IN THE NEWS

CBS’ “The Talk” will remain dark through this week, following a controversy that continues to spiral after a March 10 episode during which co-host Sharon Osbourne unleashed pointed comments on fellow co-host Sheryl Underwood while discussing Piers Morgan’s reaction to Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s interview with Oprah. The show went on an initial two-day hiatus last week but that break has now been extended, as CBS investigates the situation.

Six time’s a charm: Veteran director Glenn Weiss will be back for the sixth straight year to helm the 93rd annual Oscars. While it’s still tbd whether the show will have a host, its producers are promising a program like no other before, noting: “Our plan is that this year’s Oscars will look like a movie, not a television show, and Glenn has embraced this approach and come up with ideas on how to achieve this.”

Among early Producers Guild of America award winners, announced Saturday, are season 3 of Apple TV’s “Carpool Karaoke: The Series,” for outstanding short form program; “The Power of We: A Sesame Street Special for outstanding children’s program”; and BRCvr, an event that’s part of the Burning Man universe, which won the Innovation Award. The rest of the awards, in television, film and documentary categories, will be handed out March 24.

Christopher Nolan’s latest time-hopping thriller, “Tenet,” will get its HBO Max debut Saturday, May 1. The acclaimed director has been vocally opposed to the decision by the streamer’s parent WarnerMedia to release all Warner Bros. 2021 movies simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max. “Tenet” has grossed nearly $58 million in North America, and $363 million worldwide.

The Toyko Olympics and Paralympic Games will not have in-person foreign spectators. The decision by Olympic Organizing Committee and Tokyo Governor Koike Yuriko, made over the weekend, is a move to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

ViacomCBS and MTV Entertainment Group inked a multiyear partnership with Raedio, through which the audio-everywhere company will provide library catalog access and original music for affiliated brands across its portfolio. Among initial activations, Raedio, whose bespoke library comprises an array of musical genres, will music-supervise installments across VH1’s “Love & Hip” Hop franchise.

A California lawmaker introduced a bill that would limit the length of exclusive options that bind series regulars to lengthy exclusive contract windows. Noting “The landscape of the entertainment industry has dramatically changed, yet companies still benefit from outdated laws that allow them to wield an overwhelming amount of control over artists,” Democratic State Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez introduced the Free Artists from Industry Restrictions, or AB 1385. The bill also would enable recording artists to get out of contracts after seven years without the threat of being sued for damages by record labels.

Disney’s US employees can begin returning to their offices after July 4. According to Deadline, employees were notified via an internal company video that was emailed out.

ABC’s “The Connors” is dedicating its season 3 finale to the longtime member of the show’s crew who died last week on set. Terrel Richmond died after a “fatal medical event,” according to the show’s production company Werner Entertainment.

A treasure trove of artifacts belonging to the late Carl Reiner including scripts, notes, photos and film are being donated by Reiner’s family to the National Comedy Center, which will unveil a multimedia exhibit on the comedy legend in 2022. The collection includes items dating back to his work on “Your Show of Shows” and “The Dick Van Dyke Show.”
