IN THE NEWS
The 64th Grammy Awards aired from Las Vegas on Sunday, delayed two months due to the pandemic, and tried to put to focus on performances after the unfortunate spectacle of the Oscars. “We’re gonna be listening to some music,” said host Trevor Noah. “We’re gonna be dancing, we’re gonna be singing. We’re gonna be keeping people’s names out of our mouths, and we’re gonna be giving out awards.” First to present an award was Questlove, whose Oscar award was upstaged by Will Smith slapping Chris Rock. “I’m going to present this award, and I trust that you people will stay 500 feet away from me,” he joked.
“The Drew Barrymore Show” has been renewed through the 2022-23 season in a reimagined format. CBS Media Ventures will produce and distribute the syndicated daytime talker as two half-hour episodes that can air back-to-back, or split to air separately. “Stations have always had a finite amount of shelf space, so we’re evolving the syndication model to meet the needs of our partners,” said Steve LoCascio, President of CBS Media Ventures. “We could not be happier to continue our relationship with CBS Stations and our other station partners to deliver more of ‘The Drew Barrymore Show’ through this innovative new idea.”
Jen Psaki will reportedly head to MSNBC this spring when she leaves her position as White House Press Secretary. Her new job will include hosting her own show on Peacock and appearing as a contributor. Asked at a press briefing on Friday if it was ethical for her to conduct a briefing if she is in talks for a media job, Psaki responded, “There are a range of stringent ethical and legal requirements that are imposed on everybody in this administration and any administrations past about any conversations you are having with future employers. That is true of any industry you are working in, and I have abided by those and have tried to take steps that go beyond that as well.” Psaki indicated in May of last year that she planned to exit her administration job in 2022.
A special segment on the Grammy Awards spotlighted the situation in Ukraine following Russia’s invasion. “We are heartbroken by the situation in Ukraine, yet still moved by the resilient spirit on display there every day,” said Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. “We hope the segment inspires our worldwide audience to get involved to support these critical humanitarian efforts.”
Will Smith has resigned from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences after smacking Chris Rock onstage during the Oscars telecast. “I have directly responded to the Academy’s disciplinary hearing notice, and I will fully accept any and all consequences for my conduct,” Smith said in a statement. “My actions at the 94th Academy Awards presentation were shocking, painful, and inexcusable. The list of those I have hurt is long and includes Chris, his family, many of my dear friends and loved ones, all those in attendance, and global audiences at home. I betrayed the trust of the Academy.” Responded David Rubin, President of the Academy, “We have received and accepted Mr. Will Smith’s immediate resignation from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.” The Academy will continue to move forward with disciplinary proceedings against Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, in advance of its next scheduled board meeting on April 18.
Late night hosts Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon pulled an epic April Fool’s Day prank on Friday, as Kimmel hosted NBC’s “The Tonight Show” and Fallon headlined “ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!”. Fallon said the hosts had been discussing the prank for four years, though he had to acknowledge that after the Oscars smack, “For surprises on ABC this week, this one’s a distant second.”
The Human Rights Campaign has stripped Fox Corporation of its status as a preferred LGBTQ employer, penalizing the company for Fox News’ attacks on Disney for its opposition to Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” law. “We can no longer allow Fox Corporation to maintain its score if Fox News personalities and contributors continue to deny the existence of transgender people, minimize the violence transgender individuals face, refer to parents of LGBTQ+ youth as perverts, or equate leaders of LGBTQ+ diversity and inclusions efforts with sex offenders,” said Human Rights Campaign senior press secretary Aryn Fields. “Each of these actions happened in the last 72 hours. Enough is enough.”
Fox Corp. had been among companies earning a 100% rating as best places to work for LGBTQ+ quality for, among other things, benefits offered in support of same sex, trans and non-binary employees. After the HRC demotion, Fox News pointed to the recent hiring of transgender Olympian Caitlyn Jenner.

STREAMING
Consumers are “overwhelmed by the sheer volume of content from streaming video providers and increasingly frustrated with the efforts needed to access it,” according to new research from Interpret. US viewers subscribe to an average of 4-5 video services, says the study, “The Future of OTT Aggregation,” and the majority also access multiple ad-supported or ad-funded on-demand services. Over 20% of US consumers agree that they “subscribe to too many video streaming services.” The companies that that solve the aggregation puzzle “have much to gain,” said Brett Sappington, VP at Interpret. “Successful aggregation of content and services will produce an improved, sticky customer experience and will drive subscription and ad revenue opportunities.”
FilmRise announced its second deal with Fuji Creative Corporation, giving FilmRise the AVOD and FAST streaming rights to six classic anime titles for distribution on the FilmRise Streaming Network’s Anime Channel and App. The programs included in the deal are “Flame of Recca,” “Ghosts At School,” “GTO,” “Key: The Metal Idol,” “Thermae Romae,” and “Battery.”
