Good morning. It’s Thursday February 5, 2015, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
FOX Sports unveiled its programming plans for its first year as the USGA’s principal domestic media partner, lining up more than 300 hours of coverage spanning eight championships. Coverage begins in May with the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball Championship May 5-6 from The Olympic Club in San Francisco. Overall, the company slated around 320 hours of USGA championships and related programming in 2015 across its linear and digital platforms. “This is an exciting time as the USGA begins its long-term association with FOX Sports,” said USGA President Thomas J. O’Toole Jr. “Our broadcast partner has made a tremendous commitment and is dedicated to enhancing our national championships. Both players and fans will benefit from the expanded coverage.”
As for the 115th U.S. Open Championship, the company will offer 38.5 live hours of coverage from Thursday through Sunday on FOX and FOX Sports 1, marking a three-and-a-half hour increase from a year ago with 22.5 slated for the broadcast channel. In addition, FOX Deportes carries three hours of U.S. Open coverage on both Saturday and Sunday in Spanish, a first in the championship’s storied history.
It would seem that ESPN is beefing up its hockey programming. TSN reports that ESPN has won the bidding to carry the World Cup of Hockey in 2016, beating out NHL partner NBC Sports as well as FOX. The games will be played at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto with an eight-team field. ESPN has not broadcast NHL hockey since the end of the 2004-05 lockout.
NBC Sports Group is reupping programming plans and will bring back the National Pro Grid League for a second season. Coverage will expand in 2015 across NBC Sports Group’s television and digital products with NBC Sports Group set to showcase at least five regular-season Grid League matches on NBCSN, as well as all seven playoffs matches this summer. In addition, NBC will broadcast an encore presentation of the NPGL Championship.
ESPN’s 2015 season for the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series launches this weekend in Pomona with its 15th year as the exclusive television home for the series. Coverage begin with the 55th annual Circle K NHRA Winternationals. Overall, ESPN Networks will air same-day telecasts of qualifying and eliminations for all events this season, with five live eliminations programs scheduled. David Rieff returns as anchor.
ESPN’s SportsCenter storytelling brand SC Featured returns on Sunday with stories set to run on Sunday’s in the 10a edition, and re-airing at various times throughout the day, including the 11p program. The first feature will be “Miraculous: The Story of Austin Hatch,” who survived two separate plane crashes and went on to play basketball for the University of Michigan this season.
MSG Networks is extending its ties with ESPN New York 98.7FM, agreeing to a multi-year deal that keeps 98.7FM as the exclusive radio broadcaster of New York Knicks and New York Rangers games. ESPN Radio 98.7NY has broadcast Knicks and Rangers games to sports fans since 2004. The deal includes full pre- and post-game coverage for both teams, and a continuation of a multi-tiered cross-promotional effort between The Madison Square Garden Company, including the Knicks, Rangers and MSG Networks, and ESPN New York 98.7FM.
Speaking of radio, the PGA TOUR is extending its run with SiriusXM, inking a three-year deal with the company. Listeners have access to approximately 24 hours of live golf coverage each week, and live coverage from nearly 40 PGA TOUR tournaments in 2015.

ESPN is launching ESPN Hometown, dubbed a local, market-specific advertising effort that will serve as a new division of the company’s Customer Marketing and Sales group, according to Mediapost. The division will look to help national brands connect with local sports fans.
Bitcoin Payment Processor BitPay will jump into the NASCAR game, opting to become the primary brand on Justin Boston’s No. 54 Toyota Tundra and Kyle Busch Motorsports for an upcoming race.
Under Armour expanded its digital assets, snagging Endomondo and MyFitnessPal for its portfolio. The acquisitions bolster UA’s existing MapMyFitness and UA RECORD suite of applications and will look to offer “unparalleled health and fitness data and insight, in support of its universal mission to make all athletes better.”
More Super Bowl data… NBC Sports reports that the NBC Sports Live Extra app for mobile devices and tablets was downloaded more than 500,000 times during Super Bowl weekend to bring the total downloads for the app to nearly 12 million since it launched following the 2012 Olympics. In addition, NBC Sports Digital’s Super Bowl-centric Tumblr page delivered 1.4 million video views by nearly a quarter of a million unique visitors since Super Bowl Sunday.
