Black News Channel has shut down two years after launch and is filing for bankruptcy. President/CEO Princell Hair broke the news in a memo to employees on Friday. “Due to challenging market conditions and global financial pressures, we have been unable to meet our financial goals, and the timeline afforded to us has run out,” he said. “Remember that we built something great here. BNC, or something very close to it, will surely return at some point, because the world needs it, and all of you have proven it can be done.” The Florida-based network averaged just 4000 viewers per program in 2021 but drew its biggest audience ever last week during the hearings for Supreme Court nominee Judge Ketanji Brown.

Paramount Global is raising $1 billion via a bond sale expected to close on March 29. The company (formerly known as ViacomCBS) said it plans to use the proceeds “for general corporate purposes, including the possible repayment of existing indebtedness.”

Fox News correspondent Benjamin Hall, who was seriously injured in Ukraine and has undergone multiple surgeries, “remains in good spirits despite everything he has endured,” Fox News Media CEO Suzanne Scott told staffers in an email. Hall has been transferred from a medical center in Germany to Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas.

As a show of support for Ukraine, programs from Russia are barred from this year’s International Emmy Awards competition. That includes programs produced by and/or co-produced with Russia-based companies, and programs originally made for a Russian-owned channel, network, or streaming platform.

TelevisaUnivision Inc. will adapt Mario Vargas Llosa’s comedic novel Captain Pantoja and the Special Service” as an exclusive Spanish-language series for ViX+, its SVOD service slated to launch in the second half of 2022. W Studios will produce. “As we build a brand that will be a beacon for Latin Cultures, we are congregating the Spanish-language creative community under one roof to elevate Hispanic storytelling and celebrate our unique and diverse stories,” said Rodrigo Mazón, EVP and general manager of ViX+.

Casting notes: Ian Bohen and Khylin Rhambo will join the actors reprising their roles from MTV’s “Teen Wolf” for MTV Entertainment Studios and Orion Television’s “Teen Wolf The Movie.” Also onboard are Vince Mattis, Nobi Nakanishi and Amy Lin Workman…Naveen Paddock (“New Amsterdam”) landed a series regular role for season two of Disney+’s “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.”…Charlotte Ritchie (UK’s “Ghosts”) will play the new female lead in season four of Netflix’s “You.”…Add Hendrix Yancey (“George & Tammy”) to the cast of Netflix true crime limited series “A Friend of the Family.”

Elle Johnson (“Bosch”) will write, EP and serve as showrunner for limited series “A Soldier’s Story,” an adaptation of Broadway’s “The Soldier’s Play.” The series in development at Sony Pictures Television has the play’s David Alan Grier attached to star and executive produce.

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

Season two of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building” kicks off Tuesday, June 28. This time around, Charles, Oliver and Mabel are implicated in the murder of Arconia Board President Bunny Folger and become the subjects of a competing podcast.

Also coming up for a second season is “Traffic!”, on Thursday, April 7 at 9p. The Africa Channel drama centers on a working mother who finds her integrity put to the test during a murder investigation.

“White Water Summer,” a reality show following Deschutes River raft guides as they navigate the rapids of crazy nightlife, demanding bosses, volatile relationships and wild clients premieres Wednesday, March 30 on discovery+.

CW’s “Nancy Drew” spinoff “Tom Swift” launches Tuesday, May 31 at 9p. The series centers on a brilliant, super-rich inventor (Tian Richards) thrust into a world of sci-fi conspiracy.

STREAMING

Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment inked a multi-year content deal with BBC Studios that will bring more than 2,500 hours of content to all current and future Crackle Plus streaming services including Crackle, Popcornflix, and Chicken Soup for the Soul. “The BBC has been producing highly sought-after content for years and we expect this content to perform exceptionally well on our streaming services,” said William J. Rouhana Jr., CEO of Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment. “The long-term nature of this agreement enables us to plan ahead to maximize the value of the content to our viewers as well as our advertisers, the BBC, and us.”

Curiosity Stream plans to raise its subscription price – currently $19.99/year – sometime this year. “We believe we are nearing the right time to better align the value we bring to our subscribers with the price of our subscription plan,” said CEO Clint Stinchcomb on an earnings call. “Even if our most popular annual plan pricing were to increase to $30 per year, it would still represent tremendous value.”

GOING GLOBAL

Fremantle’s unscripted dating series “Farming for Love” is coming to Canada’s CTV. The international format following the journeys of five rural Canadian singles on their quest for romance is produced by Lark Productions in collaboration with Fremantle and in association with CTV. Production begins later this year in British Columbia.

Sinking Ship Entertainment announced that season one of “Odd Squad,” from SSE and Fred Rogers Productions, has been acquired by France Télévisions.

Ratings for the first two rounds of the men’s NCAA tournament on CBS and Turner nets rose 12% this year versus 2021, with an average 9 million viewers per timeslot.

The debut of “Halo” on Paramount+ was the streamer’s most-watched premiere in its first 24 hours of release. “Yellowstone” prequel “1883” previously held the title.

Four weeks in and Food Network’s “Tournament of Champions” is posting a .9 P25-54 / 1.1 W25-54 Live+3 rating, up +30% versus the prior six weeks and +18% versus year-ago. Season to date, Food Network’s own March madness has reached more than 7.3 million P2+ viewers propelling the network into the #3 non-news/non-sports spot in Total Day among W25-54 and W18+.
