The Chiefs’ comeback win over the 49ers in the Super Bowl tipped FOX’s presentation upwards, as the game topped 102 million across FOX, FOX Deportes and streaming platforms, that is up slightly over the cumulative number of last year’s game to rank as the tenth most-watched Super Bowl of all time. On FOX alone, the telecast average 99.9 million viewers, according to Nielsen. Highlights for FOX included a 26% uptick for the pregame show over last year’s pregame coverage, with 21.6 million on the network. Locally, Kansas City posted a 55.7/89 rating/share, the market’s best Super Bowl rating since 2014 while San Francisco notched a 48.6/83 rating/share, the market’s best for a Super Bowl since 2016. Meanwhile, the Pepsi Super Bowl LIV Halftime Show with Jennifer Lopez and Shakira drummed up 103 million viewers, up 4% over last year’s performance.
PROGRAMMING
Continuing the theme, FOX Deportes reports that the channel set a Spanish language Super Bowl viewership record with an average of 757,000 viewers on Sunday. That is up 16% over the previous record, set for Super Bowl LIII, also by FOX Deportes, and up 60% over last year’s Super Bowl broadcast by ESPN Deportes.
The Super Bowl set records in Canada, where the matchup drew an average audience of 9.5 million viewers across CTV, TSN and RDS, per Numeris. That ranks as the most-watched Super Bowl ever n the country, with nearly 18.7 million unique Canadian viewers tuning into some portion of Super Bowl LIV. Audiences peaked at 12.1 million viewers during the halftime show.
Golf Channel tees off on the new season of collegiate golf with a preview of the spring season via the half-hour College Golf Spring Preview special, airing Wednesday at 5:30p. Hosted by Gary Williams, Paige Mackenzie and Ryan Lavner from GOLF Channel’s worldwide headquarters in Orlando and joined by Steve Burkowski from the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the special will discuss and debate the top teams, student-athletes, key tournaments and storylines to watch in the coming months. In addition, College Golf Talk, the newest edition to NBC Sports’ slate of golf podcasts, posts a new episode on Wednesday previewing the spring college golf season.
Celebrating Major League Soccer’s 25th season, the league will unveil the full collection of new 2020 MLS kits via an event on Wednesday night in New York City, carried on MLSsoccer.com and the official MLS app. Among the faces set to sport the new gear of their favorite club will be Houston Texans wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, actor Colin Hanks, Dude Perfect and Ninja .In addition to the collection, the league will also the reveal of the new name and number font that will be used in MLS during the upcoming season.
NASCAR, New Smyrna Speedway and NBC Sports confirmed the 54th Annual World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing from New Smyrna will stream live from Feb. 7-15 on Trackpass on NBC Sports Gold. Coverage will include the ARCA Menards Series East opener, the Skips Western Outfitters 175 on Monday, Feb. 10.

The winner of the 6th annual Super Clio was named, as advertising experts named the Super Bowl’s top ad, weighing factors such as how hard it is to convince the client of a certain direction, how difficult the execution must have been, even how hard it had to be to get a certain celebrity to pick up the phone. This year’s winner was Snickers for the #SnickersFixTheWorld spot by BBDO New York/ AMV BBDO. “The Super Bowl is the first major advertising event of the year, it’s an opportunity for agencies and brands to take storytelling risks and telegraph the trends we’ll see emerge as the year goes on,” said Clio president, Nicole Purcell. “It’s a competition for marketers to put on their best performance as much as it is for the players on the field and it’s so fun for us to host this special judging session and award the creative team that delivered such a timely and lighthearted viewing experience to a huge live television audience.”
Meanwhile, YouTube unveiled stats across Google and YouTube on the top trends, searches, ads and memes of the Super Bowl, noting that viewership of Super Bowl ads on YouTube during the game rose about 30% from last year. Top ads by gameday views were led by Amazon’s #BeforeAlexa spot, topping Facebook’s Ready to Rock commercial at number two. Rounding out the top five were Jeep’s Groundhog Day spot, Hyundai’s Smaht Pahk homage and T-Mobile’s commercial featuring Anthony Anderson and his Mama.
SiriusXM signed on to return as a primary sponsor of NASCAR’s Martin Truex Jr. in 2020, expanding its deal with Joe Gibbs Racing. The satellite radio broadcaster will be on Truex’s No. 19 Toyota for five races this season, including Sunday’s Busch Clash at Daytona International Speedway, Martinsville Speedway (May 9), both races of the Pocono Raceway doubleheader (June 27-28) and at New Hampshire Motor Speedway (July 19). |

ESPORTS Torque Esports Corp.’s tournament and broadcast operations group, UMG Media, announced an official partnership with Xbox Game Studios to operate and broadcast the Gears 5 Esports Challenger Series Finals. As part of the deal, UMG’s studio team is streaming the official Gears Esports Challenger Series Finals every Wednesday for both North America and Latin America. Broadcasts began on Jan. 22 and run through to the end of the season. “UMG’s commitment to the Gears community made them the ideal partner for this production,” Roddy Adams, Director of Partnerships at Microsoft said. ‘Our goal is to create a home to showcase the up-and-coming talent in our game through this weekly stream. Their group possesses the background knowledge and expertise to make this broadcast a success for our players and viewers.”
Real Madrid star Gareth Bale announced plans to launch a new esports team titled ellevenesports, announcing on Twitter than the new org would focus on FIFA and adding content creators to the tea. In addition, the new organization was also recruiting new players for as many as 11 different esport titles that range from Fortnite, Apex Legends and PUBG to CSGO, Call of Duty and Overwatch. Other titles include Dota 2, Rainbow Six, Rocket League and Streetfighter.
