03/29/18: The Sports Emmy nominations saw ESPN top the charts, followed by CBS and FOX

Good morning. It’s Thursday March 29, 2018 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences unveiled nominees for the 39th Annual Sports Emmy Awards with nods across 40 categories. Leading the pack in overall nominations was ESPN, whose group snared 54, followed by CBS Sports and FOX Sports with 31, NBC Sports with 28 and Turner Sports at 19. Other companies with multiple nominations included NFL Network, MLB Network, HBO Sports, Showtime Sports, Verizon, Netflix, SI.com and Univision. Among specific programs with the most nods was CBS’ Army-Navy Game, ESPN’s E:60 and SC Featured, which all drew eight.
 
“The world of sports television grows larger with each passing year and this year was no exception,” said Chuck Dages, Chairman, NATAS. “The 39th Sports Emmy Awards encompassed a record-setting number of entries across multiple categories and the level of quality continues to show the growth and seemingly, unlimited potential of what is available for the sports viewing audience.”
 
 
ON THE AIR

CBS Sports lined up programming plans for The Masters, with week-long coverage across its broadcast, cable and digital platforms highlighted by its traditional 18-hole coverage beginning with the third-round on April 7 at 3p followed by final-round coverage the next day at 2p. Additionally, broadcast coverage features highlights of early-round play airing on CBS both April 5 & 6 at 11:35p. Jim Nantz will once again cover the Masters for CBS, his 31st year as host, joined by Sir Nick Faldo in the18th hole tower. Ian Baker-Finch calls the action at the 17th hole and joins Nantz for the Highlight Shows; Verne Lundquist, the 16th hole; Peter Kostis, the 15th hole; Bill Macatee, the 14th hole; Dottie Pepper, the 13th hole; Frank Nobilo the 11th and 12th holes and Amanda Balionis contributes with interviews. Meanwhile, Masters Live, featuring live full-day video coverage on CBSSports.com, will expand to also offer four channels of golf action offering more than 110 additional hours of live video, along with in-progress highlights, from Augusta National Golf Club throughout the week of the 2018 Masters.
 
ESPN gears up for the Women’s Final Four Presented by Capital One on Friday at 7p with Louisville/Mississippi State on ESPN2, followed by Notre Dame/UConn at 9:30p with the National Championship Game stated for Sunday at 6p on ESPN. The company will utilize 27 cameras to cover the games, with the ability to have 15 different positions, plus four cameras focused on the in-arena studio set with Adam Amin handling play-by-play and making his Women’s Final Four debut alongside analysts Kara Lawson and Rebecca Lobo, and reporter Holly Rowe;
 
NBCSN presents coverage of two live horse racing events on Saturday, beginning with the $10 million Dubai World Cup at 12:30p and continuing with the $1 million Florida Derby at 6p. Nick Luck hosts the Dubai World Cup telecast live from Meydan Racecourse in Dubai while Jerry Bailey and Randy Moss call the action for the Florida Derby.
 
Tennis Channel serves up live coverage of the Volvo Car Open beginning on Monday with more than 55 live television hours on deck for the event, while Tennis Channel Plus offers than 35 hours of live matches as well. Leading the network’s analysis are Hall of Famers Lindsay Davenport and Tracy Austin along with Chanda Rubin while Mary Carillo, Ted Robinson and Steve Weissman make up the network’s 2018 play-by-play team.
 
ReachMe TV is partnering with Stadium, which will now contribute daily, national sports content to the company’s recently introduced ReachMe Sports Channel, syndicating sports highlights, original programming, daily studio programming, and more to ReachMe TV’s content platform, available on thousands of screens across the top-100 airports in the United States as well as in ReachMe TV’s 1,000,000 hotels rooms nationwide.
 
NBC Sports chronicles the rise and triumph of the NHL expansion Vegas Golden Knights in 30-minute special Knight Fever. Debuts Tuesday, April 3 on NBCSN, following the 7:30p coverage of Bruins-Lightning.
 
