Longtime sports pillar Dick Stockton is retiring after a 55-year run on TV that spanned at least 1,545 network television games across the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL, more than any American sports broadcaster ever. He joined FOX Sports in 1994 and has been with the network ever since, serving as play-by-play announcer for NFL, MLB and college basketball.

“After a fulfilling 55-year career, I’ve decided to step aside, enjoying the many memorable events I’ve been blessed to cover, and ready to enjoy doing more things away from the broadcast booth,” Stockton said. “My 27 years at FOX Sports have been the most rewarding, and my talented production colleagues and a loyal, supportive management have made the experience more pleasurable than I had ever hoped. I wish everyone in my field could work for FOX Sports. Working alongside former players and coaches, many of whom are still in the FOX rotation, has been a particular joy. But I feel there is a time to call it a day and allow the many younger broadcasters the chance to develop their careers, just as I had the opportunity years ago. I have nothing but indelible memories of being part of the sports landscape for over seven decades and will now sit back and watch the future of sports broadcasting unfold.”

PROGRAMMING

After speculation that a move to ESPN was in the works, sports broadcaster Jim Nantz has re-signed with CBS Sports, according to FOS. Nantz’s agent, Sandy Montag of The Montag Group, told the site that the 61-year-old play-by-play announcer inked a contract extension with the network.

FOX Sports and the New York Racing Association are doubling down on their partnership, not only expanding their current agreement, but also making FOX Sports the official wagering partner of NYRA Bets. The prior FOX Sports/NYRA media rights agreement provided a FOX Sports subsidiary with an option to acquire a 25% stake in NYRA Bets, and the FOX Sports subsidiary will exercise this option by the summer of 2021, pending final regulatory approval. The newly announced agreement also provides a FOX Sports subsidiary with a future opportunity to increase its equity interest in NYRA Bets. Meanwhile, the new agreement will extend FOX Sports’ television rights with NYRA through 2030 and further expand exclusivity for daily racing at Belmont Park and Saratoga Race Course.

Speaking of deals, CBS Sports has been on a tear the past two days, announcing a slew of rights agreements to carry soccer. One agreement saw CBS Sports and IMG announced the details of an agreement for Paramount+ to serve as the exclusive English-language home in the US of qualifying matches for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 for the Concacaf region of North America, Central America and the Caribbean. The deal includes six away matches for both the United States and Mexico men’s national teams as well as the media rights to all other matches played in the region. Up to 79 matches will stream live on Paramount+ and CBS Sports has the ability to air select matches on linear platforms.

In addition, CBS Sports and Lega Serie A locked in a multi-platform agreement for exclusive U.S. rights to the Serie A Championship, the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana. Paramount+ will deliver more than 400 club matches live each season through 2024, featuring all 380 Serie A matches, at least 25 Coppa Italia matches including all contests from the fourth knockout round on Select matches will be televised each year on CBS Sports linear platforms including CBS Sports Network. Plus, CBS Sports and Argentine Football Distribution inked a multi-platform agreement for Paramount+ to serve as the exclusive English-language home in the U.S. of the Liga Profesional de Fútbol, Copa de la Liga Profesional, and, beginning in 2022, the Supercopa Argentina.

ESPN revealed its team of veteran hosts, analysts and insiders who will present the 2021 NFL Draft live coast-to-coast from Cleveland beginning April 29, at 8p on ESPN and ABC. For the third consecutive year, ESPN and ABC will provide distinct prime-time presentations on Day 1 and 2. ESPN will again offer the traditional draft telecast – a combination of X’s and O’s analysis, player highlights and storytelling – while ABC will cover the event with an emphasis on the individual journeys of NFL Draft prospects. On ESPN, Mike Greenberg will debut as host and lead ESPN’s 42nd NFL Draft on Day 1 and 2 with senior NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. and NFL analysts Louis Riddick and Booger McFarland, among others. On ABC, Rece Davis takes the hep as co-host, joining Maria Taylor, with college football analysts Kirk Herbstreit and Desmond Howard, and senior NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay. On Day 3, Davis will host the 2021 NFL Draft on ESPN and ABC with Kiper, McShay, Riddick, Mortensen and Schefter.

