03/03/21: The PGA TOUR unveiled a deal with Amazon Web Services

The PGA TOUR partnered with Amazon Web Services as it looks to “modernize the way golf content is created and distributed” via a slate of AWS services will be utilized to simplify content delivery, create new digital experiences, and provide enhanced access to archived broadcast footage and highlights. Deal points will see the company serve as the Official Cloud Provider of the PGA TOUR, and nearly 100 years of content will now be accessible to help the TOUR and its media partners enhance its broadcast and digital content. In addition, AWS will become a Trustee of First Tee, a youth development organization.

“Growing and diversifying our fan base is a top priority for us,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan, “and thanks to the collaboration and innovation from AWS, people will have more ways than ever to experience the game of golf, while personalizing our content to engage with the tournaments and players they support.”

PROGRAMMING

Turner Sports delivers NBA All-Star 2021 this weekend with TNT offering exclusive coverage of the game on Sunday, beginning at 5p with TNT NBA Tip-Off presented by CarMax. The Taco Bell Skills Challenge and MTN DEW 3-Point Contest will follow, starting at 6:30p, while the main event starts at 8p with play-by-play by Marv Albert alongside analysts Reggie Miller and Chris Webber and reporter Allie LaForce. AT&T Slam Dunk will take place at halftime. As a companion experience to TNT’s coverage, #NBATwitterLive will provide an isolated camera view focused on one All-Star throughout the second half, with host Taylor Rooks, commentators Channing Frye and Candace Parker, and in-arena correspondent Alexis Morgan. Meanwhile, NBA on TNT will present the NBA All-Star Draft Show presented by Nike on Thursday at 8p.

Sunday also sees NBC Sports celebrate Hockey Day in America, presented by Discover with an NHL quadrupleheader on NBC and NBCSN, as well as a collection of stories and features which will explore hockey’s impact and influence across the country. Coverage begins at noon on NBC, with the Sabres/Islanders. As the presenting sponsor of Hockey Day in America, Discover will tell “inspiring stories that highlight the progress of hockey in the United States and the personal journeys of those involved who have helped the game of hockey grow.”

Boxeo Telemundo is returning with a revamped format that will feature live match coverage coupled with fight analysis and discussions around the latest boxing and MMA news stories. Led by Telemundo Deportes’ Karim Mendiburu serving as the new studio host, the show also expands its digital footprint with the launch of a lineup of series and special content around each season, and throughout the year. The new season clocks in on Friday at midnight.

Rece Davis inked a new multi-year deal to continue as the face of ESPN’s College GameDay football and basketball studio franchises and will also continue to host coverage from events like the College Football Playoff National Championship, the NFL Draft on ABC and the NCAA Men’s Final Four, in addition to select play-by-play assignments for college football and basketball. “I’m extremely grateful to ESPN and pleased to continue working with my extraordinarily talented colleagues and friends on all of these remarkable projects,” Davis shared. “I get to cover the sports I am most passionate about with people who care deeply not only about the show, but the sports themselves. The 2021 NIT is getting trimmed down this season with the NCAA announcing that the annual college basketball postseason tournament will now feature 16 teams with all games being played in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. Conference USA and the University of North Texas will serve as hosts for the 83rd NIT, and specific venues for each round are being finalized. First-round games will be played March 17-20. Quarterfinals will run on March 25 with the semifinals and championship on March 27 & 28. 2021 also will feature a third-place game Sunday, March 28, which hasn’t been played at the NIT since 2003. All 16 games of the 2021 NIT will be televised on ESPN or ESPN2.

FITE TV announced that the National Wrestling Alliance will return on March 21 at 4p with a live Pay Per view event; relaunching the promotion since it went on hiatus due to the global pandemic, and then resuming a full schedule of NWA POWERRR events on Tuesdays at 6:05p starting March 23.

In addition, FITE TV will see world champion boxer Zab Judah host his own Celebrity Boxing PPV with the first round set for April 3 and featuring reality show stars from shows like Love & Hip Hop, Black Ink Crew Chicago, and Little Women Atlanta & Dallas, among other celebs. New fights will be presented on PPV every 90 days.

