Disney tapped ABC News president Ben Sherwood to succeed Anne Sweeney as co-chairman, Disney Media Networks and president, Disney/ABC Television Group. Sherwood assumes the co-chair title on February 1, 2015, upon the exit of Sweeney, who announced her decision to pursue TV directing. Effective immediately, Sherwood will transition as co-president. "Ben is one of those unique executives who combine rich creative experience with great business acumen," said Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of Disney. "He’s also focused, strategic and competitive, as evidenced by the success of GMA, the Yahoo deal that delivered ABC News online dominance, and the vision behind our new cable and digital venture, Fusion."

IN THE NEWS

The Fox Business Network global markets editor and anchor of Opening Bell with Maria Bartiromo will add Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo to her FBN plate starting March 30 at 10a. Bartiromo jumped to the net from CNBC in January.

A new study suggests those little tweets can pack a big punch. FOX, Twitter and the Advertising Research Foundation announced research showing that over 90 percent of people who see TV-show related tweets have at some point taken immediate action to watch, search for or share content, and are "highly likely" to watch a show they’ve never seen before, or resume watching a show they’d dropped, as a result of a tweet. (And sorry, Mom, but the TV-related tweets most likely to motivate a viewer come from cast members, not friends or family.) On the ad side, 54 percent of people who recall seeing tweets about brands have tweeted, searched for the brand online, or considered trying the brand, says the study.

That said – a new study from the Council for Research Excellence indicates that TV promos are more effective than social media at persuading people to view new shows. While almost 40 percent of respondents said a commercial led to their decision to try a new show, just 7 percent said social media was the driver. But social media is still an important component of TV viewing, said the study, with once out of every six viewers engaged while tuned in.

Fusion puts the focus on the crisis in Venezuela in primetime news special #SOSVenezeula. At a panel discussion last week at the Multicultural Media Forum, Fusion VP and Chief Strategy Officer Joel Kliksberg said coverage of events in the country has been followed intently by viewers. "People are posting all over Facebook because they were focused on this youth movement… and the horrendous situation that has developed over recent weeks," said Kliksberg. "They knew friends who were Venezuelan, they have friends who are Hispanic, and they were taking our content and not just sharing it with us, not just interacting with us, but they were interacting with each other." Special airs Wednesday, March 26 at 10p.

The fourth season of FX‘s American Horror Story has a name: Co-creator Ryan Murphy revealed on Twitter that the subtitle of the horror anthology series will be "Freak Show."

A partial list of winners of this year’s Peabody Awards will be revealed on CBS This Morning Wednesday, April 2, with the entire group then made available on www.peabodyawards.com. Ira Glass (public radio’s This American Life) will join the morning show anchors for the announcement, as well as emcee the awards presentation in NYC on May 19. Pivot is airing prime time specials about the prestigious media awards beginning this spring.

Screenvision announced a redesign of its pre-feature entertainment programming. Rebranded "Front & Center," the 20-minute preshow’s format more closely aligns to TV packages, to "better showcase entertainment programming and brand advertising." Said John McCauley, SVP of Strategic Alliances, "It really is all about creating a platform for the brands we work with to shine." Included in last month’s entertainment blocks were NBC‘s Crisis and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and FX‘s Americans.

The Tuesday, April 8 Cynopsis webinar, Creating the Perfect Media Pitch: The New Secrets to Selling to Advertisers brings agency, brand and network experts together to explain the new partnering opportunities advertisers expect, must-haves for today’s sales calls and best practices for determining a brand’s goal. Please go here for more details.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Citing "tremendous viewer response," Reelzchannel ordered ten new eps of reality series Hollywood Hillbillies, about a family that relocates to Tinseltown from Georgia to pursue fame. "Mema, Michael and their family have warmed hearts across America," said Stan E. Hubbard, CEO of Reelz. Season two of the Asylum Entertaintment series is set to premiere in August 2014.

Corona Pictures and FremantleMedia International confirmed that J.J. Connolly (Layer Cake) will adapt the first three of author Wilbur Smith‘s Courtney series, Birds of Prey, for television.

