Viacom and fuboTV announced a carriage agreement that will extend Viacom’s entertainment brands to fuboTV’s live TV streaming service. BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Paramount Network, TV Land and VH1 will be included in fuboTV’s base package, while an expanded suite of Viacom channels will also be available in the premier package, “fubo Extra,” including BET Her, BET Jams, BET Soul, Logo, MTV2, MTV Classic, MTV Live, mtvU, Nick Music, Nicktoons, and TeenNick.
YouTube is tops when it comes to global mobile internet traffic, according to Sandvine’s Mobile Phenomena report, accounting for 35% of traffic. Netflix accounts for 15%. “Netflix’s long-form video is not something people do on mobile, as they use their peak hour binging on large screens,” said the report, while noting, “Fixed mobile substitution service plan offerings, as we are likely to see with early 5G deployments, will have far more Netflix usage.”
Mobile technology research and development company InterDigital announced that LG Electronics has extended its license to use Hillcrest Labs’ Freespace MotionEngine software in its Smart TV’s for an additional three years. The software enables the point-and-click and motion control features of the LG Magic Remote, which comes with LG’s OLED, Super UHD and UHD 4K Smart TV product lines. LG began licensing Hillcrest’s technology in 2010. “LG’s continued use of Hillcrest’s Freespace software underscores the value of the technology, and its ability to enhance and expand the user experience with Smart TVs,” said Chad Lucien, President, Hillcrest Labs.
Digital advertising technology company Amobee struck an agreement with Nielsen to provide Amobee with access to television viewing and online media consumption data. “With consumers moving seamlessly between screens and devices, the technology needs to follow them, from linear TV to digital to social media,” Aleck Schleider, SVP, Client and Data Strategy, Amobee, tells Cynopsis. “Through Amobee’s integration of Nielsen data, advertisers now have the ability to leverage rich data to create and activate strategic audiences across connected TV, digital video and other programmatic media. DoubleVerify, independent provider of marketing measurement software and analytics, has acquired Zentrick, a digital video technology company that provides middleware solutions to drive the execution and performance of online video advertising for brands, platforms and publishers. The Zentrick engineering teams will continue to operate from offices in Ghent, Belgium. The transaction was completed as an all cash, all stock offer on February 15.
Stitcher unveiled additions to its Stitcher Originals and Earwolf networks. Spending on digital channels like desktop, mobile, search and social media is expected to pass traditional media formats in the U.S. this year, according to eMarketer, while spending on non-digital TV, radio, print and billboards is projected to drop to 46% in 2019, from 51% last year. For the first time, the combined share of Google and Facebook ads will drop, despite record revenues, as Amazon’s share grows.
Google announced it will now serve advertisements built for AMP HTML (using the Accelerated Mobile Pages framework) and on regular web pages. Testing showed that moving from a standard HTML page to an AMP page with the same HTML5 ad improved the click-through rate by 26%; move the ad to an AMP page with AMPHTML ads and CTR increased by 48%.

MIPTV announced the MIP Buyers Exchange, an online service offering exhibitors pre-scheduled one-on-one buyer meetings. “This accelerates the process of making new contacts from different countries and genres in a fast-changing industry,” said Laurine Garaude, Director of TV at Reed MIDEM, which organizes MIPTV. Garaude points to the success of pre-arranged agendas at Reed MIDEM’s regional content events, MIP Cancun for Latam and MIP China in Hangzhou. The international market for content development and distribution takes place in Cannes, France from April 8-11.
ITV Studios Global Entertainment unveiled its new spring drama slate to international buyers at its second annual Drama Festival. Among the new titles from ITV Studios’ production labels and independent producers was Mammoth’s Screen’s World on Fire, the drama for BBC One which tells the story of World War Two through the lives of ordinary people from all sides of the conflict.

With three episodes left in the first half of its second season, WE tv’s Love After Lockup scored series highs in total viewers and all key demos. In Live+3 ratings, episode 211 delivered 1.4 million viewers, up +21% from the previous week, and 890,000 A25-54, up +24% from the previous week. Over its first 11 episodes of the half-season, the series has grown total viewers by +120% and by +119% in the demo.
Up against the NBA All-Star game on Sunday, AMC’s The Walking Dead slipped to a series low (but still high) 1.7 rating among A18-49 and 4.5 million viewers, down 15% versus the prior week in the demo and 12% in viewers.
Preemptions for the 2019 State of the Union address did many of the top syndicated shows in access no favors, particularly in West Coast markets during the session ending February 10. Only four magazines in the top seven avoided a dip: first place Entertainment Tonight (season high 3.3 Live+SD national Nielsen rating, up 3% from the week before); TMZ (1.4, unchanged); Daily Mail TV (series best 1.1, steady) and Page Six TV (season high 0.7, steady). Family Feud (season high 6.7, unchanged) was the only game show in the top four not to decline.
