Fox’s Empire wrapped up its smash season on Wednesday with a 6.5 rating among A18-49 and 16.7 million viewers. From its January 7 premiere, the hip hop drama rose in viewers every week, for a total gain of 69 percent, and grew 71 percent among A18-49, with only one demo dip. Season one is now streamed exclusively to subscribers of Hulu Plus, which SVP and head of content Craig Erwich described Thursday as being “ecstatic to be the exclusive streaming home to the biggest show of the year.”

IN THE NEWS

Mr. T is the latest celeb to sign on for a DIY home improvement series. In I Pity the Tool (get it, A-Team fans?), he’ll lead a construction team giving home makeovers, with an assist from HGTV Design Star winner Tiffany Brooks. And he’s no amateur. “Before I worked in show business, I worked in the demolition business,” said T.  “Even after I made it in Hollywood, I kept on building things.” Daryl Hall and William Shatner are among the other stars who took renovations to the small screen for DIY.

Bounce TV founder Martin Luther King, III did not take kindly to Time Warner Cable’s decision to drop the net from NYC, and its lack of carriage on TWC in LA, feelings he made clear in a letter to group vice president David Lange that was made public on Thursday. “I am very disappointed that Time Warner Cable is denying their African-American subscribers in the two largest cities in the country the ability to see Bounce TV, one of the fastest-growing networks in all of television,” King tells Cynopsis. “It is my hope that my letter helps Univision, our distribution partner in New York and Los Angeles, in their Bounce TV carriage discussions with Time Warner Cable.”

Comedy Central returns as a development partner for the New York Television Festival. What will catch Comedy’s eye: scripted comedy formats including sketch, narrative/single-camera sitcom, animated and late night.

ID’s first podcast launched yesterday, a companion to crime series The Mind of a Murderer. “Eliminating the visual component from the original series presents a gripping and spine-tingling experience: listeners will be hooked on every last word of the killer’s dark confession,” promises Henry Schleiff, group president, Discovery Communications. Podcast is available for download on iTunes.

Patrick Duffy (Dallas) will lead the Golden Nymph TV series jury at the Monte Carlo Television Festival June 13-18. Competition is open to all international networks, distributors and production companies.

The TV Academy ruled that hour-long Shameless, Jane the Virgin and Glee can compete in the Emmy comedy category. Good call? Let us know if you agree in the new Cynopsis poll.

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

ID is teaming with film director Joel Schumacher (Batman Forever) for true-crime series Do Not Disturb: Hotel Horrors, featuring cases of hotel murders. Schumacher, who has a handle on ID’s audience, will exec produce. “I love true crime and I’m fascinated with the criminal mind (because I have one), which is why I love ID,” said Schumacher. “I thought, wouldn’t it be fun to work on a show for them…expect all the violence, sex and all the scandal and twists ID fans want to see.”

Another ID update: As the Robert Durst arrest continues to grab headlines, the net has greenlit Front Page, an “instamentary” series about cases in the news. The turn-around documentaries outline “the facts and suspicions as they unfold, almost in real time,” said Henry Schleiff, citing the net’s CrimeFeed.com website and viewer feedback as evidence that ID is a trusted source of information about complicated cases. “Instamentaries ripped from the front pages of newspapers across the country is a natural evolution of our storytelling,” said Schleiff.

One month after Phil Craig assumed the job of EVP and chief creative officer at Discovery Networks International, the company announced the green light for five new shows. Slate includes documentary Terror in the Skies: AirAsia and Beyond from ITN, set for April, and series Engine Addict with Jimmy De Ville (fall 2015) from Maverick TV, Lost and Starving (wt, winter 2016) from betty, The Brainy Bunch (wt, 2016) from Lime Pictures and Life of Dogs (wt,2016) courtesy of Plimsoll Productions.

Director Keith Gordon (The Returned) signed a development deal with A+E Studios. Agreement includes a blind script commitment calling for Gordon to write, direct and produce the possible pilot.

FX struck a first-look deal with producer Stacey Sher (Pulp Fiction) and Shiny Penny, covering projects developed at FX Networks. Sher is producing AMC’s Badlands and is exec producer on Comedy Central’s Reno 911.

Miramax chose Ehren Kruger (The Ring) to write its The Brothers Grimm project, set in 19th century Europe. Series furthers the story of the Terry Gilliam movie by the same name; Kruger was screenwriter.

Deals with Fox, UK’s ITV and Canada’s Shaw Media sent Sony Pictures Television supernatural crime drama Houdini and Doyle straight to series, reports Deadline. Writers David Titcher (The Librarians) and David Hoselton (House) and exec producer David Shore (House) are onboard the show about the real-life friendship between Arthur Conan Doyle and Harry Houdini.

BRANDS & ADVERTISING

Don’t write off Baby Boomers yet. A study from U.S. News & World Report said the demo – pocketing 70 percent of U.S. disposable income – is still a financial force to be reckoned with. Boomers account for 55 percent of packaged goods sales, with the same percentage remaining loyal to brands. 83 percent go online to research products before purchase, and 70 percent plan to take a vacation in the next 12 months.
