CBS Corporation acquired an ownership stake in prolific production company Kapital Entertainment, founded and led by Aaron Kaplan. CBS will provide co-financing for Kapital to invest in its future programming and serve as its worldwide distributor. Kapital will continue to operate as an independent production company, able to sell to other buyers in the TV marketplace, and Kaplan will remain at Kapital Entertainment as its chief executive officer. “CBS is a content company, and this new venture immediately establishes another source to create more programming assets for our distribution pipeline,” said Les Moonves, chairman and CEO, CBS Corporation.“Aaron is a talented and creative producer, a skilled program packager and a very smart businessperson. We’re excited to build this partnership together.”
CBS This Morning shared good news on Friday. In a medical update on co-host Charlie Rose, who underwent heart surgery the day prior, the show said: “We’re happy to report that @Charlie’s Rose’s surgery to replace a heart valve went very well. He’s resting & says he’s excited to return soon!” Rose expects to be back in March.
Josh Elliott is leaving his daytime anchor spot at streaming news service CBSN, though he’ll remain at CBS, taking field assignments and reporting across CBS News programs, including CBSN. Making the announcement on air Friday, Elliott said, “knowing how things work around here, I may see you again on Monday morning.” Elliott, who joined CBSN in March 2016 from NBC, took the audience into the control room for his last day “to thank everyone here, who you don’t get a chance to see. The real people who do the real work….I’m just the guy who gets my face spackled and somehow puts verbs after subjects before objects, we hope.”
Sinclair Broadcast Group and Frontier Communications reached a deal that ended a blackout of the Tennis Channel and Sinclair’s ABC stations in Seattle, Washington and Portland, OR. The retrans dust-up started in December, after Frontier inherited customers from its deal with Verizon.
VH1 and MTV2 might not have made the cut as one of the 6 core channels in Viacom’s new strategic vision, as outlined last week by CEO Bob Bakish (those would be BET, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr. and Spike-rebranding-to-Paramount), but there’s still a place for them, said MTV, VH1 and Logo president Chris McCarthy. VH1 is “incredibly strong and doing great,” McCarthy told the Hollywood Reporter, adding that MTV2 is a great place to “incubate talent,” and while Logo does not have the distribution he’d like, it has a sizeable audience share. Bakish had said the core network was not “a light switching off a whole bunch of networks,” but a focus on the strongest.
At least NBC should be happy: On Friday, the day before Alec Baldwin’s record 17th turn as host of NBC’s Saturday Night Live, Dominican newspaper El Nacional accidentally published a photo of Baldwin impersonating President Donald Trump on SNL in place of the real thing, accompanying a story about Trump and Israeli settlements. The paper tweeted an apology on Saturday, explaining, “Actor Baldwin imitates President Trump on the Saturday Night Live weekly show on the National Broadcasting Company (NBC), one of the most important in the United States.”
