02.20.14 Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 20, 2014, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
With the US and Canada squaring off in both men’s and women’s hockey, NBC Olympics reports that Wednesday’s authenticated live stream of the men’s ice hockey quarterfinal game between the US and the Czech Republic drew nearly 800,000 unique users (798,337) on NBC Sports Live Extra. That ranks at the top for any Olympics event in the platform’s history and trails only the non-authenticated Super Bowl XLVI for NBC Sports Group’s most-streamed sports event of all time. In addition, 24.1 million minutes of the game were streamed.
NBC Olympics and the USOC laid out plans for the upcoming Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games with 52 hours of coverage slated across NBC and NBCSN. Programming includes 27 hours of live action, beginning with the Opening Ceremony on Friday, March 7 at 11a on NBCSN. TeamUSA.org will also live stream all events from the Paralympic Winter Games. Coverage will include all five Paralympic winter sports alpine skiing (which includes snowboarding), cross-country skiing, biathlon, wheelchair curling and sled hockey spanning 11 days. Sponsors include BMW, BP, Citi, Liberty Mutual Insurance, Procter & Gamble and The Hartford.
Meanwhile, exactly 20 years to the day after the 1994 Olympic Winter Games, Mary Carillo hosts the one-hour Nancy & Tonya, reviewing the events leading up to, during and following the infamous ladies’ figure skating competition. The documentary will run on Sunday at 7p and offer a sit-down with Nancy Kerrigan and a one-on-one interview with Tonya Harding.
ESPN’s coverage of the 2014 Sprint NBA All-Star Celebrity Game on Friday ranks as the most-watched ever, according to Nielsen. The telecast drew 2,451,000 viewers this year, up 8% from year-ago numbers. The Celebrity Game generated a 1.5 U.S. household rating, which is tied for the game’s best rating ever and logged a total of 1.1 million minutes on WatchESPN, up 53%.
The FA Cup 5th Round match pitting Arsenal and Liverpool on Sunday handed FOX Sports 2 with a viewership record. The game delivered 257,000 viewers according to Nielsen, making it the most-watched program on the channel since its launch on August 17, 2013.
ONE World Sports entered an agreement to showcase Kontinental Hockey League games. Coverage launches with four regular-season games in February, immediately following the Olympic Winter Games, and continues in April with live or same-day coverage of the league’s two conference finals and championship series.
Golf Channel is already teeing up for the 2016 Summer Games, which will feature the return of golf to the mix of events. Starting Monday, Golf Channel will begin celebrating golf’s road to Rio with dedicated Olympic-themed coverage on air, online and via its social media channels. Coverage begins with the launch of season two of In Play with Jimmy Roberts, which this year expands to an hour, at 10p and features an exclusive look at the preparation of the Olympic golf course in Rio through multiple interviews with the course’s designer, Gil Hanse. In addition, GolfChannel.com will post the projected Olympic field and launch a dedicated section to Olympic golf coverage.
CBS Sports Network announced that the channel will carry seven SEC college baseball games this season. The contests begin on Saturday, March 29 with LSU/Florida and wrap up with South Carolina/Vanderbilt on May 17.
HRTV begins its Triple Crown coverage on Saturday with live on-site coverage of the Grade 2, $400,000 Risen Star from the Fair Grounds, and continues with its meet-long presence at Gulfstream Park for the Grade 2, $400,000 Fountain of Youth, another key Kentucky Derby prep. HRTV’s on-site talent at both tracks will offer viewers new for each card as well as analysis and interviews.