ESPN Networks revealed expanded coverage of the 26th season of Major League Soccer, kicking off on ABC and ESPN Deportes with Inter Miami CF/ LA Galaxy on April 18, at 3p. In 2021, ESPN Networks will feature MLS regular season coverage of more than 380 matches across ABC, ESPN and ESPN+, including a combined 32 matches across ABC (five), ESPN (26) and ESPN2 (1), while ESPN Deportes will carry Spanish-language telecasts of all 32 matches. During the season, ESPN will also televise two additional matches to showcase meaningful games to a broader national audience.

Triller Fight Club announced its broadcast lineups for the inaugural Triller Fight Club 2021 event on April 17 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The Pay-Per-View will include SNL star Pete Davidson, media personality and host of NBC’s Access Hollywood Mario Lopez, supermodel Taylor Hill, and internet stars Dixie and Charli D’Amelio. They will join Triller Fight Club co-owner Snoop Dogg as well as veteran boxing voices Ray Flores, Al Bernstein and Mike Coppinger as the commentating team for the event. The four-hour Pay-Per-View fight and entertainment spectacle will be headlined by the Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren fight and include performances by Justin Bieber, The Black Keys, Doja Cat, Saweetie, Diplo, Major Lazer and the exclusive world premiere of the hip hop supergroup Mt. Westmore.

At last, NBC Sports carries live coverage of the National Women’s Hockey League Isobel Cup Semifinals and Final today and tomorrow on NBCSN. Coverage begins Friday at 5p on NBCSN, when the top-seeded Toronto Six face the Boston Pride, followed by the second semifinal matchup between the Minnesota Whitecaps and Connecticut Whale. The winners will face off in the Isobel Cup Final on Saturday at 7p on NBCSN. Kate Scott (play-by-play), AJ Mleczko (analyst) and Caley Chelios (reporter) will call the action on-site.

NBC Sports also revealed its television schedule for the 2021 MotoGP season on NBC and NBCSN, beginning with the Grand Prix of Qatar on Sunday at 11:30p on NBCSN. All 19 races will be presented on NBCSN, and NBC will present premiere telecasts of four races:

SHOWTIME Sports and BELLATOR MMA locked in the announce team for the promotion’s debut on SHOWTIME, on April 2 at 9p. Mauro Ranallo will host the series and call the action alongside “Big” John McCarthy. Additional analysis and reporting will be provided by Jenn Brown and Josh Thomson with special guest contributions from A.J. McKee.

Telemundo Deportes presents Que Momento: La Verde Amarela, the story behind the most accomplished soccer team in the world, the Brazil National Team. The show runs Saturday at 11:30p on Telemundo, TelemundoDeportes.com and the Telemundo Deportes app, with a re-air on Universo on Monday at 1p. The show will be hosted by Andres Cantor and will feature interviews with renowned Brazilian soccer historians and legendary soccer.

Integrated Sports Media acquired rights to the “Duelo de Altura” an International Friendly soccer match between Ecuador and Bolivia on Monday at 4:30p. The match is available on cable Pay Per View via iN Demand and worldwide excluding Bolivia & Ecuador via FITE.TV and the FITE app for a suggested retail price of $19.95.

NBC Sports California’s coverage of the Sacramento Kings versus the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday will feature its first-ever exclusively women and non-binary announcing and coverage team across the live-game telecast, pregame and postgame shows, and social content. Krista Blunk will serve as play-by-play announcer alongside Kayte Hunter. NBC Sports California host Laura Britt will anchor Kings Pregame Live and Kings Postgame Live with Layshia Clarendon serving up pregame and postgame analysis, as well as in-game commentary. Color analyst Morgan Ragan will round out the cross-platform coverage by taking over NBC Sports California’s @NBCSKings Twitter account for the day.

In international news, the Setanta Sports Group secured a four-year renewal with the National Hockey League starting with the 2022-23 season through the 2025-26 season. As part of the exclusive deal, Setanta Sports channels will deliver live NHL games to hockey fans in Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.

WWE announced a new partnership with Virgin Media Television to broadcast highlights of WWE’s flagship programs Raw and SmackDown on free-to-air television for the first time in Ireland. Starting tomorrow, Virgin Media Two will air a one-hour version of Raw on Sundays at 10:30a and one-hour version of SmackDown on Saturdays at 10:30a.

The Athletic reports that Caesars will land naming rights to the famed Superdome, agreeing in principle to buy those rights under a 20-year deal that pays nearly $11 million per year. Officials reportedly are leaning toward calling it the Caesers Superdome.

