A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE FROM PIVOT

TRUTH AND POWER

An investigative doc series about digital privacy rights that The Huffington Post calls "unprecedented and pioneering"

Executive Produced by award-winning director Brian Knappenberger
Narrated by Academy Award® nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal

Fridays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Pivot.

IN THE NEWS

Tribune Media, owner of WGN America and 42 local TV stations, is looking into “strategic and financial alternatives” which could include selling assets or forging new partnerships. “We believe that the value of the portfolio of businesses of Tribune Media is not fully reflected in the stock price and intend to explore ways to unlock value by reviewing strategic alternatives,” said Tribune chairman Bruce Karsh. As for whether that could include the sale of WGN America, “it includes each and every option,” Tribune president and CEO Peter Liguori told analysts on Monday. The company reported a fourth quarter net loss of $381 million, versus $317.7 million in profit one year ago.

CBS renewed NCIS for two more seasons, with series star and exec producer Mark Harmon onboard with a new two-year deal. The procedural, now in season 13, is TV’s most-watched drama series, averaging 20.47 million viewers, up 4 percent from one year ago. The show is also licensed in (ka-ching) over 200 markets.

Exclusive: American Heroes Channel has a new tagline: “Heroes Make History,” aimed at drawing viewers in search of high-quality history content. It’s hardly new territory, net GM Kevin Bennett, tells Cynopsis. “AHC has always been about history, even in our days as the Military Channel,” says Bennet. “But it’s history told our way, through the lens of the incredible, brave, infamous characters who have fought for what they believe in and have driven change.”

Bounce TV is offering the HD series premiere of its first drama series, Saints & Sinners, to network affiliates for airing on their primary channel between March 7-13. Drama launches on Bounce Sunday, March 6 at 9p. What’s the deal? “This special play of Saints & Sinners will allow our affiliates to promote their carriage of Bounce and encourage sampling of the series, both of which will enhance their ad sales revenue opportunities locally,” said Bounce TV SVP of affiliate relations Tracy Underwood. African American-focused Bounce airs on the broadcast signals of local television stations and corresponding cable carriage.

Mad Dogs won’t make it to season two on Amazon. The well-reviewed dark comedy, based on a British format, landed on the streaming service January 21. Exec producer Shawn Ryan said via Twitter that while he and original creator Cris Cole were ready to proceed with a story they believed in for a second season, “Amazon didn’t want to make that story, and we didn’t want to make the kind of story they wanted us to make, so it made more sense to declare victory after ten episodes, which was our original plan all along anyway.”

Fusion anchor Mariana Atencio will be telling the stories of young Hispanic voters across the country in Searching for the Latino Voter, a series running across the net’s digital, social and OTT platforms, as well as newsmag AMERICA With Jorge Ramos. “We all know Hispanics are playing an increasingly important role in national elections, but as a young Latina journalist I am tired of seeing my community being talked about in stereotypes and monolithic terms,” Atencio said. “We are traveling the country to explore the issues that are driving young Hispanics at the ballot box this election season.”

A CYNOPSIS MESSAGE

IT’S TIME TO CELEBRATE!

Join CYNOPSIS and your peers on THURSDAY, APRIL 7 in New York City at our 2nd Annual SOCIAL GOOD AWARDS BREAKFAST as we honor everything from sustainability partnerships and PSA’s, to diversity campaigns, environmental initiatives, and more. Last year’s event sold out, so book your company’s table today!

PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Splash Entertainment is partnering with the New York City Ballet to develop, produce and distribute Daisy and The Nutcracker, educational and 3D-animated specials starring dancers from the NYC Ballet and based on its production of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker. Daisy was co-created by New York City Ballet and Mermaid Media, and written with Gabe Pulliam (Disney’s Octonauts).

UK production and publishing business Ten Alps has changed its name to Zinc Media. The rebrand reflects a new focus. “The name change is an important milestone in the reorganization and transformation of Ten Alps and is an opportunity to redefine the identity and ambition of the company,” said chief executive Mark Wood. “This is now an exciting and dynamic media organization which is focused on growing as a global TV producer, communications and branded content business and a cross-platform publisher.”

COMING UP

FabLab, a series created to encourage tween and teen girls’ interest in science, technology, engineering and math, premieres Thursday, March 3 at 8a on Fox stations nationally (check local listings). Available in 100 million homes, the show includes an “Ask Mayim” segment with Big Bang Theory’s Mayim Bialik, the “Samsung Solve for Tomorrow” competition and a national search to find guest reporters and hosts.

It’s all about remodeling and resale in Listed Sisters, premiering on HGTV Monday, March 28 at 8p. Nashville-based sibs Alana and Lex LeBlanc are “a natural fit for HGTV,” said Allison Page, GM of HGTV, DIY and Great American Country.

Smithsonian Channel is airing a 14-hour marathon of Aerial America today from 8a-10p, featuring the 14 participating Super Tuesday states. The series offers a birds-eye view of each state.

Season two of What History Forgot launches Saturday, March 5 at 10p on American Heroes Channel, with the reveal of “a chilling secret hidden in Nazi propaganda.”

ADVERTISING AND AGENCIES

Restructuring will cost 80 Starcom MediaVest Group employees their jobs. “We routinely evaluate all of our businesses to map to our client needs and the future,” the Publicis Groupe-owned company said in a statement. “As a result, we are making talent calibrations across our U.S. operations.” In the last few months, the company has lost business from Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola and Walmart.

Bouoyed by a 4Q15 scatter market that was “higher than ever,” CBS Corp. CEO Les Moonves said at an investor conference on Monday that, “We’re looking at a much stronger upfront than a year ago,” insisting, “the thought that network advertising is going down isn’t true.” As for the impact Donald Trump’s presidential run is having on revenue? Huge! “It might not be good America, but it’s damn good for CBS,” said Moonves of the company’s local TV and radio stations. “The money is rolling in.”

GLOBAL GOINGS ON

GRB Entertainment announced deals for several popular factual titles to TV4 Sweden (The Wildlife Docs, Untold Stories of the ER), ETV Africa (Braxton Family Values, Tamar & Vince), and MNET Africa (This is Hot 97).

Season four of History’s Vikings premiered as the number one show in its timeslot, beating all English-language cable channels in Singapore, Malaysia (excluding movies and sports channels) and the Philippines (excluding kids channels). Series airs as a same day telecast with the U.S. on History (StarHubTV Channel 401).

CASTING

Becki Newton (Ugly Betty) landed the female lead in Fox’s untitled comedy pilot from Chris Chase (Reba), about an African American former NFL lineman, his white wife (Newton) and her two quirky sons.

Sarah Shahi (Person of Interest) will star in CBS pilot Drew, a contemporary take on the classic Nancy Drew mystery stories, with intrepid Nancy a thirtysomething working for the NYPD.

Kate Jennings Grant (Love & Other Drugs) and J. August Richards (Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce) join the cast of ABC drama pilot Notorious. Story was inspired by the relationship between criminal defense attorney Mark Geragos and Larry King Live exec producer Wendy Walker.
