The day after news broke that Showtime‘s Shameless had switched to the comedy category for the 2014 Emmys came word that HBO’s True Detective is gunning for trophies in the ultra-competitive drama field. With a new cast and premise next season, the show is eligible for the less-crowded mini-series category – but with positive buzz and star Matthew McConaughey red-hot after an Oscars win, why not swing for the fences?
El Rey renewed original series From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series for a second season. "As the television landscape becomes even more crowded, it’s important for El Rey Network to have a recurring and memorable franchise that speaks to our audience and allows us to break away from the noise of all the competition," said El Rey vice chair Scott Sassa. Dusk, which premiered on March 11, airs Tuesdays at 9p.
Fox announced more 2014 premiere dates. On deck: the spring premiere of The Mindy Project Tuesday, April 1 at 9p; the launch of Kitchen Nightmares‘ season six on Friday, April 11 at 9p; new unscripted series Riot on Tuesday, May 13 at 9p; season five launch of Masterchef on Monday, May 19 at 8p; new drama Gang Related Thursday, May 22 at 9p; dating show I Wanna Marry "Harry" Tuesday, May 27 at 8p; season eleven bow of So You Think You Can Dance on Wednesday, May 28 at 8p and the season two opener of Hotel Hell, Monday, July 21 at 9p. MIA: freshman comedy Enlisted.
Speaking of I Wanna Marry "Harry": the secret’s finally out about the Fox reality show, which has twelve American women competing for a Prince Harry lookalike they think is the real deal. Deadline reports the project’s premise was kept hush-hush as the women worked their wiles on "Harry," aka commoner Matthew Hicks, on an estate in Berkshire.
A focus on investing in original content may be the reason programs from Scripps Networks Interactive and Discovery Communications can no longer be found on Amazon Prime Instant Video, according to the Wall Street Journal. A source tells the Journal that Amazon has (so far) been unwilling to come to an agreement on the fees the companies want for their content.
Fox Networks Group CEO Peter Rice has extended his contract, 21st Century Fox co-COO James Murdoch (upped from deputy COO) announced Wednesday, citing "successful channel launches including Fox Sports 1 and FXX, an increased international footprint and enhanced sports offerings across the world."
Discovery Communications is expanding "Say Yes to the Prom," an initiative now in its third year aiming to promote confidence and a positive self-image in teens. A group of high school girls were invited to Discovery headquarters in Silver Spring, MD on Wednesday to meet Monte Durham (TLC‘s Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta), employees and style experts for mentoring and makeovers. This year, with industry partners Comcast, Mediacom, OWN, Harpo Studios, JCPenney and bareMinerals, the program will travel to Chicago and Des Moines, Iowa, too. "This year’s ‘Say Yes to the Prom’ demonstrates the collective impact of Discovery’s passionate employees, industry partners and on-air talent to make a difference," said Adria Alpert Romm, Discovery’s chief human resources and global diversity officer.
Sportsman Channel teamed with patriotic rock band Madison Rising to create an original theme song for the net’s Amazing America with Sarah Palin (sample lyric: "We might be a little crazy and get a little nuts/But you can’t have the glory if you ain’t got the guts"). Show launches Thursday, April 3 at 8p.

It was a festive evening at the E! Upfront press party at the Dream Hotel penthouse in New York city. As guests nibbled on veggie tacos and drank Veuve Cliquot, E! Entertainment president Suzanne Kolb presented the new slate. The show she was most excited About? "The Royals," she told Cynopsis. "It’s scripted, which really expands our universe." Here are other highlights.

"With our slate of beloved franchises, the arrival of our first scripted series and a strong development slate, we’re excited about the year ahead."
