03.25.15

Good morning. It’s Wednesday March 25, 2015, and this is your first early morning briefing.

TODAY’S TOP NEWS

An aspiring pop diva, a fashionista and a bookworm come together at boarding school to form their own K-pop-inspired band in Nickelodeon’s newest live-action series, Make It Pop. The series, created by Thomas W. Lynch and Nick Cannon, premieres Monday, April 6, at 7p, with a sneak peek on Thursday, March 26, at 7p, and Friday, March 27, at 5p. The show will air regularly on Nick weekdays at 7p; each episode will be available on Nick.com and the Nick App the day after its linear TV premiere.

PRODUCTION NOTES

Disney Channel is developing a movie about Mo’ne Davis, the 13-year-old girl who pitched a shutout at the Little League World Series last summer and was the first Little Leaguer to make the cover of Sports Illustrated. “A year ago, I never would have thought that Disney Channel would make a movie about me,” said Davis. “I can’t wait to get started, and I hope it will encourage other viewers to believe that dreams really do come true.”

RESEARCH & TRENDS

PlayScience unveiled a new study that shows parents’ perceptions about their child’s technology and media use is heavily influenced by their child’s gender–along with device type and perceived educational value. The PlayScience Parents and Platform Perceptions study was conducted with a national survey of 501 parents of kids ages 2-9. Here are some highlights:
* Parents are three times more likely to give their son a smartphone or videogame device, and give their daughter a kid’s tablet (73 percent vs. 65 percent for boys).  For girls, child-friendliness is the strongest factor in purchases for parents, while for boys their son’s preference is the primary driver.
* Parents are more likely to use tech to manage their sons during difficult parenting moments. Whether soothing them when they are upset (48 percent vs. 37 percent for girls) or getting them to bed (42 percent vs. 34 percent), parents often pacify boys with media.
* Tablets top the list for both parents and kids at all ages, while smartphones rank at the bottom of the list of technology they prefer to use.
“This study puts parents on notice to be more attentive to their attitudes and behaviors about their children’s media use,” says Dr. J. Alison Bryant, Co-CEO and chief play officer at PlayScience. “Whether conscious or unconscious, parents are more likely to take into consideration their son’s preferences, while seeming to be more protective when it comes to choosing for their daughter.”

AROUND THE INDUSTRY

The Fred Rogers Co., with support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, kicked off the Be My Neighbor Day program with eight PBS stations to reinforce the key values presented in the PBS Kids series Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. Participating stations are: KAET/Phoenix, KBYU/Salt Lake City, KUAC/Fairbanks, KVPT/Fresno, WCNY/Syracuse, WHYY/Philadelphia, WTVI/Charlotte, and WUCF/Orlando.  The stations will host activities such as the creation of kits for hospitalized children, a “Clean up the Community Day,” public art for vacant store fronts, and decorating and filling boxes for children in need of school supplies. Some stations will receive a visit from Daniel Tiger.

Shout! Factory Kids’ animated feature Maya and the Bee Movie will open theatrically in L.A. and N.Y. on May 1. Based on the children’s novel, the light-hearted family movie is directed by Alexs Stadermann (Bambi II) and produced by Studio 100 Media and Buzz Studios in association with Flying Bark Productions.
