Fox is reviving The X-Files as a six-episode event series. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson will reprise their roles as FBI agents Mulder and Scully, and Chris Carter, creator of the 1993-2002 supernatural drama, returns as exec producer. “I think of it as a 13-year commercial break,” said Carter. “The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.” Production starts this summer.
ABC Family is getting an assist from fans for the season six marketing campaign for Pretty Little Liars. Viewers of the hit series, which wrapped season five last night, can go to PrettyLittleCampaign.com to vote on different marketing efforts, including key art, and create promos and gifs for use in the social space. “We want our promos and ads to be where the fans are, so the best way to make that happen is to ask them,” said Nigel Cox-Hagan, SVP, marketing, creative and branding.
Fox filed a trademark lawsuit against Empire Distribution, an indie record label it says demanded $8 million in damages (discounted to $5 million if the freshman smash featured their artists) on the grounds the show’s portrayal of “a label run by a homophobic drug dealer prone to murdering his friends” hurts their brand. Fox lawyers note the label doesn’t turn up in a Google search until page 7, the company didn’t apply for a federal trademark for the name, and “it is illogical that anyone would equate a small, independent record label in San Francisco, California with a completely fictional music and lifestyle conglomerate on television.”
A+E Networks inked a content deal with new premium video service Vessel, offering early access to short-form videos from A&E, FYI, History and Lifetime. Videos are available exclusively to Vessel members for 72 hours and then available and shareable for free on Vessel; creators can publish them anywhere else they have a presence on the web. “Our content has proven successful through multiple platforms including TV Everywhere mobile apps, OTT apps and online, so bringing A+E content to Vessel is a perfect way to satisfy our consumers’ demands while continuing to make our programming more accessible,” said Dan Suratt, EVP, digital media, brand and content licensing.
Arts net Ovation launched a multi-platform artist community linking YouTube creators to the network. “Targeted distribution and promotion to arts-loving viewers is where we excel,” said VP Stephen Dypiangco, who’s overseeing the venture. “We will actively spotlight our channel partners on Ovation shows, invite them to host programs, and source their talents for new original programming.”
A pre-taped sketch Monday night explaining how James Corden landed the job of CBS’s Late Late Show host (think Willy Wonka) included A-listers from Jay Leno to Meryl Streep. The show delivered 1.66 million total viewers, up 13 percent versus September-December averages, and up 33 percent among A18-49 (.4). Does Corden have what it takes to keep the momentum going? Let us know in the new Cynopsis poll.

TV One is beginning production on For My Man, a one-hour true crime series about horrendous things women have done in the name of love. But the net’s not just going for shock value. “Crime and justice storytelling is of particular interest to the Black community as they are disproportionally impacted,” said D’Angela Proctor, SVP original programming and production. “We are living in a time where women are among the fastest growing population in prison and we feel it’s important to make their stories known as both a cautionary tale and as a look into the mind of women who are essentially destroyed by love and obsession.” Sirens Media production joins the net’s Monday prime slate in late summer.
ABC Family continues its expansion into comedy with a pickup of Kevin From Work, about a young man in love with his co-worker. “Single camera represents the evolution of our comedy brand,” said Karey Burke, EVP, programming & development. Neither one of those things are true,” she tells Cynopsis. “Working with Outdoor Channel on this documentary, complete with top notch research and interviews with experts, has made one thing very clear: Gun free zones are dangerous, not Safe Havens.” Doc airs on Outdoor Wednesday, April 1 at 4:30p.
Tribune multicast broadcast net Antenna TV celebrates April Fool’s Day with a 27-hour marathon, Fumbling Fools: Three Stooges. Yuks start at 12a.
