CynKids Exclusive: Cupcake Digital is acquiring zuuka, developer of the iStoryTime app library. The purchase positions Cupcake as one of the largest independent children’s app developers, with a combined library of over 250 titles and a download base of over 8.5 million. The first app due out under the merged company will be Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness. Founded in 2012, Cupcake has risen quickly in the kids apps market with a licensed IP library rooted in both the TV and film worlds. Popular titles feature Strawberry Shortcake, Wow! Wow! Wubbzy! Fraggle Rock, Madagascar and How To Train Your Dragon. In January Cupcake released an app for Sony Pictures’ The Nut Job, and its app for the Fox’s upcoming Rio 2 movie sequel will be out April 1. iStoryTime’s BookShelf library app is filled primarily with licensed film content, including Sony Pictures’ Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, and DreamWorks Animation’s Turbo and Kung Fu Panda. "The synergies that are created by bringing Cupcake and zuuka together are ideal… We were essentially talking to the same people at the studios," Brad Powers, Cupcake digital chairman/CEO, tells CynKids. "This allows us to provide a one-stop solution for licensing movie properties to develop interactive apps and stories." zuuka founders Graham Farrar and Jack "Woody" Sears will hold senior management positions at Cupcake Digital, and the combined power could even entice studios still keeping their app development in-house to consider a third-party licensing arrangement. "What we can provide to the studios is unique. Combined we are able to produce delightful apps and an extremely efficient marketing apparatus to drive downloads and sales," Powers says. "We expect the trend will continue." Cupcake will maintain the iStoryTime library, including upgrading functionality for some titles.

Anne Sweeney, co-chair of Disney Media Networks and president of Disney/ABC Television Group, will depart the Mouse House in January 2015 to pursue a career in television directing. (Just a guess, but we’re thinking she’ll have a lot of offers.) Acknowledging her decision may surprise some, Sweeney said in a statement, "As wonderful as the experience has been, there has always been a nagging voice in the back of my head pushing me to step out of the comfort zone of the executive ranks and more directly into the creative arena that enticed me to TV in the first place. I finally listened to that voice." Disney topper Bob Iger applauded Sweeney’s accomplishments and noted he looks forward to "having her direct one of our shows in the future." Sweeney joined Disney in 1996 as president of Disney Channel and EVP of Disney/ABC Cable Networks.

ADVERTISING & PROMOTIONS

The Birds Eye view now includes lots of Disney content. Pinnacle Foods-owned Birds Eye Vegetables just signed a multi-network, multiplatform sponsorship with Disney that launches this summer with integrations across TV and digital platforms, sponsorship of Disney’s Magic of Healthy Living TRYathlon Road Tour in August-September, and engagement of Disney Channel and Disney XD stars for a cross-platform sweepstakes. The deal is part of Birds Eye’s new branded Step Up To The Plate initiative to help increase the number of kids getting their daily recommended greens, and it aligns with Disney’s Magic of Healthy Living initiative.

MORE KIDS NEWS

The Walt Disney Co. reportedly is in talks to acquire YouTube multichannel phenom Maker Studios, a deal that would mark a significant marriage of Hollywood and YouTube culture. Maker Studios already has raised more than $70 million, from investors as varied as Time Warner Investments; Maker’s executive chairman; and Downey Ventures, the investment company for Robert Downey Jr. It currently counts 350 million subscribers and 5.5 billion monthly views, and its channels include Cartoonium, PewDiePie and WestFestTV. Last year, DreamWorks Animation bought AwesomenessTV in a deal worth up to $117 million.

PROGRAMMING PICKS

PBS Kids and the National Recreation and Park Assn. are springing ahead with their annual Explore the Outdoors partnership, which encourages families to celebrate nature and the outdoors. NRPA members and PBS member stations will host events throughout April with PBS Kids Explore the Outdoors activities and materials. (pbsparents.org/outdoors). The campaign kicks off April 7 with eco-themed programming weeks on Wild Kratts and Arthur, plus the premiere of The Cyberchase Movie and launch of new web-original Plum Landing. Outdoor-themed eps of other PBS Kids programs will also air on Earth Day, April 22.

DIGITAL UPDATE

Kobo will make Sesame Street eBook titles available through its digital reading platform. A new agreement with Sesame Workshop comprises more than 50 Sesame Street titles, including The Monster at the End of This Book, Count to 10, and How To Be A Grouch. The titles are available beginning this week at the Kobo online Kids’ Store.
 
Done deal. Warner Bros. is leading an $18 million investment in YouTube videogame channel Machinima. The funding round also includes participation from previous investors Google, MK Capital and Redpoint Ventures.

GAMES & APPS

Entertainment One Licensing will roll out its first national retail campaign in the States for a Peppa Pig DVD. The My Birthday Party DVD is part of a xx for the brand, including Peppa Pig’s Party Time mobile app, developed by P2 Games.

Visitors to gaming sites including Gizmodo, IGN and Verge and Machinima are getting a little flashback this week, thanks to a retro campaign from EA Games. To help promote new game Titanfall, which debuts this week, the company created a series of interactive banner ads featuring the classic Atari games Asteroids, Centipede and Mission Control, according to Advertising Age. In the ads, players can attack their enemies with extra firepower courtesy of a Titan.

LICENSING

Entertainment One Licensing signed new deals with Bakery Crafts for Peppa Pig cake top decor, cupcake rings and edible Icing Art, and Pioneer Balloon Company for Peppa Pig balloons.
 

INTERNATIONAL

Germany’s ARD/SWR purchased 9 Story Entertainment’s Jack & Jill, and will broadcast the preschool series on KiKA, its public children’s channel, beginning May 12. Joe & Jack was also recently licensed to Ceska Televise in the Czech Republic. 9 Story picked up worldwide distribution rights to the series a year ago as part of its acquisition of CCI’s Kids & Family library.
