The 50th Annual Daytime Emmy Awards have been set for Friday, June 16 at 9p, and will air live on CBS via a new two-year deal. The event is produced by NATAS and Associated Television International.

NBC is moving “Lopez vs Lopez” from Fridays to Tuesdays at 8:30p starting April 25, giving the not-yet-renewed freshman comedy a “Night Court” lead-in for its final three episodes of the season.

Four Democrats in Congress are asking the DOJ to review the Warner Bros. Discovery merger. In in a letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland and DOJ antitrust chief Jonathan Kanter, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Rep. Joaquin Castro, Rep. David Cicilline and Rep. Pramila Jayapal wrote that the merger gave the company “the incentive and ability to eliminate broad swaths of its workforce, leaving workers with fewer choices for employment and advancement,” citing layoffs, the cancellation of projects and the removal of content from HBO Max. While the cancellation of “Batgirl,” mentioned in the letter, shocked Hollywood, WBD has not been the only media company in the news for enacting cost-cutting measures.

Allen Media Group is launching its ninth daily court series, with a “firm go” for “Justice for the People with Judge Milian.” Judge Marilyn Milian starred on “The People’s Court,” which was canceled in February, for 22 seasons. Like “Mathis Court with Judge Mathis” – starring Judge Greg Mathis, another long-running star of a recently canceled court show – the new daily one-hour strip will be available for fall 2023, and Milian will be on call to news departments of local broadcast television partners to offer insights on local news stories.

Former Fox News producer Abby Grossberg, who alleges she was coerced into giving false testimony in Dominion Voting Systems’ lawsuit against FNC, has been subpoenaed in by another voting technology company, Smartmatic Inc., which is also suing Fox for defamation. In a subpoena, Smartmatic directs Grossberg to produce documentation regarding the claims aired on Fox News regarding the 2020 presidential election, citing potential evidence and correspondence related to Trump attorneys Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell, as well as the Trump Campaign and the Trump Organization.

Pippa Stevens has been promoted to on-air reporter for CNBC. Stevens joined the network in 2015 and worked as a producer for “Halftime Report” before moving to CNBC.com’s markets team in late 2019.

Sean Spicer has exited Newsmax, where he fronted “Spice & Co.”, after three years. “It is time for me to move on to a new challenge, a new adventure and a new opportunity to serve the American people,” said Spicer, who was Donald Trump’s first White House press secretary.

RENEWALS & CANCELLATIONS

Fox has canceled “The Resident” after six seasons. The medical drama had a cross-platform viewership of 6.9 million viewers this season, down 12% from the 2021-22 season.

Also axed is Netflix dramedy “Sex/Life” after two seasons. The announcement comes three weeks after series star Sarah Shahi joined the cast of ABC legal drama pilot “Judgement.”

And season 14 of Food Network’s “Valerie’s Home Cooking” will be its last, according host Valerie Bertinelli. In an Instagram video, Bertinelli told fans she had learned the show was canceled months ago. “I didn’t say anything last summer because, honestly, I was hoping they would change their mind — but they have not, so this is it,” she said. “This is the final season. I have loved making this show. It was such a dream come true. Every single part of it brought me so much joy.” Responded Food Network star Ree Drummond, “Love you so much, Valerie!! I will be watching every episode and enjoying every second.”

“Tales of the Jedi” will have a second season on Disney+, series co-creator Dave Filoni shared during a panel at Star Wars Celebration Europe 2023. “’Tales of the Jedi’ was so fun the first time, I decided to do some more,” said Filoni.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Twelve “Naked and Afraid” all-stars compete through a multiphase challenge for the chance to win $100,000 in Discovery’s “Naked and Afraid: Last One Standing,” premiering Sunday, May 7 at 8p.

Part two of the fourth season of “Manifest” drops on Netflix on Friday, June 2. Part one was released on November 4. NBC aired the sci-fi family drama for its first three seasons.

TECH TALK

Twitter Blue subscribers will see 50% of ads on their timeline versus nonpaid users, and a visibility boost in search. “As you scroll, you will see approximately twice as many organic or non-promoted Tweets placed in between promoted Tweets or ads,” said the company of the feature. “There may be times when there are more or fewer non-promoted Tweets between promoted Tweets.” The feature doesn’t apply to ads shown on the profile or in replies, promoted accounts and trends, and promoted events on the Explore page.

NPR has stopped tweeting from its main Twitter account after it was labeled “state-affiliated media” last week. It also changed its Twitter bio to read, “NPR is an independent news organization committed to informing the public about the world around us. You can find us every other place you read the news.”

A spokesperson for the BBC, whose official Twitter account was tagged “government funded media,” said, “We are speaking to Twitter to resolve this issue as soon as possible. The BBC is, and always has been, independent. We are funded by the British public through the license fee.”

STREAMING

Horror comedy “Cocaine Bear” starts streaming exclusively on Peacock starting April 14. The 2023 film was inspired by the 1985 true story of a drug runner’s plane crash, missing cocaine, and the black bear that ate it.

Diamond Sports Group has missed the due date for rights payments to the Cleveland Guardians and Minnesota Twins for covering the 2023 MLB season. MLB, which has assured fans its games will “be on TV in some manner” despite the situation, is seeking an order by April 13 that would force Diamond to either pay the Twins and Guardians, or terminate the contracts so the teams could take over the broadcasts.
