IN THE NEWS

NBCU will offer iSpot.tv data as its official cross-platform “currency partner” starting with the May upfront. “Now is the time to embrace change,” said Kelly Abcarian, EVP of Measurement & Impact for NBCU, at the company’s One22 event on Tuesday. “We’re heading to Radio City, and this year’s upfront, ready to activate against iSpot’s cross-platform audience.” NBCU has certified eight more companies for audience measurement and audience verification. That said, “Our certifications aren’t permanent or set in stone,” noted Abcarian. “In a space as dynamic as measurement, companies must keep pace with consumer behavior.”

Seven series scored early renewals from The CW. “The Flash” will be back for season nine; “Riverdale” for season seven; “All American” for season five; “Nancy Drew” for season four; and “Kung Fu,” “Superman & Lois” and “Walker” for third seasons. “As we prepare for the 2022-23 season, these scripted series, along with the alternative series we renewed earlier, will serve as the start of a solid foundation utilizing some of our most-watched series for us to build on for next year and beyond,” said Mark Pedowitz, network Chairman and CEO. “These dramas are also important to our overall digital strategy, as they are some of our most-streamed and socially-engaged programming, and we look forward to adding more new and returning series to help strengthen and expand our multiplatform footprint.”

Disney has postponed its management retreat, slated for next week, as the company deals with backlash over the company’s initially tepid response to Florida’s “Don’t Say Gay” bill. During a town hall on Monday, Disney CEO Bob Chapek expressed regret over not taking a more public stance against the bill, and said the company supported the LGBTQ+ community in its pursuit of lasting change. On Tuesday, Disney’s FX Networks, Hulu, ESPN, Disney World, Disney+ and more posted their commitment to support LGBTQ+ colleagues, friends, families and fans.

The history of cable TV, from its humble, low-budget beginnings to today’s premium programming, will be explored in a new podcast, “Basic!”. Produced with Pantheon Media, the series from cable veteran Doug Herzog TV, critic Jen Chaney and SiriusXM launches Wednesday, May 18. “As a career cable weasel, I’m thrilled to bring the secret history of basic cable to ears everywhere,” said Herzog, former President of Viacom Music and Entertainment Group. “It never had the same respect of network television, HBO or even the streamers who threatened to make it obsolete. But with a chip on its shoulder, it managed to change the TV landscape forever.”

Sixty watchdog organizations have banded together to urge Congress to pass new laws that would protect minors, including a ban on serving behaviorally targeted ads to young people. “We are deeply concerned that young people, who are spending more and more time online, are being targeted in unfair ways by online platforms and apps that take advantage of their developmental vulnerabilities,” said the group, which counts Fairplay, Consumer Federation of America, Center for Digital Democracy, and Public Citizen among them, in a letter to lawmakers.

BET has renewed “Tyler Perry’s The Oval” for season four and “Tyler Perry’s Sistas” for a fifth season. “Sistas” and “The Oval” are the #1 and #2 series currently airing on cable with African Americans P2+, respectively. “The Oval” season three averaged 1.3 million Total viewers Live+3 per episode, and “Sistas” season four averaged 1.6 million Total Viewers Live+3 on BET and BET Her.

Veteran play-by-play announcer Al Michaels is moving from NBC to Amazon to serve as the voice of “Thursday Night Football,” reports the New York Post. Amazon landed rights for Thursday night games beginning this year.

Nielsen Holdings rejected a $9 billion takeover offer from a group led by Elliott Management Corp., saying the consortium’s offer “significantly undervalues the company.” Nielsen said it is proceeding with its previously-approved plan to make $1 billion stock repurchases. “As Nielsen’s 2021 financial results demonstrate, the company is achieving strong revenue growth while making significant progress in new product development and MRC reaccreditation,” said the company.

Donald Trump Jr. and former President Trump’s spokesperson Taylor Budowich are launching a free mobile news aggregation app, reports Axios. MxM News (minute by minute) will help people “get trustworthy news and information about topics that matter and impact their lives,” said Trump Jr. “We view it as an important public service and also believe it will be a great business.” MxM News will be available at launch on Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android operating system.

UPFRONTS UPDATES & CALENDAR

“When we look at the total video business, streaming has exploded in the last few years, and people are not going back,” said Linda Yaccarino, Chairman, Global Advertising Sales and Partnerships at NBCUniversal. Speaking at the company’s One22 presentation, Yaccarino noted that NBCU’s ad-supported offering, Peacock, with light ad loads targeted to improve the consumer experience, makes more sense now than ever. “As consumer prices have gone up — be it your gas, your groceries or your subscription services — it’s no surprise that ad-supported streaming has exceeded subscription streaming in the number of hours watched in the US,” she said. NBCU announced it is expanding programmatic access to advertising inventory on Peacock, enabling clients to activate campaigns across media companies through OpenAP.
