PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Wilshire Studios, the unscripted production arm of NBCU Cable Entertainment, and BuzzFeed News are developing an active crime investigation docu-series based on the mysterious death of Jessica Chambers, the Mississippi teen who was doused with gasoline and set on fire in December of 2014. The series is inspired by the investigative reporting of BuzzFeed News’ senior national reporter Katie J.M. Baker, who reported Chambers’ story, which remains unsolved. Joe Berlinger (Brother’s Keeper and the Paradise Lost trilogy) is set to executive produce.

The Jackal Group acquired TV rights to Ann Margaret Carrozza‘s upcoming book Love & Money: Protecting Yourself from Angry Exes, Wacky Relatives, Con Artists and Inner Demons. The company will adapt it into an unscripted series, with Carrozza as producer and host.

Fox 21 TV Studios and FX Productions recently optioned rights to Jeffrey Toobin’s book A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down A President to develop. Season 2 will focus on Hurricane Katrina; season 3 explores the July 1997 assassination of designer Gianni Versace.

ID signed prosecutor Anna-Sigga Nicolazzi to its new series True Conviction, which has begun production and slated to debut in Q4. DIGITAL DOINGS

YouTube cut ties with Internet personality PewDiePie (aka Felix Kjellberg), a day after Disney’s Maker Studios severed ties with him when anti-Semitic jokes surfaced in videos posted on his YT channel. YT canceled the release of the second season of Scare PewDiePie, and is removing the PewDiePie channel from Google Preferred.

Building off of last year’s partnership, Comcast, ABC and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will again join to create an immersive Oscars television viewing experience for Xfinity X1 customers. This year’s collaboration will yield more than 1,500 hours of content, as well as live streams of backstage activity and the red carpet, interactive voice commands and enhanced extras. In 2016, X1 customers had access to a similar collection of content and the 88th Oscars telecast saw a 39 percent ratings lift in Comcast households over non-Comcast households.

In related news, Comcast announced plans to launch Xfinity Stream, an app available to all Xfinity TV customers at no additional cost on devices in and out of the home. The app, which can be downloaded by Xfinity TV customers without charge, will allow users to watch their entire TV lineup on phones, tablets and laptops in the home, and when they’re on-the-go, to tune-in to more than 200 live channels, access and program their DVR and watch 40,000 on demand titles.

GOING GLOBAL

Discovery is cutting Hollywood content from its offerings in Northern Europe. CEO David Zaslav delivered the news as part of the company’s earnings report yesterday, noting growing competition from Netflix and HBO in the area led to the decision to get “out of the business of that entertainment stuff” in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. Discovery took a $20 million impairment charge during Q4 tied to some of the content it offered in Northern Europe.

CBC will launch docu-series Keeping Canada Safe with back-to-back episodes on Thursday, March 16 at 9p. Filmed over a single 48-hour period, the series provides a behind-the-scenes look at the people and emergency services tasked with protecting Canadians.
