Netflix landed the most Oscar nominations, with 35 – handily beating its last year’s total, 24. “Mank” accounted for 10 of the nods. Among other streamers, Amazon Studios collected 12 nominations, for “Sound of Metal,” “One Night in Miami,” “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” and “Time.” Andra Day was nominated for Hulu’s “The United States Vs. Billie Holiday,” and Disney+ scored its first nominations, for “Onward,” “Soul,” “Mulan,” “The One and Only Ivan,” and “Nomadland.” Apple earned noms for “Wolfwalkers” and “Greyhound.”
CBS’ “The Talk” is on a brief hiatus as the network conducts an internal investigation into an argument that took place between the show’s co-hosts last week. Sharon Osbourne’s defense of fellow countryman Piers Morgan, who questioned the validity of Meghan Markle’s comments to Oprah Winfrey about mental health struggles, drew sharp criticism from Osbourne’s co-hosts. Osbourne later apologized for her remarks, and told Variety she was “hurt, caught off guard and stunned by what I was being asked and not prepared.”
Rogers Communications has agreed to buy Shaw Communications in a $16 billion deal. Not only will the transaction create long-term value for both companies’ shareholders, Rogers CFO Tony Staffieri told analysts, “just as important, this transaction will ensure Canada’s cable and wireless industry can support the significant capital requirements needed for 5G networks and the essential connectivity that rural Canadians desperately need.”
The day after announcing his retirement from the NFL, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees joined NBC Sports. He’ll serve as an analyst for Notre Dame Games, and on “Sunday Night Football.” “We know that Drew will apply the same work ethic and continuously positive attitude to everything he touches at NBC Sports,” said NBC Sports chairman Pete Bevacqua. “And we know, as his new teammates, he’ll make us better.”
Fox Corp. AVOD Tubi plans to branch out into original programming, reports Bloomberg, starting with movies, and is in talks with potential advertising partners. But Tubi won’t play with a Netflix-size budget. At an investors’ conference, last week, Fox Corp. CEO Steve Tomsic said original content would be “cheap and cheerful.” Tubi’s on-demand library currently includes over 30,000 titles.

TLC picked up a third season of “1,000-lb. Sisters.” Season two of the reality show finished #1 in its timeslot among W24-54, 18-49 and 18-34, averaging 1.5 million P2+ viewers.
Fox Entertainment-owned Bento Box has launched an animation studio in Australia with Princess Pictures (“Summer Heights High”). Princess Bento Studio will produce animated content for platforms in the US and Australia, and countries that have co-production treaties with Australia.
World of Wonder Productions (“RuPaul’s Drag Race”) announced a makeup competition series. “Painted With Raven,” starring “Drag Race” makeup artist Raven, will be exec produced by RuPaul alongside Randy Barbato, Fenton Bailey, and Tom Campbell of World of Wonder. The reality series will debut on streaming platform WOW Presents Plus later this year.

Martha Stewart is taking over the “Chopped” kitchen in five-episode stunt “Chopped: Martha Rules,” premiering Tuesday, April 13 at 9p on Food Network. Set in an outdoor kitchen in Kennebunkport, Maine, Stewart does things her way as sixteen chefs compete for the $50,000 grand prize.
“Secrets of the Whales,” filmed over three years, premieres on Disney+ on Earth Day, April 22. The four-part series narrated by Sigourney Weaver reveals the communication systems and social structures of five different whale species.
Season two of “A Tiny Audience” premieres Friday, March 19 on HBO Max, and DirecTV and DirecTV Go in Latin America.

Philo and Best Buy have reteamed for a new promotion: customers without a Philo subscription who are buying certain streaming products can get a subscription for $1 for the first month (regular Price: $20). The promotion runs through April.

Regional Mexican radio host Alberto “El Terri” Cortez will make his acting debut on Telemundo’s “La Suerte de Loli” on Thursday, March 18 at 9p. Alberto Cortez – aka “El Terrible” – left his radio booth in Los Angeles to travel to Miami to shoot his scenes at the soundstages in Telemundo Center.

Amazon Prime Video has created a digital experience for Eddie Murphy film ”Coming 2 America,” enabling fans to immerse themselves in exclusive content from the film, and participate in exclusive product drops. The content hub will house content from Prime Video and their partners including HSTRY, UOMA Beauty and Def Jam Recordings.
Alibaba might have to sell some of its media assets, according to the Wall Street Journal, which reports the Chinese government is apparently concerned about the power the entertainment giant has to influence public opinion. Not so, responded Alibaba, saying, “The purpose of our investments in these companies is to provide technology support for their business upgrade and drive commercial synergies with our core commerce businesses. We do not intervene or get involved in the companies’ day-to-day operations or editorial decisions.”
Walmart is prepping an HD-only streaming stick that will be sold under its Onn brand and powered by Android TV, according to FCC documents. In November came word that Walmart was reportedly talking to Comcast about making the Xfinity Plex platform the OS engine that powers Onn smart TVs.

ITV has acquired the exclusive free to air rights in the UK for seasons 3 and 4 of Wiggleywoos series “The Day Henry Met,” set to launch on littleBe, a block dedicated to programming for preschool children, this summer.
Beyond Rights revealed its spring content slate, introducing a range of unscripted content from a variety of different genres, a new kids’ series, and numerous returning seasons. In total, the business is launching more than 200 new hours into the international market.

Despite putting on a solid Grammys show, CBS scored all-time-low 8.8 million viewers across platforms, down from 18.8 million last year. The show scored a 2.1 rating among A18-49, down from last year’s low of 5.4.
The season two premiere of HGTV’s “Rock the Block” delivered a .67 Live+3 rating among P25-54 on Monday, March 8, a 31% increase over the season one premiere and a 52% lift over the prior six weeks. The net’s “100 Day Dream Home” averaged a 0.54 Live+3 rating among P25-54 during its sophomore season, up 37% over the prior six weeks and a 21% lift over the season one average.
