03.04.15 Good morning. It’s Wednesday March 4, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
ESPN will see 23 conference championships decided on its channels this year as part of Men’s Championship Week running through March 15. Overall, ESPN channels will carry a record 135 games over the 13 day period across ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNEWS, SEC Network and ESPN3 including every game from nine conference tournaments: ACC (13), American (10), Atlantic Sun (8), Big 12 (9), Horizon (7), MEAC (11), SEC (13), Southern (9) and Sun Belt (7). The first year of SEC Network’s schedule will include exclusive coverage of the first 10 games of the Southeastern Conference Basketball Tournament while ESPN will televise the semifinals and championship. ESPN3 offers five special “ESPN3 Surround” applications for an alternative viewing experience to the traditional telecast with different camera angles and audio as part of the ACC, American, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC title games.
Meanwhile, NBC Sports Group’s coverage of the 2015 college basketball season wraps up with 13 games and over 40 hours of live coverage on deck via NBCSN and NBC Sports Live Extra, including the CAA and Atlantic 10 Championship Tournaments. Coverage of the CAA Men’s Basketball Championship launches Sunday at 2:30p with Game 1 of the Semifinals with the CAA Championship Final on Monday night at 7p. Mike Corey handles play-by-play duties for all CAA Championship games, and will be joined by Ron Thompson. Russ Thaler will host NBCSN’s CAA Championship studio show and will be joined by analyst and former player Dalen Cuff. The Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Championship will see two quadrupleheaders and more than 16 hours of the Second Round and Quarterfinals starting March 12 at noon.
FOX Sports was the recipient of record viewership thanks to the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 and UEFA Europa League Round of 32 last week. Coverage on FOX Sports 1 saw new highs on both Tuesday and Thursday. Tuesday’s Barcelona/Manchester City game drew 779,000 viewers to the channel, according to Nielsen, to mark the biggest audience for a UEFA Champions League match on cable since 2009. FOX Deportes’ coverage of the match was the top Spanish-language sports program for the day with 425,000 total viewers. Thursday’s doubleheader of the UEFA Europa League drew 159,000 viewers and 109,000 among the Adults 18-49 demographic, making it the most-watched Europa League match in FOX Sports 1 history in both metrics.
CBS Sports recruited former head coach Rick Neuheisel to its team where he will serve as a college football studio analyst on CBS’ pre-game studio show College Football Today. He will also contribute to CBS Sports Network’s college football coverage with duties that include serving as a regular member of the weekly roundtable show Inside College Football. “Rick’s enthusiasm, football acumen and experience on the field and the sidelines make him a natural on television,” said McManus. “His addition strengthens our college football announce team and we look forward to showcasing his sharp insight and analysis across CBS Sports and CBS Sports Network.”
Speaking of college football, Jon Gruden’s QB Camp is back and will begin year six starting Tuesday, April 7 at 7p on ESPN2. Shows will air across multiple ESPN networks and ABC leading up to the 2015 NFL Draft. This year’s crop of QB’s are set to include Florida State’s Jameis Winston and Oregon’s Marcus Mariota, as well as Baylor’s Bryce Petty, UCLA’s Brett Hundley and Colorado State’s Garrett Grayson.
FOX Sports 1 will carry The Algarve Cup, marking the first time that matches for the longest-running women’s international soccer event has been televised widely in the US on ad-supported basic cable television. The network will offer coverage of two U.S. Women’s National Team Group B matches, plus the USA’s placement match on March 11 with the tournament beginning today at 2p. John Strong calls the first two matches alongside Danielle Slaton. JP Dellacamera provides play-by-play commentary for the USWNT placement match with Cat Whitehill and DiCicco offering analysis.
Spike TV roped Dwayne Johnson into its corner via a deal with the Rock’s and Dany Garcia’s $7 Bucks Productions. The agreement includes shows that include “big live events, specials, sports and initiatives surrounding our troops and veterans.” “We’re thrilled to be in business with Spike as they build a brand with universal appeal,” said Johnson. “Over the next year and beyond we’re going to deliver compelling and powerful programming to entertain, inspire and provide just the right amount of shock and awe to its growing audience base. It’s an exciting partnership, $7 Bucks Productions and Spike are coming to win.”
The 2015 WWE Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will be seen this year on USA Network on March 30 at 11p, immediately following Monday Night Raw. Inductees are set to include “Macho Man” Randy Savage, The Bushwhackers, Alundra Blayze and Rikishi, as well as Arnold Schwarzenegger. The ceremony itself takes place on March 28.
FC Dallas inked a deal with local television partner TXA 21 (KTXA) to serve as the official “Home of FC Dallas Soccer,” with the station showcasing 17 of the team’s 34 regular-season games. The remaining matches will either be available on a second local outlet yet to be determined or on national television. Play-by-play man Mark Followill will return to call most of the games, with Bob Sturm joining the broadcast team to handle play-by-play duties for the others.

Dell is tapping into the International Federation of PGA Tours via a multi-year agreement that makes Dell the title sponsor of the World Golf Championships-Match Play beginning in 2016. The renamed event will be dubbed the World Golf Championships-Dell Match Play and held the week of March 21-27. The potential multi-year partnership will offer branding opportunities that include premium signage placement in the bucking chutes and around the PBR’s 450-square foot video screen for both live event and TV coverage; in-arena promotions involving Flint Rasmussen, in-arena video commercials, and local media inclusion.
Rolling Stone will co-sponsor a US team in one of the prototype divisions of the 24 Hours of Le Mans auto-endurance race this race, according to the LA Times. The magazine will join Patron Spirits in sponsoring the two Honda ARX-04b cars fielded by Patron’s Extreme Speed Motorsports team in the race.
ESPN Digital Media is reporting a record year in 2014 in Spanish-speaking Latin America, where its platforms ranked as the top sports property in the region. The territories scored 4.2 million monthly unique users, according to comScore with ESPN.com notching its best year on record in terms of average daily unique visitors (+20% YoY), total minutes (+15% YoY) and total video starts (+16% YoY).
