03/01/16: CBS eyes NFL streaming rights; Seeso debuts for Amazon Fire TV and Roku; Microsoft HoloLens developer version to ship March 30


Good morning. It’s Tuesday March 1, 2016, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.


It would seem that CBS’s OTT ambitions are growing by the day. In a call to investors, President and CEO Les Moonves said that the network is interested in acquiring the streaming the rights to NFL games ahead of next season. The games would be broadcast via CBS All Access, the network’s SVOD service. The NFL has yet to issue a public response to Moonves’s comments.
Turner announced that Turner Incite, the company’s core intelligence platform for advertising sales, will now be powered by the ad sales technologies of the IBM Watson platform, and make use of predictive analytics from MarketShare, an advanced analytics tool from the cloud-based information services company Neustar. "It’s a challenging but thrilling time in our industry,” Michael Strober, Turner’s EVP of Client Strategy and Ad Innovation, told Cynopsis Digital. “With tools like Turner Incite, now fueled by Watson Technologies and MarketShare, we can re-imagine advertising optimization in new ways. And when advertisers combine that access with Turner’s full suite of brands and advertising capabilities, opportunities are limitless. While some are frustrated by change, we are embracing and running with it together with our partners.”


The millennial-oriented multi-platform media company Fusion is set to launch Searching for the Latino Voter, a new series centering on Hispanic voters and the highly varied election issues that are most important to them.  Hosted by anchor Mariana Atencio, the series will air over the coming months across Fusion’s digital, social, and OTT platforms, as well as on the Fusion cable network’s newsmagazine AMERICA with Jorge Ramos.


has launched on Amazon Fire TV and Roku. NBCU’s comedy streaming service, which features over 2,000 hours of original and licensed content, launched in January for iOS, Android, and desktop. It stands to reason that NBCU would bring the channel to TV-connected devices: As Seeso chief Evan Shapiro told Cynopsis Digital last year, NBCU had always intended for Seeso to have something of the feel of a linear TV channel.

The major film festivals sure are starting to showcase new and emerging platforms. First it was Sundance and virtual reality; now the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival is set to embrace Snapchat. The new Tribeca Snapchat Shorts section, featuring a panel of judges including Jessica Alba and Steve Buscemi, will include ten comedic Snapchat Stories from from U.S. Snapchat users.


Before you watch the Super Tuesday election returns on cable news tonight, hop on over to Microsoft Bing. The search engine’s new Search Wave tool breaks down search volume for each presidential candidate based on state, gender, and age. Powered by Bing Predicts, the tool measures search volume using aggregate and anonymized data. Bing also released predictions for tonight’s primaries and caucuses: Donald Trump is projected to win all contests outside of Ted Cruz’s home state of Texas, while Hillary Clinton is projected to win all contests outside of Bernie Sanders’ home state of Vermont. The predictive tool uses data from polls, prediction markets, search-engine queries, and social media.
On March 30, Microsoft will begin shipping the new HoloLens augmented reality headset to developers. Unlike a VR headset such as the Oculus Rift, the HoloLens lets users explore the real world, projecting holographic animations into a wearer’s field of view. (Check out the Digital Spotlight section to see what that looks like.) Pre-orders are available now, but a quick note to all developers: your pockets had better be deep. The headset will sell for $3,000.


Many creators in the YouTube community will tell you “fair use” arguments will only get you so far, and that copyright claimants have too easy a time getting YouTube to remove their content. YouTube, it would seem, has taken note of those complaints. In a recent post, linked to in a tweet from CEO Susan Wojcicki, a member of YouTube’s policy team gave assurances that new initiatives are in the works to address creators’ concerns. Not many specifics were given, so it remains to be seen just how much will change. You can check out the post here.

Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

He finally got his. Leonardo DiCaprio’s Best Actor win at Sunday’s Academy Awards broke records on Twitter, spawning over 440,000 tweets per minute, making it far and away the most tweeted minute in the history of an Oscar telecast. (Ellen DeGeneres’s 2014 tweet of a celebrity-laden selfie, which garnered 250,000 tweets, comes in at a distant second.) DiCaprio won for his role in 20th Century Fox’s The Revenant.

Oddly enough, despite the racially charged subject matter of his opening monologue, Academy Awards host Chris Rock elicited a mostly neutral response from the Twitterverse: Of the 370,440 tweets that mentioned Rock, sentiment around him was 57% neutral, 27% positive and 16% negative, according to the marketing technology company Amobee.


As mentioned up top, Turner has made some major changes to its Turner Incite platform, adding analytics and tech solutions from IBM Watson and MarketShare. As it happens, the changes have necessitated an important new role at the company: James Russo will now serve as SVP, Client Strategy & Development. According to a release, Russo will “closely align with Turner’s Client Insights group, a division within Turner Research, to make recommendations to clients based on an insight-driven selling approach.” He will report to Michael Strober, EVP of Client Strategy and Ad Innovation. Russo joins Turner from Nielsen, where he served as SVP of Global Consumer Insights.
