WarnerMedia sibs The CW and HBO Max jointly acquired “Wellington Paranormal,” which launched on New Zealand’s TVNZ2 in 2018. The mockumentary, following two police officers from the “What We Do in the Shadows” feature film (not to be confused with the FX series based on the movie), will launch on The CW this summer, with episodes available to stream the day after the linear premiere.

With its telecast cut from the usual two hours to a pre-taped one hour, the 27th Annual SAG Awards will not include the presentation of a Life Achievement Award this year. It’s the first time since 1981 (when an award to President Ronald Reagan was rescinded) that it hasn’t been given out. Thirteen awards will be presented Sunday, April 18 on TNT and TBS.

The Department of Justice urged a US District Court judge to reject an argument by content creators that YouTube isn’t entitled to the protection of Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which shields web companies from lawsuits over their content moderation decisions. In a class-action complaint, YouTube creators argued that Section 230 violates the First Amendment by allowing the suppression of speech based on viewpoint.

“PEOPLE (the TV Show!)” has been renewed for three additional seasons, through 2024. Since its debut in September 2020, across Meredith’s local markets, the show has seen a 12.2% increase in HH ratings and a 12% increase in P25-54. “The fact is PEOPLE is retaining over 80% of the news magazine time periods we moved into, on par with the best-in-class,” noted Meredith Local Media Group President Patrick McCreery. “Most other news magazine shows struggle to retain their own audience at equal levels.”

Boat Rocker Media (“Orphan Black”) closed a $170 million initial public offering on the Toronto Stock Exchange. “Following the completion of our IPO we have enhanced balance sheet strength and financial flexibility to advance our growth strategy, against a backdrop of robust and growing demand for content globally,” said CEO John Young. “We are now in an ideal position to pursue a range of initiatives designed to further expand our creative and commercial capabilities and deliver shareholder value.”

Jay Leno apologized to activist group Media Action Network for Asian Americans for past jokes about Asian American communities. “I do not consider this particular case to be another example of cancel culture but a legitimate wrong that was done on my part,” said Leno. “MANAA has been very gracious in accepting my apology. I hope that the Asian American community will be able to accept it as well, and I hope I can live up to their expectations in the future.”

Writers on ABC quiz show “The Chase” went on strike

after the Writers Guild of America was unable to come to an agreement with producer ITV America. “We have alerted Writers Guild members that ITV America is refusing to honor the choice of writers at ‘The Chase’ to be represented by the union and to receive pension and health benefits, residuals, and the other basic provisions of our industry wide MBA [Minimum Basic Agreement],” said Lowell Peterson, executive director of the Writers Guild of America, East. “Guild members will stand united in not crossing the picket line at ‘The Chase.”

Wolf pack: CBS renewed Dick Wolf’s “FBI” for season four and “FBI: Most Wanted” for season three, and gave a series order for “FBI: International.” “FBI is the fastest growing brand on television and our partner Dick Wolf has found yet another creative way to expand its universe,” said Kelly Kahl, President, CBS Entertainment. “FBI: International is an intriguing and distinct drama that perfectly complements its compelling siblings, FBI and FBI: Most Wanted, creating an enviable triple-threat for next season that will fit seamlessly across our network lineup.”

Jamie Foxx and his producing partner Datari Turner inked a deal with ViacomCBS’ MTV Entertainment Group to develop end executive produce movies with BIPOC filmmakers focused on diverse storytelling. “Together, we share a vision of cultivating emerging BIPOC filmmakers and telling multicultural stories that will make an impact,” said Trevor Rose, EVP, Head of Talent and Content Development for MTVE.

Heyday Television nabbed the rights to upcoming book Apples Never Fall, from Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty. The novel, about a seemingly perfect family whose mother disappears, will be published in September.

Dramedy “Beef,” from A24, has been picked up by Netflix. Steven Yeun (“The Walking Dead”) and Ali Wong (“Love, Victor”) star as two people consumed by a road rage incident. Lee Sung Jin (“Dave”), creator and showrunner, said he was “grateful to the guy who yelled at me in traffic three years ago. I did not let it go, and now we have a show.”