NBC Sports announced that major champion and two-time LPGA Tour winner Morgan Pressel has joined GOLF Channel and NBC as an analyst and on-course reporter for LPGA Tour and PGA TOUR coverage. She will make her 2021 on-air debut this week at the LPGA Drive On Championship presented by Volvik at Golden Ocala on GOLF Channel.

NBC Sports also unveiled its Progressive American Flat Track schedule for the 2021 season on NBCSN. The network will present coverage of all 17 races of the most historic form of American motorcycle racing, beginning with the Volusia Half-Mile I and II from Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla., on March 20, at noon.

HBO Sports, Imagine Documentaries and Fuqua Films are teaming up for the documentary The Day Sports Stood Still, telling the story of the unprecedented sports shutdown in March of 2020 and the turn of events that followed. The film debuts March 24 at 9p.

To celebrate Women’s History Month, ESPN will premiere women’s sport-centric content throughout the month across multiple platforms, powered by espnW, and anchored around a TV special, SportsCenter presents: espnW – History in the Making. The one-hour primetime special runs March 16t on ESPN at 8p and will be hosted by Lisa Salters and Jeremy Schaap. The espnW landing page will also aggregate Women’s History Month content from across the company.

FIGHTNIGHT LIVE is heading to FloSports beginning with the March 6 RDR Promotions card on FloCombat as part of a multi-event deal. The series celebrates the greatest athletes of all time through the work of sports photographer Walter Iooss, from his days as a prodigy at age 17 photographing Roger Maris’s 61st home run to his photographing every Super Bowl – this year’s 55th and counting.

PepsiCo and the NBA revealed a multiyear marketing partnership renewal, with the brand continuing as the Official Soft Drink and Official Chip of the NBA, WNBA and NBA G League. PepsiCo will leverage its MTN DEW and Ruffles brands to engage with NBA fans through year-round programming and experiences at marquee league events including NBA All-Star, which tips off on Sunday. As part of the partnership renewal roll out, Ruffles, the Official Chip of the NBA, will also air a new TV commercial as part of its Own Your Ridges campaign during Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game and teamed up with NBA All-Star Jayson Tatum, who has released a new signature chip flavor: Ruffles Flamin’ Hot BBQ.

Meanwhile, Canada Goose announced a multiyear partnership with the NBA designating Canada Goose as an Outerwear Partner of NBA All-Star. In support of the partnership and timed to the NBA’s annual All-Star celebration, Canada Goose will develop an exclusive design collaboration each year for both players and fans. This year’s design partner is Los Angeles-based brand, RHUDE.

The Pac-12 announced that Jockey will become the official apparel partner of the conference under a new multi-year partnership. As part of the new deal, Jockey will serve as an official partner of all Pac-12 championship events, beginning with this year’s Women’s and Men’s Basketball Tournaments and makes Jockey the exclusive apparel partner for the Pac-12 broadcast team and analysts.

The Pac-12 also unveiled an extension of its partnership with New York Life. With the extension, New York Life will continue as the Pac-12’s official life insurance partner and official presenting sponsor of the 2021 Pac-12 Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments in Las Vegas, as well as an official sponsor of Pac-12 Olympic championship events. New York Life will also be a presenting sponsor of the annual Pac-12 Symposium, a networking event bringing together students and recent graduates to interact with the Pac-12 and its business partners.

The National Hockey League announced NHL Fan Skills at Home Presented by GEICO, a fan-focused, Instagram and TikTok campaign. Running through April 28, the event will take over Instagram and TikTok as a social media celebration of “the most creative and talented fans in all of hockey.” “Building on the the success of our #HockeyAtHome social media campaign, we are thrilled to create NHL Fan Skills at Home Presented by GEICO to engage and entertain fans while celebrating the wide array of talent within the hockey community,” said Heidi Browning, NHL Senior Executive Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer.

