CYNOPSISSPORTS
02.09.15

Good morning. It’s Monday February 9, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

As NBA All-Star 2015 hits New York this week, TNT is lining up 26 hours of coverage spanning Feb. 12-15 before wrapping up with the 64th annual game from Madison Square Garden on Sunday at 8p. As previously announced, for the first time, the contest will be simulcast on TNT and TBS and feature Marv Albert calling his 20th NBA All-Star Game, offering play-by-play commentary with Reggie Miller and Chris Webber, who is working his first behind the microphone along with reporters David Aldridge and Rachel Nichols.

Cynopsis Sports spoke with Craig Barry, SVP of Production and Executive Creative Director at Turner Sports, about this week’s events and the goodies in store.

Barry on New York and the fan: The fan will benefit alone from the event being in New York, one of the greatest cities on the planet and the mecca of basketball. The geography and energy lends itself to a grand, but highly accessible, experience. There will be a myriad of events that fans can interact with throughout the city. New York brings a combination of history, heritage and energy unlike any other city. The epicenter of sports and pop-culture! We’re really excited to be there. With the accessibility of the event and the passionate fans, it has the potential to be one of the best All-Star experiences ever.

On production elements: On the production side, everything is bigger. We’ve added more cameras, including additional super slo mos, and we’re introducing some new virtual technology during our NBA All-Star Game coverage this year. We’re also enhancing our coverage of State Farm All-Star Saturday Night, with the on-air treatment mirroring the in-arena presentation for the first time. The event and broadcast will be one providing an epic experience whether you are at Barclays Center or watching at home.

Our overall surround approach for these premium NBA All-Star events is more expansive than it has even been. We’ve setting up a home base at the historic Hammerstein Ballroom for Inside the NBA on Thursday and Friday and we’ve added several hours of original programming leading into our Saturday night coverage.

On sponsors: There has been a tremendous response from advertisers.  We’re sold out across linear and digital and it is our most profitable All-Star ever. Our partners, in addition to executing against sponsorship opportunities, have worked closely with our sales and integrated marketing teams to immerse their brands into our telecasts. We’re also being innovative in how we create content and dynamic in the way it is integrated into our shows.

On Marv Albert’s milestone: He’s the voice of NBA, plain and simple. A huge event like All-Star wouldn’t be the same without him.

ON THE AIR

Rece Davis is sliding into the College GameDay hosting chair for football duties via a new deal with ESPN. Davis takes over full-time hosting duties from Chris Fowler for the network’s College GameDay Built by The Home Depot franchise this year. In addition, he will continue to host ESPN’s College GameDay Covered by State Farm basketball road show. Davis will withdrawal from his role in the Thursday night ESPN College Football Primetime booth but will call select bowl games and retain his weekly play-by-play duties for college basketball. Meanwhile, Fowler, who has hosted GameDay since 1990, will now focus on his ABC Saturday Night Football duties and continue to host the Heisman Trophy presentation as well as call the world’s biggest tennis events including Wimbledon, French Open, Australian Open and ESPN’s expanded coverage of the US Open beginning this summer.

The United States Golf Association is launching a new championship, the U.S. Senior Women’s Open Championship in 2018. The championship format will mirror that of the U.S. Open: 72 holes of stroke play on four consecutive days with a cut after 36 holes with eligibility limited to professional and amateur female players, age 50 and older. “We have studied and discussed the need for this championship for many years and now we can celebrate its introduction,” said USGA President Thomas J. O’Toole Jr. “The USGA has been leading and supporting women’s golf since 1895 and it has never been stronger. We hope that current and younger players will be inspired to see national championship competition long into their playing careers.”

Univision Deportes continued its soccer streak, delivering its fourth consecutive week of the most-watched soccer matches across all networks. The Univision broadcast of America/Tigres on Jan. 31 drew 1.0 million Total Viewers and 580,000 Adults 18-49, according to Nielsen. Overall, Live Liga MX matches are averaging 278,000 Total Viewers and 175,000 Adults 18-49 per game on UDN this season, with increases of +10% and +5% in those categories.

How do you become future-proof? Which programs are most easily monetized? What is the right mix of interactions, engagement and commerce you need to succeed? Find out at the Monetizing and Maximizing Your Sports Content on Social Media Webinar on Tuesday, February 24. Leading the discussion will be Nick Freeman, VP of Sales Integration for Fox Sports Digital; Jeramie McPeek, VP of Digital for the NBA’s Phoenix Suns; OneUp Sports’ Founder and CEO Daren Trousdell; and John Pacinoa, NHL VP of Product Development and Social Media. SPONSORSHIP & PROMOTION

Ahead of All-Star week, the NBA announced that the league will reach its season-long goal to “engage more than one million New York City youth with fun, fitness-related basketball programming across the five boroughs as part of its NBA Cares All-Star efforts.” This week will see the league host basketball and fitness clinics in 100 schools and join the world’s first food rescue organization City Harvest to sort and pack 160,000 pounds of food to benefit more than 10,000 New Yorkers in need.

Meanwhile, the NHL was ranked No. 17 on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Top 100 list of the largest users of green power, making it the first professional sports league ever to achieve the distinction. The honor recognizes companies for their priorities to reduce environmental impact with the NHL offering: NHL Green, a comprehensive sustainability initiative created by the League in 2010, and the groundbreaking 2014 Sustainability Report, which documented and disclosed the League’s carbon footprint. “We are proud to be recognized for our efforts as we continue our mission to protect our environment and preserve the roots of our game," NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said.

Front Row Motorsports announced that driver David Ragan will don KFC colors on his No. 34 Ford at NASCAR’s Daytona 500 this month. This marks the second time KFC and Ragan have partnered on a superspeedway. "It’s great to have KFC back on our No. 34 for another superspeedway race," Ragan said. "We had fun with the partnership last year, we got them lots of attention running up front, and we look forward to doing that again in Daytona. It is a great feeling to be backed by such an iconic American brand like KFC, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary of cooking the world’s best-tasting chicken."

Mobile phone traffic, conversely, increased after kickoff and continued through the first half of the game, accounting for an average of 70% of uniques visiting during the game window.

Speaking of the Super Bowl, USA Today Sports’ digital platform For the Win notched its best month of all time, reeling in 16 million unique users, with 41.8 million total page views. Monday, Feb. 2 was actually its best day in history with 2.3 million unique users.

The Pac-12 Conference and Pac-12 Networks are making in-roads in China, announcing a partnership with Chinese interactive video platform LeTV to live stream Pac-12 men’s basketball games in the country this season. The deal will make LeTV the exclusive Chinese distributor of 27 games, including every game of the Pac-12 Tournament. The Pac-12 is the only Conference to stream basketball games in China this season and the 2015 Pac-12 Men’s Basketball Tournament will be the first Conference tournament streamed in its entirety for a Chinese audience.

Dish Network’s Sling TV is already beefing up its sports offerings, as the company is adding a Sports Extra upgrade that will give viewers access to SEC Network, ESPNU, ESPNEWS, ESPN Buzzer Beater, ESPN Goal Line, ESPN Bases Loaded, Univision Deportes, Universal Sports, and beIN Sports. According to the site, the package will cost an extra $5 a month.