Lifetime ordered a third movie about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, to premiere in fall 2021.”Harry & Megan: Escaping the Palace,” produced by Merideth Finn and Michele Weiss, follows “Harry & Meghan” and “Harry & Meghan: Becoming Royal.”

Issa Rae (“Insecure”) inked an overall deal with WarnerMedia giving HBO, HBO Max and Warner Bros. Television exclusive rights to TV projects from Rae’s company, HooRae. “We have been in business with Issa for more than eight years, and we couldn’t be prouder of our collaboration,” said Casey Bloys, Chief Content Officer for HBO and HBO Max. “This new deal is an opportunity to leverage the strength of WarnerMedia to provide a multitude of platforms for Issa’s formidable talents as a producer and storyteller.”

Disney+ greenlit ten episodes of “National Treasure,” a reimagined version of the 2004 film, told from the point of view of a 20-year-old DREAMer. The film’s writers, Marianne and Cormac Wibberley, will write, and executive produce with Jerry Bruckheimer. Studio is ABC Signature.

Twin Cities PBS announced “America Outdoors with Baratunde Thurston” (wt), a six-part series that will begin production in April for broadcast in Spring 2022. Hosted by bestselling author (How to Be Black), podcast creator and host (“How to Citizen with Baratunde”) Thurston, the series will follow the outdoor enthusiast on a journey to explore the regions across the US.

Wayne Che Yip (“Hunters”) has joined Amazon Studios series “Lord of the Rings” as a co-executive producer and director. “Every day I look forward to working with the incredible team here in New Zealand as we humbly contribute to the legacy of the greatest stories ever told,” said Yip.

Casting notes: Evan Peters (“American Horror Story”) will play the title character in Netlfix limited series “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. Also onboard are Niecy Nash (“Scream Queens”) and Penelope Anne Miller (“Gaslight”)…Model Kaia Gerber, daughter of Cindy Crawford and Rande Gerber, has joined the cast of Ryan Murphy’s “AHS: Double Feature.”…Alexander SIddig (“Game of Thrones”) will star opposite Charlie Hunnam in Apple drama”Shantaram.”

NEW & RETURNING SERIES

The third and final season of Netflix’s “The Kominsky Method” launches Friday, May 28. Michael Douglas is reunited with Kathleen Turner (“Romancing the Stone,” “The Jewel of the Nile,” “War of the Roses”), who will play his ex-wife for the show’s final run.

“Cakealikes,” featuring cake artists sculpting doubles of celebrities, makes its Food Network premiere on Monday, April 5 at 10p. Three days later comes the series debut of “Chef Boot Camp” at 10p.

Swedish detective drama Backstrom starts streaming Monday, April 26 on Acorn TV.

Family-owned restaurants in trouble get an assist from restaurateur and philanthropist Todd Graves in “Restaurant Recovery,” streaming on discovery+ starting Thursday, April 15.

STREAMING

Disney+ is raising its price in the US from $6.99 to $7.99 per month, effective tomorrow. The bundle including Disney+, Hulu with ads, and ESPN+ is also going up by one dollar, to $13.99.

Twenty-one Yankees games will be available to stream at no extra cost for Amazon Prime Video members this season. First in the lineup: The Yankees the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday, April 18.

COMING UP

Cher’s race to Pakistan to help move a four-ton elephant more than 2,300 miles in the midst of a global pandemic is chronicled in “Cher & The Loneliest Elephant,” beginning on Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, on Paramount+. The US and Canada Smithsonian Channel linear premiere is scheduled for Wednesday, May 19 at 8p.

Discovery is offering a month-long celebration in honor of Earth Day. In addition to original documentary programming launching on discovery+ like “Expedition Deep Ocean” (April 1) and “First to the Top of the World” (April 8), Discovery Channel and Animal Planet will hold marathons of beloved series. “For us at Discovery, we look to celebrate our planet and the incredible people, places and wildlife who call it home each and every day,” said Nancy Daniels, Chief Brand Officer, Discovery & Factual. “Earth Day is a welcomed reminder of the important work that has to be done in order to preserve and protect our planet, but also to celebrate the beauty of our natural world.”