Angel City Football Club, Los Angeles’ newest professional women’s soccer team set to take the field as part of the National Women’s Soccer League in Spring 2022, announced female-founded, direct-to-consumer footwear brand, Birdies as the team’s founding sleeve sponsor. The logo will be positioned on the right shoulder of the official kit, appearing on home and away jerseys, all authentic and replica first-team jerseys available to consumers, and any special edition first-team jerseys.

DIGITAL, DATA & TECH

Sling announced that NBC Regional Sports Networks will no longer be carried on the platform as of April 1, stating that “We are committed to providing the best value with the flexibility our customer’s deserve and, unfortunately, we were unable to come to an agreement on those terms.”

WynnBET signed on as a partner of the Detroit Pistons. As part of the multi-year deal, several new co-branded marketing efforts will be introduced that enhance the fan experience. Anchoring the partnership is a new initiative called Wynn Wednesdays, where every Wednesday during the Pistons regular season, the promotion will feature rotating opportunities to enter and win one of several prizes, including team and player memorabilia, tickets, and unique VIP experiences.

Simplebet announced the completion of a $15 million financing round, bringing total funding of the company to $50 million. The newly raised capital will accelerate the development of the company’s technology platform to power micro-betting and eventually, all forms of in-play betting and fan engagement for U.S. sports.

ESPORTS

Riot Games expanded its partnership with Verizon as the official 5G partner of both League of Legends Esports Global Events as well as VALORANT Esports. Verizon’s multi-year agreement as the Official 5G Partner also extends to the titles’ biggest global events including the League of Legends World Championship, which makes its return to North America in 2022; LoL Esports All-Star Event; three VALORANT Champions Tour Masters events; and VALORANT Champions. The partnership also includes the VALORANT North America Challengers. “

In addition, Riot announced that the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational, which was cancelled last year due to COVID-19, will kick off competition between the top 12 teams from the regional leagues on May 6 and culminate with the final on May 23 out of Reykjavík, Iceland. The VALORANT Champions Tour Masters Reykjavík, beginning the next day on Monday, May 24, will be the first VALORANT esports event to feature live international competition, bringing together the top 10 teams from around the world to fight for a spot at VALORANT Champions later this year.

Subnation Media announced a partnership with Green Bay Packers star wide-receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to build an esports team to compete across various titles, spearheading strategy, brand partnerships, merchandising, content programming and experiences for Trench Made Gaming. TMG will be assembled by hosting a Combine, where gamers can showcase their physical and mental skills.

Riot revealed that the LCS is partnering with Blood Centers of America (BCA) and join in the non-profit’s quest to combat COVID-19. March 5 kicks off the ‘First Blood Saves’ campaign with BCA as the league’s official First Blood partner. Throughout the month, the LCS will call upon members of the League of Legends community who have recovered from COVID-19 to donate convalescent plasma at one of BCA’s 60+ independent community blood centers in the United States.

Complexity Gaming is teaming with Dairy MAX to “optimize esports player performance and extend career longevity through proper nutrition.” The multifaceted partnership, which designates Dairy MAX as the Official Nutrition Partner of Complexity, also aims to educate the esports community on the importance of building healthy habits, explore the impact of nutrition on cognitive and physical performance, and promote overall well-being.

The North America Scholastic Esports Federation is partnering with the National Association of Collegiate Esports to provide opportunities to high school and college students through esports. The two orgs will work together on recruitment initiatives, scholarships, championship events, educating students, teachers, coaches, and families as well as initiatives and joint educational programming. “The connection between high school players and college recruiters is vital. This partnership is an important step in connecting the two,” said Michael Brooks, executive director of NACE. “Esports encompasses far more than the players themselves as colleges look for shoutcasters, team managers, audio and video engineers, marketers and more. The partnership between NACE and NASEF will also help students identify educational opportunities to prepare them for their careers of choice in the esports industry, which Newzoo predicts will hit $1.8 billion by 2022. We’re helping students prepare to participate in that enormous and growing market.”