The Los Angeles Dodgers announced that Dunkin’ will serve as the franchise’s Official Coffee and Official Donut as part of a multi-year partnership. Dunkin’ joins the lineup of food and beverage offerings debuting at Dodger Stadium for the 2021 season. TeamWorks Media announced that Chicago’s Goose Island Beer Company will become the presenting sponsor of Being Guillén, La Vida Baseball’s regular visit with the Guillén family for the opening month of the MLB season. The show will stream from the Goose Island Brewhouse opening week to coincide with the Cubs home opener and then April 8. before moving back to the La Vida Baseball studio in Chicago for the rest of the month.

Advance Auto Parts announced the “Advance My Track Challenge,” a grassroots program that celebrates the connection between NASCAR’s local short tracks, their communities and racing fans, showcasing 22 tracks throughout the United States and Canada. Fans have an opportunity to vote for their favorite track The track receiving the most votes in the final round will receive a $50,000 grand prize for track facility enhancements and community-based programs.

Verizon Media is launching of new video chat feature, Draft Together, and new subscription product, Yahoo Fantasy Plus. According to the company, the launch of the two new offerings advances Yahoo’s mission to shape the future of sports and fandom on mobile by offering compelling content, products and user experiences that make it easy for fans to engage and watch what, how and where they want. Alongside Yahoo Sportsbook, a platform offering sports betting content, analysis and insight that seamlessly allows users to place bets on the BetMGM platform, the new features and products further Verizon Media’s revenue diversification strategy.

Global sports business agency SPORTFIVE and UFC Hall of Famer Forrest Griffin announced a new exclusive, multi-platform original content partnership. As part of the relationship, SPORTFIVE and its activation and production agency, Rooftop2 Productions, will produce a variety of broadcast, branded and digital content leveraging the former-UFC Light Heavyweight Champion’s success in the cage and his on-camera talents.

ESPORTS

Overwatch League is upgrading the viewing experience for fans, revealing that games will now be offered in 4K for the first time with live and on-demand 4K matches available on its YouTube channel, website, and the mobile app. Other new initiatives include clip functionality as well as access to player cameras. Also, beginning with the Overwatch League Flash Ops Experimental Card Tournament broadcast on March 27-28 and continuing through the 2021 season, fans who watch live matches can earn rewards directly on the Overwatch League YouTube channel as well as on overwatchleague.com and the Overwatch League mobile app for League Tokens.

ESL Gaming mapped out a new mobile esports route for North America, Europe/MENA, and Asia-Pacific beginning with ESL Mobile’s inaugural 2021 Spring Season starting April 12th with a $650,000 prize pool and touching over 80 countries. The company partnered with Gameloft, Riot, Supercell, and Tencent for titles that will include Asphalt 9: Legends, Brawl Stars, Clash of Clans, Clash Royale, Legends of Runeterra, PUBG Mobile, and League of Legends: Wild Rift. Each season will offer two competitive tiers, ESL Mobile Open and the new ESL Mobile Challenge.

GCN and Van Wagner announced a tournament series described as “the most-comprehensive, large-scale national esports tournaments to reach the collegiate marketplace” and featuring teams from 10 NCAA conferences, with the top two finishers of each conference tournament advancing to play into a national tournament to crown an overall champion. The participating conferences will be America East Conference, Big South Conference, Big West Conference, Colonial Athletic Association, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Southland Conference, Sun Belt Conference, West Coast Conference, Western Athletic Conference and the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Van Wagner is the exclusive multimedia rights partner for each of the participating NCAA conferences and will be working to secure corporate sponsorships for these events as part of year-round efforts with each respective conference.

The Professional Fighters League announced that Hall of Famer and two-time Super Bowl winner Ray Lewis is joining the company to lead its newly created Athlete Advisory Board. In this role, Lewis will partner on efforts to advance the sport of MMA globally, identify and recruit new talent as well as further evolve the PFL’s fighter-first culture and mission.

Thrill One Sports & Entertainment, uniting Nitro Circus, Street League Skateboarding (SLS), Nitro Rallycross and Thrill One Media, announced that Steven Ziff will become the company’s Chief Marketing and Communications Officer. Ziff will join Thrill One from the Los Angeles Chargers where he has served as Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer since 2019.

MLB Network announced the promotion of two longtime senior producers, as Marc Caiafa was named Senior Vice President of Production and Josh Bernstein was named Vice President of Production. Caiafa will have oversight of all day-to-day content of the network, while Bernstein will guide the day-to-day content of the network.
