Good morning. It’s Friday February 13, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
FIFA turned heads yesterday with its announcement that it had extended its media rights agreements in the United States and Canada for its events leading up to and including the 2026 World Cup. Extending their partnerships with FOX for English language programming and NBCUniversal’s Telemundo for Spanish language, the deal also locks in CTV/TSN in Canada. Overall, new events in the deals include: FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023, FIFA U-20 World Cup 2023 and 2025, FIFA U-17 World Cup 2023 and 2025, FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2023 and 2025, FIFA Futsal World Cup 2024, FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2024 and 2026, FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2024 and 2026, and FIFA Confederations Cup 2025.
“These agreements guarantee wide distribution for FIFA tournaments across the US and Canada. Together, we will be able to further promote football in North America and build on the impressive interest shown by audiences in these major territories during the 2014 FIFA World Cup,” said FIFA Director of TV Niclas Ericson.
ESPN is launching a new college basketball awards show that will run on ESPN2 on April 10 at 8p. The one-hour program will take place in LA and deliver the exclusive announcement of eight awards, including the famed Wooden Award. In coordination with the Los Angeles Athletic Club and Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, the first-ever College Basketball Awards Presented by Wendy’s program will honor the the men’s and women’s player of the year, as well as San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher with the 2015 Wooden Legends of Coaching Award, Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award, Julius Erving Small Forward of the Year Award, Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year Award. ESPN’s Rece Davis will host the program.
Spike TV made it official, locking in NFL RedZone host Scott Hanson as the channel’s blow-by-blow announcer for its upcoming Premier Boxing Champions series. The network’s first edition of the program takesplace on march 13 at 9p, featuring Andre Berto/Josesito Lopez and Shawn Porter/Robert Garcia. "We are thrilled to welcome Scott Hansen to our inaugural PBC Boxing announce team. He is an emerging sports broadcasting talent who will bring his signature energy and passion to our cutting-edge boxing coverage," said Jon Slusser, Senior Vice President, Sports and Branded Entertainment, Spike TV.
Speaking of boxing, NBC Sports unveiled its slate for the first two forays of Premier Boxing Champions series on NBC and NBCSN. First up will be Abner Mares/Arturo Santos Reyes on Saturday, March 7 live from Las Vegas as part of the card that also features Keith Thurman/Robert Guerrero and Adrien Broner/John Molina, Jr. on NBC at 8:30p. The Mares/Reyes bout will be televised live on the NBC show or on the NBCSN telecast at 11p. Meanwhile, the April 11 event on the channels will see Danny “Swift” Garcia/Lamont Peterson as well as “Irish” Andy Lee/Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin in a 12-round world title fight.
Rentrak locked in a TV ratings contract with Tennis Channel that will see the network use Rentrak’s TV measurement to plan, price and post its advertising sales campaigns. "Rentrak’s Advanced Demographic ratings allow Tennis Channel to provide clients with precise measurements of the audience quality our programming delivers," said Tennis Channel’s Senior Vice President of Research, Steve Badeau. "We’ve seen significant viewer growth year-over-year-not just during the sport’s largest tournaments, but throughout the annual season, including post-U.S. Open, fourth-quarter events traditionally overlooked by television. We look forward to using Rentrak’s research and advanced intelligence to share this demand with the media-buying community."

ESPN2 and ESPNU revealed plans for its annual Play 4Kay initiative, offering five women’s college basketball games on Sunday, Feb. 22. Eight teams ranked in the Associated Press weekly poll will participate in this year’s Play 4Kay games: No. 1 South Carolina; No. 4 Notre Dame; No. 6 Tennessee; No. 9 Louisville; No. 11 Duke; No. 18 Rutgers, No. 19 Stanford and No. 25 USF, beginning with Duke/NC State at noon. Digital initiatives will include Social Tiles that showcase some of the late Coach Yow’s best sayings (aka Yow-isms) in an effort to encourage social media engagement and conversation surrounding Play4Kay.
