IN CONVERSATION WITH… Carolina Lightcap, GM of Discovery Kids Media
Discovery International launched Discovery Kids Media to develop, commission, co-produce and distribute kids animated and live-action content. Carolina Lightcap, EVP and chief content officer for DLA/USH, will add to her responsibilities the leadership of DKM as GM, and Danielle Davies joins as VP, kids content partnerships and revenue for DKM. The DKM team also will manage Discovery’s participation in joint venture agreements for kids productions, such as the recently announced redknot, a joint venture between Discovery and Nelvana. redknot just announced greenlights for two animated series: The Dog & Pony Show, created by Josh Selig, and Agent Binky: Pets of the Universe, based on the Kids Can Press graphic novels. Why is now the time to launch DKM, and what are the primary differences between the new unit and the existing Discovery Kids in Latin America?
The goal is to leverage the strength of Discovery Kids in Latin America, as the leading preschool network in the region. DKM will be working with Discovery Kids to source content earlier in the process, allowing us to retain rights inside and outside of Latin America. The shows themselves can be created anywhere in the world. For example, Big Top Academy, our co-production with Canada’s Apartment 11 and Cirque du Soleil, was shot entirely in Montreal in English. We have also produced animated shows in Canada in the past, natively in English, which were later dubbed into Spanish, Portuguese and other languages. With DKM exploiting the content to linear broadcasters and digital platforms internationally, we become an even more attractive partner to content creators and producers as well as networks in other territories.
There’s a rising trend in international co-productions in the kids media realm. How does this environment benefit DKM?
We have been active in co-productions for quite some time, working with companies such as eOne Family and Zodiak Kids. Now with DKM, we’ll continue to work in a collaborative manner with other partners, and look forward to deepening our relationships with the most diverse creators and studios

In what ways does this new business model help the company?
DKM gives us the flexibility to work on a broader variety of projects, both commissions as well as co-productions, for both linear and digital content. In addition, it allows us to maximize the potential of each property, since we’re able to design a full franchise plan taking into account all windows and products in order to deliver a comprehensive consumer experience.   
What types of companies are you looking to partner with?
We look for companies or individuals bringing forth a unique creative vision in their projects, aimed at kids ranging from 4 to 8 years old. We’re especially keen on creators that can help us break new ground, as the kids landscape continues to change and evolve. 
DKM has 15 projects in production. What can you share about your pipeline? 
We have three shows ready to be shared with the world: Mini Beat Power Rockers, the No. 1 series on Discovery Kids Latin America; the recently launched Big Top Academy; and Zu & Her Zoo, along with a number of shows in development. At this time, we’re focusing on the three series that are ready for distribution. We look forward to making more announcements in the near future. 
China video-sharing app TikTok will pay a $5.7 million US Federal Trade Commission fine to settle allegations it illegally collected personal information including names, email addresses and locations from children under the age of 13 via its video-sharing app Musical.ly. The TikTok fine sets a new record for a child privacy case, according to the FTC, which said an investigation of Musical.ly “uncovered disturbing practices, including collecting and exposing the location” of kids. TikTok, despite receiving thousands of complaints from parents, had failed to comply with requests to delete information. TikTok said it will create “measures” to protect users, including parental tools.
Litton Entertainment and Karlie Kloss Kode With Klossy are partnering to create and distribute a new public service announcement to inspire young women to pursue their passions in a technology-driven world. The PSA will air on platforms including the three-hour programming block Litton’s Weekend Adventure, which airs Saturday mornings on ABC stations nationwide, and The CW’s three-hour Saturday morning block One Magnificent Morning. Kode With Klossy hosts free two-week summer coding camps for women ages13-18 in cities across the US.
Beginning this week, Fred Rogers’ Productions Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, will be sponsored by 529 College Savings Plans. As part of the 18-month partnership, a series of 15-second recognition spots produced by Bozell will be shown before and after each episode on PBS Kids as well as in streaming videos on PBSKids.org. The spots were developed to inform families about the tax advantages of 529 plans and the importance of saving as early as possible for children’s higher education. FRP also will provide banners and clickable 529 College Savings Plans logos for the Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood page on the PBS Parents website.

9 Story Media Group closed an agreement with King Bert Productions to develop and co-produce The World’s Worst Children, based on the popular children’s books written by David Walliams. The new 2D animated series will be produced by King Bert Productions and 9 Story Media Group’s animation studio Brown Bag Films; 9 Story Distribution International has worldwide distribution rights, along with international merchandising and licensing rights to be run by 9 Story Brands. The animated sketch show, aimed at K6-11, follows a collection of the “worst-behaved, foulest-smelling, grubbiest kids” in extraordinary and “charmingly repulsive” stories.
Thor: Ragnarok filmmaker Taika Waititi will co-write and direct the pilot for a potential series adaptation of Terry Gilliam-directed movie Time Bandits, currently in development Apple. Waititi also will serve as exec producer alongside Gilliam and producer Dan Halsted (People Of Earth).
BattleBots will be back this summer for a second season on both Discovery and Science Channel, with Chris Rose and Kenny Florian returning for play-by-play and Faruq Tauheed back as ring announcer in the series featuring next-gen robots from around the world duking it out for supremacy.
