02/10/16: Viacom and Snapchat expand on partnership; Twitter launches new ‘First View’ video ad feature; Google to ban Flash ads

Good morning. It’s Wednesday February 10, 2016, and this is your first early morning digital briefing.

TOP NEWS

You know you’re a hot ticket when corporate behemoths start cutting major deals with you – and Snapchat is getting big-time attention from Viacom. The companies have struck a multi-year deal that will allow Viacom to sell advertising for Snapchat, and bundle that advertising into packages with television clients. Meanwhile, two major Viacom networks are getting exposure on Snapchat’s Discover platform: Viacom is launching both a Comedy Central International channel and an MTV channel for the U.S. (A U.S.-based Comedy Central channel and an MTV International channel already existed).

ADVERTISING

Flash
, we hardly knew ye. Google announced that it will be banning Flash ads from its advertising network. Come June 30 of this year, advertisers will no longer be allowed to upload display ads to the Google Display Network using Flash. And on January 2 of next year, Google will stop displaying Flash ads altogether. Instead, Google is telling all advertisers to use HTML5, which is less prone to malware.

Wondering why the trailer for Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates occupied the top spot in your Twitter timeline for an entire day? It’s because 20th Century Fox paid Twitter to make it happen. Twitter has begun rolling out First View, a new ad unit that gives marketers exclusive access to the top spot in users’ timelines for a full 24 hours. The feature is currently available only in the U.S., but Twitter intends to bring it to more countries in the coming months.

PLATFORMS + TECH

More news from Twitter: The social network announced the formation of the Twitter Trust & Safety Council, a new initiative designed to crack down on hate speech and bullying.

Soon, you may get the chance to give your thumb a rest. MacRumors reports that the third beta version of the Apple TV’s tvOS 9.2 operating system – just launched for third-party developers – expands on the device’s voice dictation capabilities. Using the fourth generation Apple TV’s Siri-integrated remote, users can now speak words instead of typing them, significantly mitigating the difficulty of, say, entering a username or password. Voice search was already available in some areas (including Netflix and Hulu searches), but the new updates mark a significant expansion of the Apple TV’s voice dictation functions.

BitTorrent, Inc.
found its journalistic side, just in time for Election Day. The P2P developer launched OTT News, a new streaming app for the Apple TV. The app featured live video coverage of the New Hampshire presidential primary. (BitTorrent hired a team of journalists just for the occasion.) Notably, the app used peer-to-peer technology, as opposed to a content delivery network, to live-stream to consumers. That’s unusual, to say the least. In addition to tvOS, the app was released for iOS and Android.

The New Hampshire primary may be over, but Decision 2016 is only gearing up. Enter Amobee. The marketing technology and analytics company announced the launch of the Amobee Political Intelligence Dashboard, a new platform providing insights on candidate associations and sentiment, as well as voter interests and overall engagement surrounding candidate-related content. The initiative is powered by Amobee’s proprietary Brand Intelligence technology, which analyzes digital content engagements across the web, video, mobile, and social.

It’s time to dive into the latest strategies for engaging with Gen Y & Gen Z across social media. On March 1, join Cynopsis for its new Social Media Webinar, with expert panelists come from ShareThis, redpepper and AMC. Register here: cynopsis.com/webinar/new-social-media-strategies

CONTENT PROGRAMMING

Looks like he’s not leaving the jungle anytime soon. Amazon has renewed its comedy Mozart In the Jungle for a third season. The show recently won two awards at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards – the only streaming series to be so honored at the ceremony.

NEW PROGRAMMING + DEALS

AwesomenessTV is launching In Awe of You, a new fashion-oriented lifestyle brand aimed at Gen Z. The brand will be featured in Closet Wars, a new YouTube series starring the twin sisters Vanessa and Veronica Merrell. (The series is available on the AwesomenessTV YouTube channel.) Meanwhile, In Awe of You is also launching a new line of clothing and fashion accessories. You can learn more here.

RESEARCH

The ListenFirst Television Interest (TVI) Rating (TM) is a standardized measurement of the most buzzed-about TV programs on linear TV and streaming services. A complement to ListenFirst’s other syndicated data products (such as the ListenFirst Digital Audience Rating – TV), the metrics included in the rating are the purest form of showing interest digitally, since they’re organic actions that are largely unaffected by paid media. Programs that surface on the TVI leaderboards are the most hashtagged on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, as well as most searched for on Wikipedia (used as a proxy for organic search volume).

All Series (2/01/16 – 2/07/16)

Streaming Only (2/01/16 – 2/07/16)

Source: ListenFirst. The TVI Rating aggregates metrics that measure organically generated activity by fans of the TV show. The metric includes total volume of official hashtag mentions on Facebook, Google+, and Tumblr, along with Wikipedia page views (as a proxy for organic search volume) for a show as a percentage of the total volume of the same activities for all shows.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Jon Kaplan
has joined Pinterest as Head of Global Sales. Previously, he served as Google’s VP of US Sales and Operations.

Exponential Interactive
recently made a new promotion. The digital ad services vendor elevated Jessica Batt – formerly the company’s Marketing Director for APAC, India and South Africa – to Global Marketing Director. She will now be responsible for developing and overseeing the company’s global trade and event marketing strategies, as well as driving marketing awareness of the Exponential brand.
