03/28/19: The American Expands With ESPN

Good morning. It’s Thursday March 28, 2019 and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

ESPN and the American Athletic Conference made it official, reaching a 12-year extension for the conference’s global media rights that strengthens the conference’s extensive existing presence on ESPN’s television networks and adds thousands of events on ESPN+, the direct-to-consumer sports streaming service, through 2031-32. The extension begins with the 2020-21 academic year.
 
Beginning in 2020-21, more than 130 football, men’s and women’s basketball games from The American will be aired annually on ESPN’s television networks, including its most high-profile events – the football championship game, the entire men’s basketball conference tournament and multiple rounds, including the championship game, from the women’s basketball conference tournament. New to ESPN’s TV rights beginning in 2020-21 are all Navy-controlled football games versus Notre Dame, plus first pick of the remaining Navy-controlled football games each year (excluding any games versus Army and Air Force).
 
The American events on ESPN+ will begin with the start of the new agreement, with more than 500 conference controlled events in 2020-21. Nearly 400 of those events will be football, men’s and women’s basketball and American sponsored Olympic sports championships. The overall number of events will ramp up to 750 the following season, with over 1,000 events annually beginning with the 2022-23 season.  

 
ON THE AIR
 
CBS Sports and Turner Sports have added University of Notre Dame Head Coach Mike Brey as a guest studio analyst for coverage of the 2019 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, Thursday, March 28, and Friday, March 29, on TBS and CBS, beginning at 6 p.m. ET.  Brey will join the Atlanta studio team – host Ernie Johnson and analysts Brendan Haywood, Candace Parker and Seth Davis – for Regional Semifinal coverage both days.
 
Fox Sports has added former MLB manager Joe Girardi to the broadcast booth for the ’19 season. Girardi will continue to work as an analyst for MLB Network.
 
CBS Sports continues its “Four Sides of the Story” franchise with March Madness Begins, airing on CBS Television Network on Sunday, April 7 at 3:00 PM, ET during Final Four weekend. The episode offers a look at the madness of the First Round of the NCAA Tournament through four different points of view: The NCAA ,The Fans, The Broadcasters and The Managers. Graduate assistants at #7-seed Nevada show how they prepare for a game in the NCAA Tournament – they not only watch and log game film, but also handle the packing, laundry and everything else it takes to get a team on the road.

TOPPS announced that its one-day offering on its TOPPSNOW platform for Ichiro Suzuki’s retirement topped 3,000 cards sold in 24 hours, putting Ichiro again near the top 10 for the platform since its launch three years ago.
 
VSiN (Vegas Stats & Information Network) announced a deal with Sling TV as a standalone channel for $4 per month starting this week.
 
MLB has expanded its relationship with Twitter to include a series of new short-form content initiatives for the ’19 season, including highlights of every home run hit during the season and a daily featured hitter category.  Special features will also be guilt in around events like the All-Star Game, Home Run Derby, playoffs, trade deadline and London Series, with live shows planned for each. Returning collaborations between MLB and Twitter include near-real-time game highlights shown on the platform and special hashtag-triggered emojis for all 30 teams.