HBO documentary “Our Towns” looks at how the rise of civic and economic reinvention is transforming small cities and towns across the country, on Tuesday, April 13 at 9p.

Anthony Anderson (“black-ish”) will host the 8th Annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards, to be held virtually on Saturday, April 3.

The Multicultural Media & Correspondents Association is presenting its 1st Annual Sheroes in Media Awards on March 31. The event will be co-emceed by MSNBC’s Alicia Menendez and Richard Lui.

With breast cancer as the leading cause of cancer death among Hispanic women in the US, breast cancer organization Susan G. Komen and Telemundo announced a two-year partnership to provide Hispanic women with culturally relevant information across Telemundo’s platforms, and access to key Komen resources. The organizations will work together to help raise funds in support of education and other critical breast cancer initiatives benefiting the Latino community.

The Scripps Howard Foundation has selected the University of North Texas and Elon University as the recipients of grants from its new program for emerging journalists. “We are partnering with these esteemed institutions to create real-world opportunities for youth that foster an interest in journalism and open pathways to higher education,” said Scripps Howard Foundation President and CEO Liz Carter. A total of $600,000 was given to the schools.

Acorn TV and ZDF announced the commissioning of UK drama “The Chelsea Detective” with Acorn Media Enterprises from Expectation (“In My Skin”). Created by Peter Fincham, the series stars Adrian Scarborough (“Killing Eve”).

Angelica Films and London-based Nevision are co-producing a BBC special, “Pale Sister,” in association with Riverside Studios. “Pale Sister” is presented as part of BBC Lights Up, a festival of UK theater adapted for TV and radio at a time when theatrers throughout the UK are closed.

DCD Rights has secured international sales for a number of e history and wildlife factual titles. “Living with Hitler” has been acquired by UKTV for Yesterday, GEO Television and n-tv for German Speaking Europe, YLE Finland, Expressive Media Spain, Beijing Taihe Legend Films China, Radio Television Hong Kong, Czech TV and Channel Hot8 Israel. “Fatal Shot” has been sold to Spektrum – Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia, Beijing Taihe Legend Films China and Radio Television Hong Kong.

Portfolio Entertainment has secured new deals for 2D animated series “The Cat In The Hat Knows A Lot About That!” with UK’s Sky Kids, which is also taking four educational games.

Fugitive has entered into a new partnership with South African entertainment company MultiChoice, becoming the exclusive distributor for the premium, scripted Originals made available on its M-Net channel and Showmax SVOD platform.

RATINGS

There wasn’t a lot of movement in syndication ratings the week ending March14, according to Nielsen. Most moves were a tenth of a rating point, and barely half the shows moved either way. In talk, “Live with Kelly and Ryan” (1.8, down 5%) and “Dr. Phil” (0.7, down 6%) were both off only one tenth. Among the other leaders, “Maury” (1.0, unchanged) was steady while “Ellen” (0.9, down 10%) and “Wendy” (0.9, down 10%) both took slight breathers. Sophomore “Tamron Hall” was steady at 0.8, and newcomer “Drew Barrymore” held steady at 0.5.

Total Day Impressions for right-wing news net Newsmax TV are up +16% in 1Q20 versus the prior quarter, versus +2% for CNN and MSNBC and -20% for Fox News, reports Newsmax. Total Daytime Impressions are up +17%, according to the network, compared to +14% for CNN, +13% for MSNBC and-11% for FNC.

Nick Pepper has been tapped to serve as head of studio creative content at Amazon Studios, overseeing IP and talent management. Pepper was most recently President of Legendary TV.

Katrina Cukaj has been elevated to lead advertising sales/client partnerships at WarnerMedia. Previously, she had been lead of marketing/creative/network partnerships. Cukaj replaces Joe Hogan, who is leaving the company.
