CYNOPSISDIGITAL
02.27.14

Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 27, 2014, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

The Walt Disney Company will spend more than $200 million over the next three years filming four series based on the Marvel heroes for Netflix. The deal (first announced last fall) marks the largest TV and film production venture in New York’s history; The 60 one-hour episodes will debut in 2015 on Netflix.

American Idol is teaming up with Google to let fans vote by googling "American Idol" or "Idol" on desktop or mobile devices; viewers can choose multiple finalists as many as 50 times. Other reality shows like The Voice and the X Factor have toyed with different voting methods, too, including using iTunes sales or counting Twitter direct messages, according to Mashable.

Microsoft may be planning to partner with online video company Dailymotion, according to Reuters. The deal would still give Dailymotion’s owner, French telecom provider Orange, a stake in the company. Dailymotion reaches more than 230 million monthly unique global visitors.

CONTENT MEDIA

SundanceTV launched a short form animated series as a companion to The Red Road (premiering tonight at 9p) to help viewers understand exactly what enigmatic episode titles like "The Woman Who Fell from the Sky" really mean. "The Red Road: So it Begins" will roll out weekly on Sundance.TV and Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, alongside each linear episode.

BBC America drama series Ripper Street will return for a third season, and Amazon has acquired the UK subscription streaming rights. The show, which includes Game of Thrones Jerome Flynn and Downton Abbey‘s MyAnna Buring, focuses on the London police precinct that keeps order in the roughest parts of the city. The eight-part second season premiered in the U.S. on Feb. 22.

The future of digital currency Bitcoin is being debated today after it stopped trading in the world’s biggest Bitcoin exchange, Mt.Gox, earlier this week. CEO Mark Karpeles resigned from the board of directors at the Bitcoin Foundation after more than 744,000 of the 12.4 million minted bitcoins (each worth $517) were lost, according to Reuters. Yesterday, Karpeles wrote on the Mt. Gox site, "I would like to use this opportunity to reassure everyone that I am… working very hard with the support of different parties to find a solution our recent issues."

Who will harness the Twitterverse Sunday night? Marketers are strategizing ways to generate positive Twitter buzz during the Oscars, according to AdWeek. "Planned spontaneity is the order of the day," Jordan Bitterman, chief strategy officer at Mindshare, told the mag. Show airs live on ABC.

Facebook now allows pages to tag other pages, which will make a posted message quickly reach a wider audience. The new feature will benefit brands by giving them a bigger opportunity to pull in new fans, but they can only tag brands where there is a "natural overlap" of values and messages, according to TIME.

MIPTV has named Chipotle Mexican Grill the Brand of the Year, recognizing its original online branded series Farmed and Dangerous. The series, which just released its second episode on Hulu, will make its international debut at the festival in Cannes on April 9.

ComScore and market research company Ipsos are fusing Ipsos’ Affuluent Survey with comScore’s Media Metrix data to help marketers understand Affluents’ online behavior ($100,000 and more American households). DIGITAL SPOTLIGHT OF THE DAY

YouTube’s Epic Meal Time is jumping to the TV screen with the launch of the FYI Network (owned by A+E and formerly known as Bio) on July 7. The show, produced by Collective Digital Studio and Harley Morenstein’s Nexttime Productions, will feature the two leads inventing new dishes in 16 half-hour episodes. Although the YT duo previously created a series for NBCUniversal’s G4, FYI insists this one will be different. EMT will continue creating shows for YT, not to worry. Check out the most recent episode at www.cynopsis.com.