IMPACT Wrestling announced a partnership with RISE to host seminars with a focus on developing women’s professional wrestlers, as well as the creation of original content for IMPACT Wrestling’s Twitch channel and Global Wrestling Network. On May 11 in Pittsburgh, PA, IMPACT Wrestling and RISE will present RISE – Lights, Camera, ACTION: The Art of TV! The full-day seminar will focus on areas specific to performance in a television environment and cover a wide variety of topics by some of the most influential minds involved in producing IMPACT Wrestling, including writer/producer Jimmy Jacobs, Creative Director Sonjay Dutt, Hall of Famer and Knockouts producer Gail Kim and Executive Vice President Scott D’Amore.
 
MLB’s Opening Day sees all 30 teams in action today, with SiriusXM serving up live game broadcasts and the MLB Network Radio channel as well as a a suite of 30 play-by-play channels on the SiriusXM app dedicated to streaming the official radio broadcasts of every MLB team. Among the roster of expert hosts on the network this year will be seven-time All-Star and former World Series Champion Matt Holliday, who joins MLB Network Radio as a host this season.

The NFL and Nike inked a long-term extension to their on-field rights partnership that will see Nike continue to provide all 32 NFL Clubs with uniforms and sideline apparel bearing the Nike brand for use during all games. Additionally, Nike will continue to provide footwear and gloves worn on the field during games by NFL players who are under contract with Nike. “Nike has been a long-time and trusted partner of NFL and we’re thrilled to extend our relationship with them,” said Brian Rolapp, Chief Media and Business Officer for the NFL. “The NFL and Nike are a powerful combination and we anticipate working closely with them on several programs, including youth and player initiatives.”
 
Tire maker Hankook Tire and Major League Baseball entered a new multi-year sponsorship that names Hankook Tire the Official Tire of MLB in the United States and Korea. The new partnership aims to showcase Hankook Tire across Baseball’s media assets including MLB Network, digital platforms such as MLB.com & social media, and MLB ballparks. Hankook Tire is also developing MLB-themed creative to run in its multimedia advertising, as well as a retail marketing campaign that would extend its MLB footprint beyond the ballparks and media.
 
The New York Red Bulls announced an official partnership with Covanta, a world leader in sustainable waste and energy solutions for communities and businesses. The agreement designates the company as the Official Energy Partner of the team.  
 
Go Bowling is hooking up with Stewart-Haas Racing to leverage SHR’s presence in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series to promote the sport of bowling. Go Bowling will serve as the primary sponsor of SHR’s No. 10 Ford Fusion and driver Aric Almirola during the Aug. 4-5 Go Bowling at The Glen Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race weekend at Watkins Glen International. On Sept. 21, Go Bowling will be the primary sponsor of SHR’s No. 00 Ford Mustang and driver Cole Custer in the Go Bowling 250 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Richmond Raceway.
 
 
DIGITAL & STREAMING

Formula 1 and The Players’ Tribune are launching a new partnership that will see F1 partner with TPT on at least one original series in 2018. The Players’ Tribune debuted, ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, a multi-episode digital series, The Rookie: Brendon Hartley and will embed with Hartley throughout the F1 season.
 
ESPN Audio is adding The Right Time with Bomani Jones to its podcast lineup on April 3. Running twice a week on Turs/Thurs, the show will provide Jones the freedom to expand on and add to the familiar elements – including his often thought-provoking takes on the hottest issues in sports. – from his former ESPN Radio show and his frequent appearances for many years across ESPN television programs.  The Thursday show will include a special guest as co-host, a personality in sports or media.
 
Twitter partnered with MLB on special hashtag-triggered emojis for all 30 teams ahead of Opening Day. Fans can join the conversation by Tweeting to their favorite MLB teams with a unique hashtag-triggered emoji all season long. Mike Trout boasts the most followers on the platform for the league, with 2.49M, followed by Adrian Gonzalez at 2.06M, Yu Darvish at 2M, Justin Verlander at 1.89M and David Price at 1.81M.
