The Daily Show’s Jon Stewart is leaving Comedy Central when his contract expires this year, a move confirmed by the network. “For the better part of the last two decades, I have had the incredible honor and privilege of working with Jon Stewart,” said Comedy president Michele Ganeless. “His comedic brilliance is second to none…. Jon will remain at the helm of The Daily Show until later this year. He is a comic genius, generous with his time and talent, and will always be a part of the Comedy Central family.”
NBC News is suspending Brian Williams from NBC Nightly News, where he is Chief Anchor and Managing Editor, for six months without pay as a result of misleading statements Williams made about covering the Iraq War in 2003. Lester Holt will continue as substitute anchor. “We believe this suspension is the appropriate and proportionate action,” said NBC News President Deborah Turness in a memo.
Funny Or Die’s Billy on the Street got a season four renewal, but will hop from Fuse to truTV for its next 10 eps. TruTV also acquired rights to the first three seasons of the show, in a deal that gives Billy Eichner pilot commitments at truTV and Turner sib Adult Swim and specials on truTV and TBS. “Billy is a singular talent who exemplifies the qualities we are looking for in truTV’s new programming, including a unique voice and vision,” said Chris Linn, president, head of programming for truTV.
A new Harris Poll asking U.S. viewers about their favorite shows, using methodology “independent and distinct” from owner Nielsen’s, confirms the measurement company’s ratings results – pretty much. CBS’s highly-rated NCIS handily landed in the top spot on the list of favorite current shows, followed by the net’s The Big Bang Theory and AMC ratings juggernaut The Walking Dead, then ABC hit Scandal. But HBO’s Game of Thrones, available in one third of the country, was surprise number five.
It appears new Discovery Channel president Rich Ross, who at TCA last month said his ideal show is one that “makes people care and do something about it,” is a man of his word. The net acquired the domestic and international distribution rights to broadcast documentary Racing to Extinction to a global audience after its world premiere at The 2015 Sundance Film Festival. “We hope that by harnessing the power of Discovery with its worldwide television premiere we can ignite global awareness and provoke a movement to save so many endangered species from extinction,” said Ross.
IFC renewed Portlandia for seasons six and seven. “Portland may be a place where young people go to retire, but IFC is not retiring Portlandia,” said Jennifer Caserta, IFC president. “And if you order a book from Toni and Candace at the Feminist Bookstore right now, it might even arrive by the time season seven rolls around.” Round five of the quirky comedy is airs Thursdays at 10p.
E! has combined its news and digital divisions, with EVP John Najarian overseeing both operations. "Creating an integrated organization is an important step as we evolve the network’s linear news strategy and multi-screen approach,” said Najarian. “We are positioning the network to better serve entertainment and pop culture fans with an authentic, relevant, consistent voice throughout our news platforms.”
While execs at NBCUniversal discuss the fate of NBC News anchor Brian Williams, social media and media pundits are having their fun. But some, like Fox News host Bill O’Reilly – who called the Internet “a sewer” – are just as harsh on Williams’ critics. Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart said Monday night, “Never again will Brian Williams mislead a nation about being shot in a war we probably wouldn’t have ended up in if we had applied this level of scrutiny to the actual [expletive] war.” Have Williams’ critics gone too far? Weigh in a new Cynopsis poll.
HBO renewed Getting On for a six-ep third and final season. Hospital comedy has averaged a gross audience of 1.6 million viewers.
Nickelodeon launched a campaign Tuesday for Black History Month that includes 30-second PSAs featuring kids portraying distinguished African-Americans. Produced by Because of Them We Can, which aims to build self-esteem in children, the spots will air throughout February, and be showcased on a dedicated web site (http://www.nick.com/thanks).

One-hour show from LeBron James’ Springhill Production Company in association with Turner Sports and IMG will feature NBA stars and supermodels in a runway competition. In addition to Samsung Galaxy, Kia Motors and Ciroc Ultra Premium Vodka will be integrated into the show. What’s the appeal to brands? “The social media engagement generated by an event like this, before, during and after the telecast on TNT is massive,” Will Funk, SVP of sponsorship integration and business development for Turner Sports ad sales, tells Cynopsis. “The value for the sponsors begins with the organic integration within a high-profile event during sports’ (NBA All-Star) and fashion’s (Fashion Week) biggest weekend, and the ability to amplify these integrations across social media is invaluable. This is the beginning of a larger initiative across Turner Sports to capitalize on our unique position with premiere championship sports which are consumed live and allow for our advertising partner messages to be heard in real time across our TV, online, mobile and social channels.”