The Baby-Sitter Club is back. Netflix ordered a 10-part episodic live-action series based on the best-selling book series from Ann M. Martin. Walden Media, producer of The Chronicles of Narnia, will produce and Michael De Luca, producer of Escape at Dannemora will exec produce alongside Lucy Kitada. Glow’s Rachel Shukert will be showrunner.
Live-action preschool series Oda Upside Down is the first kids production from Danish production house SAM Productions. Charismatic Oda is a good fairy and a magic inventor who helps children reconquer their right to fantasy and imagination when confronted by their strict kindergarten teacher. Series is created by Ida Mule Scott and Iben Albinus Sabroe, directed by Oliver Ussing and produced by Stine Meldgaard and Emilie Lebech Kaae.
Animated preschool series Corn & Peg, produced by Nelvana Studios, debuted on Nickelodeon on Monday, March 4, at 12:30p. Series follows the friendship between Corn, a loveable Unicorn, and Peg, a plucky Pegasus, who share the same unbridled enthusiasm for doing good deeds. Corn & Peg features a social-emotional curriculum that highlights empathy and kindness, and a school readiness curriculum emphasizing colors, math, directions, and health and wellness.
Sherwood, the just-out, 10-ep YouTube Premium animated series set in the dystopian future of 2270 and based on the mythology of Robin Hood, follows 14-year-old Robin and her friends’ battles with the wealthy Upper City as they strive to overcome inequality and fight for justice. Voice cast incudes Anya Chalotra (The Witcher), Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf), Aneurin Barnard (The Goldfinch) and Jamie Chung (The Gifted), with guest star Joseph Fiennes (The Handmaid’s Tale). Series is produced by Baby Octopus, New Zealand’s Toybox and Ireland’s Giant.
Spinoff Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists is set to debut on Freeform on Wednesday, March 20 at 8p. Everything about the town of Beacon Heights seems perfect, from its top-tier college to its overachieving residents – but nothing is as it appears to be, and someone snaps and kills someone. New series characters include PLL favorites Alison DiLaurentis and Mona Vanderwaal. Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists is produced by Alloy Entertainment and Long Lake Media in association with Warner Horizon Scripted Television.
New CN series Victor and Valentino premieres Saturday, March 30 at 9:30a, with a slew of supernatural adventures.
After close to a decade of adventures, Discovery Family’s My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic heads into its final 26-ep ninth season Saturday, April 6 at 11:30a. Fan faves Quibble Pants (voiced by Patton Oswalt) and Cheese Sandwich (voiced by “Weird Al” Yankovic) will return to Equestria for the final ride, which includes the 200th episode, slated for April 20.
A new trailer for the upcoming nWay-developed videogame Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid reveals a closer look at the fighting game, which includes classic and new Rangers and will be available in solo and online/community modes. The game also will feature a Season Pass, which will comprise three new characters and a new warrior skin at launch, slated for spring on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
Cartoon Network this week launches Cartoon Network Arcade, featuring the largest library of games ever based on CN’s animated series in one app. Free to download via the App Store and Google Play, the app also features the ability to collect 60-plus digital characters sing ACR technology. The Lego Group has is launch sponsor via its Lego Ninjago and Lego City brands. As part of the program, the Lego Group will award fans with an exclusive figure to jumpstart collection building and deepen engagement. Additionally, Cartoon Network Arcade will provide opportunities for fans to participate in l immersive activities based around different shows.
APC Kids, the children’s entertainment distribution company of About Premium Content, signed Russian developer Devgame to develop six mobile games worldwide (excluding Russia, CIS, Australia and China) around its animated series Kid E-Cats. Following a launch in the CIS countries with 7 million downloads of the Kid-E-Cats: Picnic app, the new games will now roll out internationally in 16 different languages.
Mattel and MGM are developing a live-action film based on Mattel’s classic toy line View-Master toys. The collaboration is the second for the two companies, following the February 15 announcement about a film based on Mattel’s American Girl doll brand. Mattel recently updated the viewers with View-Master VR, a virtual reality product that brings what the toymaker calls “a whole new level of realism” beyond the 3-D versions. Mattel Films and MGM will co-produce the film. Robbie Brenner, Mattel head of film and Cassidy Lange, MGM co-president of production, are overseeing production.
Sitting at $490 million worldwide at press time, Disney/Marvel’s Captain Marvel was poised to sail over the $500 million mark after yesterday’s box offce was tallied.
Nick Cannon, Whoopi Goldberg, Kenan Thompson, Jennifer Coolidge and E.G. Daily are onboard as the voice cast of Pierre The Pigeon-Hawk, a music-centric animated feature from Exodus Film Group and Cannon’s Ncredible Entertainment. John D. Eraklis will direct; Cannon will oversee music. Ciaran Crampton and Chase Muratore of Sugar Water Entertainment are producing and financing the project, which centers around Pierre (Cannon), who was born from the forbidden love between a hawk and a pigeon, is rejected by both the communities and sets out on a mission to find out where he belongs.
Discovery is in a global collaboration with McDonald’s for a brand extension of Discovery’s #Mindblown in the Happy Meal program that will debut Discovery #Mindblown STEM robot toys. The partnership also includes an integration into McDonald’s McPlay and Happy Studio apps.
King Features Syndicate, a unit of Hearst, appointed M.J.A. as international licensing agent in France. King Features brands include Popeye, Betty Boop, The Phantom and Flash Gordon.