BTN gears up for it eighth consecutive year televising the Big Ten Championships, including wrestling, men’s and women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s indoor track & field and men’s and women’s gymnastics. Coverage begins at 9a on Feb. 22 with the Big Ten Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships from Ohio State.
While Las Vegas got good news with the reports that the potential NHL ownership group had already locked in half of its 10,000 season ticket goal in a day, the city also received the not-so-positive word that Major League Soccer would not be offering Vegas a franchise.

Under Armour is turning to the NBA’s Stephen Curry and actor Jamie Foxx for the brand’s biggest ever global brand campaign, entitled The Book of Will. Foxx serves as the star and Creative Director of the new short films with the first film from the campaign detailing the story of Curry’s journey in "Volume One: Shakespeare Got it All Wrong." The film will air on February 15 during the 2015 NBA All-Star Game telecast on TNT while the second film in the series, "Volume Two: Aristotle Got it All Wrong," run on broadcast starting February 17 on the NFL Network and ESPN.
CBS CEO Leslie Moonves told reporters yesterday that the network was eyeballing a price tag between $5 million-$6 million for a 30-second spot in next year’s Super Bowl. The media company stated that CBS’ advertising revenue spiked 4% from a slate of Thursday night NFL games during the 2014 season, despite, as Moonves noted, last year’s crop of games not being barnburners, according to reports.
Cartoon Network is getting in the game with its first-ever NBA All-Star Jam Marathon, as part of the build-up to this weekend’s game. In partnership with the NBA and in concert with Turner Broadcasting’s exclusive coverage, the channel will feature special segments integrated into some of its shows and across its digital platforms on Saturday, Feb. 14, and Sunday, Feb. 15. In addition, through its popular CN Sayin’ App, Cartoon Network will hand kids an opportunity to send questions via video submissions to their favorite NBA All-Stars and showcase the top moments from this year’s NBA All-Star Mascot Slam Dunk Contest with highlights airing during the special programming blocks on the network.
Jason Whitlock’s new ESPN platform focusing on sports, race and culture will be dubbed TheUndefeated.com. The site will launch later this year, offering “commentary, long-form storytelling and insight on race and urban culture through the prism of sports.” The name, The Undefeated, is inspired by a passage from American poet, author and civil rights leader Maya Angelou:
Meanwhile, ESPN also announced that fans will have a more personalized experience with the new ESPN App, marking a change from the SportsCenter App that’s available on the App Store. The release marks a shift toward “unifying those experiences through a single brand, a common aesthetic and consistent interface.”.
USA TODAY Sports Media Group launched a trending sports mobile application designed to deliver fans with buzzworthy news and track the most significant stories and live events. The new app launched yesterday with features that include the “Best. Scoreboard. Ever,” a dynamic feature offering a ranked list of “the live events worth watching, why they can’t be missed, and where they can be seen” as well as shared content.
WWE cemented in-roads for WWE Network in Canada and the Middle East. The company inked a deal with Canada’s Rogers for carriage of WWE Network with multiple television providers. In addition to Rogers and Eastlink, the premium linear TV channel will now also be available to Cogeco Cable Canada, Shaw and Shaw Direct, TELUS Optik TV and TELUS Satellite TV, and Videotron subscribers. SendtoNews saw 4.7 million video views during the Super Bowl XLIX weekend through its News Partnership Network. That company reports that the game set a new record for digital impressions in Canada while video views totaled 15.7 million spanning Jan.26 to Feb. 8 with the Monday after Super Bowl attracting the largest audience, with 1.7 million views on that day alone. That marks 83 % growth in viewership over 2014.
Digital consulting firm Omnigon is once again teaming up with the Westminster Kennel Club to design the app for the 139th Annual Westminster Dog Show, set to take place February 16 and 17. According to the company, the app will include: Westminster 101, sharing the event’s rich history and proving a glossary of dog show terms; photos and descriptions of all 192 breeds and varieties; venue and vendor maps; and real time video feeds and results. The app will also include The Masters Agility Championship at Westminster.
