The NBA Development League moniker is coming to an end. Instead, the organization will now be known as the NBA Gatorade League (NBA G-League) as part of a multiyear expanded partnership announced today by the NBA and Gatorade, marking the first time a US professional sports league has named an entitlement partner. New NBA G-League logo that will be featured across all game balls, team jerseys, on-court signage, and league digital assets. Through the Gatorade Sports Science Institute, the partnership will also see programs to enhance player sports performance and recovery.
“As one of the most iconic brands in the world and a founding partner of the NBA Development League, Gatorade is an ideal fit for this first-of-its-kind partnership,” said Mark Tatum, NBA Deputy Commissioner and COO. “The NBA D-League has prepared hundreds of players for the NBA and Gatorade has always been focused on fueling players to perform at the highest level. We look forward to collaborating with the renowned GSSI team to enhance player development and our game.”
NBC Olympics locked in a deal with SportsEngine and United World Wrestling for a media rights agreement spanning 24 UWW events annually through 2020. The deal includes exclusive and extensive digital rights to events, which will be live streamed by Trackwrestling, a division of SportsEngine, across desktops, mobile devices, tablets and connected TVs. NBC Sports will also present coverage of major events, including the annual World Championships, on NBCSN. Coverage begins this week with the World Cup live from Iran as Trackwrestling streams over 20 hours of coverage beginning tomorrow at 1a. The agreement also includes exclusive television and streaming rights to the World Championships, Freestyle World Cup, Women’s World Cup, and Greco-Roman World Cup through 2020.
UConn’s milestone 100th-consecutive victory on Monday delivered a 0.9 overnight rating to ESPN2, marking the highest-rated college basketball game on ESPN2 this season among both men’s and women’s telecasts, and the highest-rated women’s college basketball regular season game since 2010. Online, the game drew 69,000 unique viewers with a total of 1,700,000 minutes watched, which makes this matchup the most streamed women’s college basketball regular-season game to date televised by ESPN.
NBA Digital detailed its plans for NBA All-Star, featuring content across NBA TV, the NBA App, NBA.com and social media with NBA TV programming set to include an hour-long Kevin Garnett: All-Star Interview special on Feb. 20, at 9p with Kevin McHale. The network will then carry Open Court: NBA Next Generation, a roundtable discussion hosted by Matt Winer with Joel Embiid, Karl-Anthony Towns, Devin Booker and D’Angelo Russell. Meanwhile, the network’s live coverage highlights from New Orleans include for the first time ever five hours of complete coverage from NBA All-Star Media Day on Feb. 17 at noon along with continuous coverage of the NBA All-Star Eastern and Western Conference practices on Feb. 18 at noon. Meanwhile, The Starters will host two hour-long episodes on Friday at 6p and Sunday at 4p. NBA TV’s on-site coverage in New Orleans will begin with a half-hour 10 Before Tip show on Thursday at 6p.
Former ESPN tennis announcer Doug Adler is reportedly suing his former employer for wrongful termination after he was let go after grabbing headlines for describing Venus Williams’ strategy for charging the net as “the guerrilla effect.” He was removed from the broadcast booth despite maintaining that his words were misinterpreted and meant “guerrilla” instead of “gorilla.”
In ratings news, the latest Premier Boxing Champions The Next Round on Bounce that ran on Friday scored series records of 501K Persons ( up 73% vs. the prior PBC The Next Round event), 285K Men 2+ (+47%), 120K Persons 18-34 (+264%) and 201K P18-49 (+95%). Bounce aired an immediate encore of Premier Boxing Champions The Next Round after the live event and the two telecasts combined reached 1.5 million viewers.
Elsewhere in boxing, FIGHT SPORTS locked in international rights to both Saturday’s Adrien Broner/Adrian Granados broadcast as well as the Deontay Wilder/Gerald Washington championship battle on Feb. 25. FIGHT SPORTS will broadcast both events Live in over forty countries, including Germany, Spain, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand and throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.

FOX Sports put its Daytona Day strategy on full display, detailing its promotional plans leading into the staple NASCAR race. marketing will include: activations with consumer marketing partners including Pizza Hut, Smithfield, Toyota and Uber/UberEATS; a promotional partnership with Comcast, title sponsor of the NASCAR XFINITY Series; a major Daytona Day anthem spot — one of seven separate promotional spots running in support of the Daytona 500 on FOX — directed by Joseph Kahn; chef Gordon Ramsay developing a Daytona Day menu; a Daytona Day Pick 5 Sweepstakes housed on FOXSports.com; as well as 250 Daytona 500 viewing parties, including several hosted by NASCAR tracks around the country, all supplied with Daytona Day party kits. “We learned a lot in year one,” said Robert Gottlieb, FOX Sports EVP of Marketing. “But the one thing that rose above all others was the need for DAYTONA DAY to be an industry initiative and not just a FOX Sports marketing play. The Big 12 Conference locked in a partnership with FloSports to deliver live and on-demand coverage of the Big 12 Championships for Swimming & Diving on FloSwimming.com, Indoor Track & Field on FloTrack.com, Wrestling on FloWrestling.com, and Gymnastics on FloGymnastics.com. NBA Digital, in partnership with Turner Sports, and NextVR will offer basketball fans in the US free video-on-demand highlights in virtual reality of the 2017 State Farm All-Star Saturday Night and NBA All-Star Game 2017. The experiences will be available in the All-Star Weekend channel in the NextVR app following the conclusion of TNT’s television coverage each night. Highlights from Saturday will include three signature events: Taco Bell Skills Challenge, JBL Three-Point Contest and Verizon Slam Dunk.
Newzoo announced the release of its 2017 Global Esports Market Report, projecting that the esports economy will grow to $696 million in 2017 for year-on-year growth of 41.3%. Brands are expected to spend $517 million, broken down into $155 million on advertising, $266 million on sponsorship, and a further $95 million on media rights. Meanwhile, the global esports audience will reach 385 million in 2017, consisting of 191 million Esports Enthusiasts and a further 194 million Occasional Viewers. North America ranks as the largest esports market, with revenues of $257 million in 2017 and projected to double to reach $607 million by 2020.
Italian Serie A football team AS Roma is getting in on the esports action, announcing plans to join competitive gaming for FIFA by signing Aman Seddiqi, Sam Carmody and Nicolo Mirra to represent the team at tournaments and event. The club will now compete in tournaments against major Europe sides including Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City, Ajax, Valencia, Sporting Clube de Portugal and Galatasaray. To drive success, Roma partnered with Fnatic to power the club’s eSports division and offer support for training, events and provide all eSports-related logistical knowledge to nurture the club’s players.
Nazara Games is investing $20 million to launch a new esports league in India that will feature games such as Dota 2 and CS:GO. Nazara said it will invest the funds over the next five years in the league, which will be a subsidiary of Nazara Technologies.
