Fresh off his Oscar win for Best Actor, Eddie Redmayne’s next journey takes him to the Island of Sodor. Redmayne will voice an engine in HIT Entertainment’s upcoming direct to DVD Thomas & Friends movie Sodor’s Legend of the Lost Treasure, an adventure that takes the engines to a new part of the island. Redmayne voices Ryan (a task we expect is a bit less challenging than his transformation into Stephen Hawking for The Theory of Everything), while John Hurt (Harry Potter, Tinker, Tailor Soldier, Spy) will assume the part of Sailor John and Jamie Campbell Bower (Harry Potter, Twilight, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street) will voice sailboat Skiff. The DVD will be released this fall. “I grew up loving to watch Thomas and his pals getting caught up in unexpected and mischievous adventures,” Redmayne says. “I jumped at the opportunity to get involved. I had never voiced an animated character before, and I had a complete blast.”


Nickelodeon to Launch a Mobile Subscription Service for Preschoolers.

The mobile subscription service brings back a name parents know and trust: NOGGIN. Launching March 5th, NOGGIN will feature age-appropriate, parent-approved episodes and a library of preschool music videos and educational, short-form content hosted by the beloved Moose and Zee.


Here’s something to chew on: Monday’s finale of Kids Baking Championship on Food Network ranked No. 3 in cable in its timeslot with a .7 A25-54 (720,000 impressions), making it the net’s highest-rated ever Monday 8p hour. By midway through its run, the series was the No. 1 co-viewing program in its time period within top 20 cable networks, with nearly 30 percent of the A25-54 audience sharing the experience with their children.

One of the early family viewing TV events, The Ten Commandments will return to the air as an “ABC Special Presentation” on Sunday, April 5, 7-11:44p. The legendary 1956 Cecil B. DeMille film starring Charlton Heston in the role of Moses and Yul Brynner as Rameses, was an annual Passover/Easter television tradition for years. Turns out the lion’s share of Cartoon Network Upfront meetings this year are taking place in the 9,600-square-foot Time Warner Media Lab in NY. The lab incorporates technologies and research techniques, providing the ability to test consumer engagement throughout the media-to-retail experience. “Most of our discussions are taking place in the Lab itself. We are inviting them to the Media Lab for the initial Upfront conversations, and we’ve had a great response from advertisers here in the New York area and across the country,” Joe Hogan, EVP, Turner emerging consumer ad sales, tells CynKids. “It’s about us working together with partners to get better metrics against multiplatform metrics. We have the opportunity and challenge to do some customer research for our partners, and we are becoming a bigger part of the Media Lab.”


Nickelodeon Dives Deeper into the World of Sports.

Leagues like the NFL, NASCAR and MLS are tapping into an incredible opportunity to engage with their youngest fans through NickSports. Nickelodeon is connecting to our audience’s deeply-held passion for sports with a programming block on NickToons, branded activations at stadiums across the country and the successful launch of the first annual Kids’ Choice Sports hosted by Michael Strahan.


Nickelodeon is in development on an animated shorts program based on its hit Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles property. The program is being helmed by the Turtles’ original co-creator Kevin Eastman and the action will focus on the ability of the fab four to appear as humans. The network is also in production on a TMNT TV special, and has greenlit a sixth season with season 5 still in production.


Hispanic families use some digital tools at rates that rival their middle class white peers, but have fewer opportunities to tap into educational content that could advance children’s early growth and long-term achievement. This according to new findings released by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop. The results of a new national survey, reported in Aprendiendo en casa: Media as a Resource for Learning Among Hispanic-Latino Families, indicate there are significant gaps in access to computing devices and hi-speed Internet for children raised in English-only, bilingual and Spanish-speaking families. Families that speak primarily Spanish and which had the lowest incomes were least likely to have home Internet access or own computers, tablets, and e-readers. They were also least likely to say that their children access educational content through these technologies.


Nick will launch the first toy line for its STEM-based preschool series Blaze and the Monster Machines in May with an exclusive bow at Toys R Us, before wide release this fall.


The Kids’ Choice Awards Resonate with Nickelodeon’s Audience.

The Kids’ Choice Awards continue to be a pop culture mainstay, drawing 5.8 million total viewers to last year’s live premiere.


Turner Broadcasting is launching Toonami, the company’s superhero-centric channel, in India. Toonami already has a significant presence in Asia Pacific in 14 countries including Singapore, Philippines and Hong Kong. In India, the net is being distributed by Taj Television and is available on the country’s leading digital cable platforms across Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bangalore.
