Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 6, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.
Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam says the company would like to partner with content producers for an online TV service – and has already begun discussions with some of them. In fact, McAdam said those content companies are open to working with Verizon since "the pie now grows if they go over-the-top." A similar agreement was just made between Dish and Disney, allowing Dish to stream content via an over-the-top TV service, according to The Verge. Verizon will also be plumbing the assets of the Intel failed web TV project it acquired in January.
The much fan crowd-funded Veronica Mars movie has partnered with Fandango to debut the first eight minutes on its Facebook page on March 8. The full movie will premiere at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas on the same day.
Seems that the BBC TV channel (BBC3) is cutting the cord, transforming into an internet-only channel in an effort to cut costs for the publicly funded network. Bringing BBC3 over to BBC’s iPlayer would potentially save the network 100 million pounds a year. The plans to shut down the channel along with the future of the other channel, BBC4, will be officially announced today. BBC3 show fans began protesting the move on Twitter yesterday with the hashtag #SaveBBC3.

The Dalai Lama sat down for an exclusive half-hour interview with Larry King on Larry King Now, the daily Internet show carried by Ora.TV and Hulu. The pair discussed social and political issues, but what reportedly stood out most is the Dalai Lama’s sense of humor. The chat airs Monday, March 10.
My Damn Channel will launch four new series this month on its Comedy Network. Honchos‘ first ep premiered yesterday, and will continue to every Wednesday on MDC’s site and YouTube channel; Self-Help will premiere on March 18 with a new ep every Tuesday. (The two are also official New York Television Festival 2013 selections.) The second season of Bill & Sons Towing will premiere March 27, and will release a new ep every Thursday following. T:3 Showdown is a new interactive talent competition where contestants compete to create a new series for MDC, and is set to debut on March 10 with a new ep every Monday for five weeks.
Dailymotion and Mashable are partnering to launch a new docu-series highlighting tech, entertainment and lifestyle entrepreneurs called That Was Me. The first episode premiered yesterday on both sites, and featured SXSW President and Founder Roland Swenson in time for the festival to kick off in Austin, Texas today. The series will include five more episodes featuring BitTorrent’s Brahm Cohen on April 2, Star Wars and Jurassic Park‘s movie-FX contributor Phil Tippet on May 1, Grumpy Cat rep Ben Lashes on June 4, Bethesda Softworks founder (behind Madden NFL video game) Christopher Weaver on July 2, and Match.com designer Thede Loder on August 6.
With Conan O’Brien on board to host the MTV Movie Awards, the network also announced that YouTube comedy troupe Our2ndLife (1.5 million subs, 142.9 million views) will produce promo videos for the event on April 13. MTV will bring in the YT and Fullscreen group in a Nominee Rundown video that will go live after nominees are revealed today, and Our2ndLife will create sketches that will air during MTV’s morning show AMTV. On the night of the ceremony, the group will also become social correspondents on the red carpet.
E! Online announced its biggest overall day ever during the Academy Awards this past Sunday. Both Eonline.com and its mobile app recorded record-breaking traffic: the site’s 45 million digital page views meant a 40 percent increase over 2013’s show. 2.5 million uniques on Eonline.com translated into a 63 percent rise, and mobile was up 129 percent to 1.8 million uniques.

News reading app Flipboard has acquired magazine app Zite from CNN. The $60 million deal, according to CNNMoney, will allow Flipboard to syndicate CNN’s content on its app. The Verge reports that Flipboard, which brings in 2.5 million page views per month and 250,000 new users a day, was interested in Zite for its personalized content technology, which sets it up as a major competitor to Facebook‘s latest app, Paper.

LinkedIn introduced Sponsored InMail yesterday, which allows advertisers to send targeted emails straight to a user’s mobile device. Sponsored InMail has only been available on desktops, but with 41 percent of the site’s visitors filtering in through mobile devices, the move makes sense.
Digital agency Ready Set Rocket created an app for Google Glass as part of its campaign for the new Kenneth Cole fragrance, Mankind. The app will load a daily "deed" for 21 days, followed by an image. A user can then take a photo of their act and share it on social media networks.
Among the key findings in Nielsen‘s Q4 2013 Cross-Platform: smartphone users spent 89 percent of their mobile media time using mobile apps; women spent nearly an hour-and-a-half more than men using mobile apps over that same quarter; and women spent more than five more hours using mobile apps on their tablets than men, and more than two more hours on the mobile Web in Q4 2013.
Fullscreen has named Ashley Kaplan as the new Head of Content. Kaplan was previously producing and developing content for Fullscreen and its partners like The Fine Brothers and Lindsey Stirling. Before Fullscreen, she was VP of Digital Content and Strategy for production company Magic Elves, which produced Bravo‘s Last Chance Kitchen.

Geico and M&M paired up for a delightful mash-up of an ad, in which the brown M&M, Ms. Brown, asks the Geico gecko to provide her insurance. The commercial, created by M&M’s agency BBDO New York and Geico’s agency The Martin Agency, also features a third cameo from the hump-day camel in Geico spots. The brand-on-brand banter makes for a fun advertisement, which will also feature a social-media campaign on Facebook and Twitter depicting how Ms. Brown continues her efforts to get insured.
