyed, followed closely by ID (54%), Discovery Channel (53%), Disney Channel (53%), History (52%), Comedy Central (52%), Food Network (50%), HGTV (50%) and Animal Planet (50%). The basic networks described as very valuable included Weather Channel (63%), History (59%), National Geographic (59%), Animal Planet (58%), Discovery Channel and Disney Channel (both 56%). Top ranked digital basic networks were Nat Geo Wild (56%) followed by American Heroes, Cooking Channel, Discovery Family, Discovery Life and INSP, each at 52%.

Networks with programs that viewers said they like or would most like to watch on a streaming service were Disney Channel (54%), Bravo (49%), Freeform (49%), Animal Planet (48%), OWN (48%), Paramount Network (48%), Comedy Central (47%), WE tv (47%), A&E (46%), National Geographic (46%) and Cartoon Network (46%). American Heroes (47%), Discovery Family (47%), MotorTrend (47%) and Science (46%) were the top ranked digital basic networks on this new measure.

The first quarter of 2022 has been the best Q1 on record for ad spend, according to Standard Media Index data going back to 2017, rising +13% above 1Q21. Digital has expanded from a 48% share of dollars in January to representing a 59% share of dollars in March. Linear TV spend was flat in Q1, as gains in broadcast TV (+9%) were unable to curtail reductions across cable TV (-8%) and other linear channels.

Sinclair Sports Group and Wave Sports + Entertainment have struck a strategic partnership where SSG will be the exclusive sales representation in the marketplace for WSE’s media assets. The deal gives brands and advertising agencies access to both companies’ assets under a singular offering. “

In the wake of Netflix’s shocking report of a net loss of 200,000 subscribers in 1Q22 – versus expectations of a gain of 2.5 million – Kantar pointed to research showing the main cause of the decline: increased competition in the SVOD space, and more content choices, at a lower price, on AVODs. While the number of streaming services increased, the average number of paid subscriptions per household remained at 3.7 in both 4Q21 and 1Q22. “Saving money is still the number one reason for cancellation, but it has not significantly driven a greater proportion of cancellations this quarter,” said Kantar. “Instead, it’s content that’s more likely to drive cancellation: either wanting to watch a specific series/film and then cancelling or it being hard to find content people want to watch.”

No kidding! A new panel, focused on children’s programming, has been added to Cynopsis’ Big TV Conference, taking place in person September 29-30 in NYC. In addition to OTT, consumer engagement, shoppable TV and more, we’ll be looking at how streaming services and digital content companies can capitalize on red-hot kids’ shows. Details are here.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Showtime ordered “Fellow Travelers,” a limited series based on the novel by Thomas Mallon about the romance of two men in McCarthy-era Washington. Matt Bomer (“White Collar”) stars and exec produces; Ron Nyswaner (“Philadelphia”) is creator and executive producer. Fremantle is co-producing with Showtime.

INSP greenlit season two of “Into the Wild Frontier.” Which was a no-brainer, said Doug Butts, the net’s EVP of Programming. “The premiere episode of ‘Into the Wild Frontier’ was a record-breaking debut for INSP, and subsequent episodes have held that momentum,” said Butts of the historical docudrama. “Strong ratings reinforced the fact that our audience responds to series that feature history, action and adventure.”

Apple TV+ has ordered “Sago Mini Friends,” an animated preschool series based on the children’s app “Sago Mini World.” Spin Master Entertainment is producing; animation will be executed by Brown Bag Films.

Reggie Rock Bythewood (“Swagger”) and Gina Prince-Bythewood (“The Old Guard”) will serve as executive producers under their production company Undisputed Cinema on the Disney+ Original limited series “Genius: MLK/X,” produced by Imagine Television Studios and 20th Television. Brian Grazer and Ron Howard return as executive producers. The new season will focus on two icons: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X. “Genius” will move from National Geographic to Disney+ for the fourth installment and subsequent seasons.

Actress Taylor Cole, who has appeared in Hallmark Channel movies including “One Winter Proposal” and “South Beach Love,” has signed an exclusive overall deal with Hallmark parent Crown Media Family Networks. “We are thrilled to have Taylor on board to star in multiple movies for Hallmark,” said Lisa Hamilton Daly, EVP, Programming, Crown Media Family Networks. “She brings so much joy and positivity to the Hallmark family and we look forward to continuing our work with her to create heartfelt stories that will touch our viewers.” It’s no wonder Crown Media is locking in fan favorite network talent – GAC Media, headed by former Crown Media President Bill Abbott, has scooped up Hallmark mainstays like Candace Cameron Bure, Jen Lilley and Danica McKellar.

Jessica Alba (“L.A.’s Finest”) and Lizzy Mathis (“Unstoppable”) will host and EP “Honest Renovations” for The Roku Channel. The home improvement series from High Noon Entertainment, Mexican Spitfire and 3 Arts Entertainment is slated to premiere later this year.

“Toxicomania,” a film adaptation of the podcast of the same name, scored a greenlight from Paramount+. The story is a fictionalized version of events following the legalization of drugs in Mexico.

HBO Max is developing “My Father’s Son,” starring Chris Powell (“Love Life”). The comedy series, inspired by Powell’s relationship with his father, is being co-written by Powel and Isaiah Lester (“black-ish”). Richie Keen (“It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia”) is attached to direct. Powell, Lester and Keen executive produce alongside Trevor Engelson for Underground and Doug Banker for Five All in The Fifth.

Matilda Lawler (“Station Eleven”) has joined Disney+ series “The Santa Clause” (wt), opposite Tim Allen, Elizabeth Mitchell and Kal Penn.

Blue Ant Studios inked a new first-look deal with producer and director Lisa Corte?s. Corte?s will work with Blue Ant Studios to develop and produce new scripted and unscripted properties spanning documentary, music, history and biography, and narrative. Corte?s and Blue Ant are developing a docuseries based on Clover Hope’s book The Motherlode: The 100+ Women Who Made Hip-Hop. Other projects in progress under the new deal include scripted series “No Retreat,” a drama about Black and Indigenous women soldiers in Europe during World War II, and “Little Apple,” a sci-fi/dramedy created by Riley S. Wilson about a little girl in Harlem who happens to be a superhero.

TECH TALK

Good news for gamers: Comcast has announced it is deploying advanced hollowcore fiber to serve as the foundation for its 10G network. Hollowcore fiber is able to achieve much faster speeds and lower latency than traditional fiber optics; the faster speed can be used to double the reach for latency critical applications and speed up the transaction rates by around 47%, according to Comcast. “Hollowcore fiber is a leap forward in how we deliver ultra-fast, ultra-low latency and ultra-reliable services to customers,” said Elad Nafshi, EVP and Chief Network Officer at Comcast Cable. “As we continue to develop and deploy technology to deliver 10G, multigigabit performance to tens of millions of homes, hollowcore fiber will help to ensure that the network powering those experiences is among the most advanced and highest performing in the world.”

HBO Max has joined Verizon’s +play platform, enabling customers to discover, purchase and centralize some of their subscriptions in one place at no additional cost. +play builds on the content Verizon already offers through providers including Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+, Discovery and AMC+, all of which are featured in the new service, and introduces new partners, including Netflix, Peloton,WW, The Athletic, Calm, Duolingo, and TelevisaUnivision’s Vix+, among others.

VIZIO has expanded its slate of on demand entertainment available on WatchFree+ to include TV shows and movies from more than 17 studios, including Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution (“Need for Speed”); Sony Pictures (“Death at a Funeral,” “Guess Who”); and Warner Bros.