COMING UP

After lighting up Twitter with the (spoiler alert!) shocking death of Will Gardner (Josh Charles) on Sunday night, CBS‘s The Good Wife follows up with the aftermath on Sunday, March 30 at 9p. "Bring tissues," advised Julianna Margulies during a Facebook chat. Show creators Robert and Michelle King explained in a letter to fans that faced with Charles’ decision to leave the show, they decided to kill off the character because, "The Good Wife is a show about human behavior and emotion, and death, as sad and unfair as it can be, is part of the human experience that we want to share."

Nat Geo proves it can take a joke by inviting the snarkers behind Mystery Science Theater 3000 and RiffTrax to offer "unconventional commentary" on three hours of the net’s shows. Total Riff Off has Mike Nelson, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett giving their takes on an elusive flesh-eating bat and a puppy with a taste for thongs on Tuesday, April 1 from 8p-11p. "We are excited to lighten things up on April Fool’s Day," Brad Dancer, SVP, programming planning and research for National Geographic Channels, tells Cynopsis, "and have some fun with our viewers… and ourselves!"

TLC looks at the gritty world of female detectives in Women of Homicide. Eight eps from Screaming Flea Productions launch Wednesday, April 9 at 9p.

ABC announced start dates for four new summer series: The Astronaut Wives Club on Thursday, July 24 at 9p; Bachelor in Paradise on Monday, August 4 at 8p; Rising Star on Sunday, June 22 at 9p and The Quest on Thursday, June 19 at 8p.

ABC also confirmed return dates for The Bachelorette (Monday, May 19 at 9:30p, and moving to 8p on May 26); Bet On Your Baby (Saturday, May 31 at 8p); Extreme Weight Loss (Tuesday, May 27 at 8p); Mistresses (Monday, June 2 at 10:01p); Motive (Wednesday, May 21 at 10p); NY Med (Tuesday, June 24 at 10p); Rookie Blue (Thursday, July 17 at 10) and Wipeout (debuting with a two-hour premiere on Sunday, June 22 at 7p before moving to 8p on June 29).

Esquire tacked a 90-minute special onto controversial youth football reality series Friday Night Tykes, which has its finale tonight, March 25 at 9p. Tackling Tykes, from 441 Productions, Texas Crew Productions and Electro-Fish Films, airs Tuesday, April 1 at 9p.

The TV premiere of two-hour movie Bomb Girls: Facing the Enemy, a story about Allied Intelligence during World War II, airs Memorial Day, Monday, May 26 at 9p on Reelzchannel.

"ACM New Artist of the Year Presented by Kohl’s" nominees Brett Eldredge, Justin Moore and Kip Moore will perform via live remote from the 4th Annual ACM Fan Jam during the 49th Annual Academy of Country Music Awards, Sunday, April 6 at 8p on CBS. The live, fans-only concert event will take place in Las Vegas during and after the broadcast. Fan voting for the Entertainer of the Year award is now open at www.VoteACM.com.

Velocity is bringing Dallas Car Sharks back for a sophomore season of cutthroat car flipping with back-to-back eps starting Wednesday, April 2 at 10p.

Syfy time travel police drama Continuum is back for season three on Friday, April 4 at 10p.

BRANDS & ADVERTISING

Univision launched a trade and digital media campaign on Monday to educate marketers about Hispanic consumers, and show the results of investment in Spanish-language advertising. Among the results: 30 percent of Nissan Sentras were purchased by Hispanics in 2013, and 100 percent of Post cereal’s brand growth comes from the demo. AdAge reports the net worked with two agencies, Digitas and Troika, to develop the "Return on Influence" campaign.

DISTRIBUTION & CARRIAGE

Echo Bridge Entertainment announced several new deals for cooking shows hosted by Lidia Bastianich. Lidia’s Kitchen most recently sold in Croatia, Canada and Poland, and Lidia’s Italy in America and Lidia’s Italy were sold in Mexico and the Middle East.
