News Corp. struck a three-year deal with Google that it said includes the development of a subscription platform, shared ad revenue via Google’s ad technology services, the cultivation of audio journalism and “meaningful investments in innovative video journalism by YouTube.” Google will add News Corp. news sites to Google News’ “Showcase,” including The Wall Street Journal, The New York Post, the UK’s Times, Sunday Times and The Sun, as well as Australian titles. Australian lawmakers have proposed a law requiring tech and social media companies to pay more for news on their sites.
Facebook has a different strategy for Australia. The proposed law “fundamentally misunderstands the relationship between our platform and publishers who use it to share news content,” said William Easton, Managing Director, Facebook Australia & New Zealand. “It has left us facing a stark choice: attempt to comply with a law that ignores the realities of this relationship, or stop allowing news content on our services in Australia. With a heavy heart, we are choosing the latter.” Rather than following through on plans to launch Facebook News Down Under, Easton said the company will “prioritise investments to other countries.”
