IN THE NEWS
Grupo Televisa and Univision have completed a joint venture deal to form TelevisaUnivision, combining content from both broadcasters. “This combination will create a business without comparison in the global media landscape,” said TelevisaUnivision CEO Wade Davis. “Over the past year both companies have transformed themselves, reaching levels of financial performance and audience resonance that has not been seen for years.” On the way is an advertising-based Spanish-language streaming platform, slated to debut in the first half of 2022, with a subscription-based product in the second half of the year.
ABC Owned Television Stations launched new 24/7 live and local streaming channels, offering news, weather and more from WABC New York; KABC Los Angeles; WPVI Philadelphia; WLS Chicago; KTRK Houston; KGO San Francisco; WTVD Raleigh-Durham, N.C.; and KFSN Fresno, GA, as well as content from ABC’s lifestyle platform Localish. “The launch of our 24/7 live and local streaming channels answers the call of our audiences who want more options and ways to view their favorite news and shows,” said Chad Matthews, President, ABC Owned Television Stations.
Rachel Maddow will take a hiatus from her MSNBC primetime show to work on other projects. Guest hosts will take Maddow’s place during the break, expected to last a few weeks. Maddow inked a multi-year agreement with MSNBC and NBCUniversal last year that calls for her to develop new projects across the company.
Publicis Media announced the launch of a “consciously inclusive marketplace,” DIME (diverse and inclusive media exchange), aimed at providing better access to diverse publishers serving underrepresented communities, and existing publishing partners that adhere to Publicis’ set of inclusive values. Incubated at its Spark Foundry unit, DIME is also available to clients of its Starcom and Zenith units. Publicis has partnered with independent news and information verification service NewsGuard to ensure the publishers it works with “adhere to responsible journalism to further strengthen the marketplace.”
The New York Times has purchased online word game “Wordle.” The game, released to the public in October 2021 and played by millions of people (and, we’re guessing, many Cynopsis readers), will join the Times’ Games portfolio, and continue to be free of charge. Wordle creator Josh Wardle – now wealthier by seven figures – tweeted that he is working with the Times “to make sure your wins and streaks will be preserved.”
DISTRIBUTION
AMC Networks and Comcast Cable inked a new, multi-year distribution agreement. “We are excited to continue and also expand our longstanding partnership with Comcast through a new agreement that includes not only continued carriage of our cable networks, but also our fast-growing targeted streaming services including AMC+, which was made available first to Xfinity customers,” said Josh Reader, President of Distribution and Development for AMC Networks. “2022 will be the biggest year of original programming in our company’s history, and Comcast’s Xfinity customers will have a front row seat for every second of it.”
Circle Network struck a new distribution agreement with the National Cable Television Cooperative. “Our distribution with NCTC opens up the door to hundreds of new independent cable and broadband companies,” said Circle Network GM Drew Reifenberger. Circle Network currently reaches 100+ US markets.

TECH TALK
SiriusXM’s SXM Media introduced AudioID powered by AdsWizz, a listener identity solution for marketers. With an algorithm that accepts and matches a variety of consented listener signals and inputs then weighs them accordingly, the identity solution responds to ad requests by finding or creating unique, anonymized AudioIDs. These IDs can then be tapped into for reach and forecasting, frequency capping, advanced first-party targeting, enhanced measurement, and more.

STREAMING
For what it’s worth: Joe Rogan promised to “do better” amid backlash over Covid-19 claims aired on his popular Spotify podcast, “The Joe Rogan Experience.” After Neil Young and Joni Mitchell yanked their music from Spotify in protest of Rogan’s podcast, and Spotify CEO Daniel Ek announced the service is adding content warnings and disclaimers for any episodes discussing Covid, Rogan said in an Instagram post, “I would like to talk to some people who have differing opinions on the podcasts in the future. I do all the scheduling myself and I don’t always get it right.”
After launching almost a year ago with a campaign during the Super Bowl, Paramount+ is at it again. The new iteration of the platform’s “Mountain of Entertainment” campaign continues to bring together a mismatch of characters from across Paramount+ properties, hosted and also voiced over by Tim McGraw (“1883”). Running over approximately two months, the four-spot ad campaign will include spots during the Winter Olympics, March Madness, the NBA All Star Game, “The Grammy Awards,” MLB opening night and other high-impact moments.
Many viewers who sign on to streaming services for the release of event programming don’t stick around once they’ve seen it. According to measurement company Antenna, about half of viewers who signed up within three days of Disney+’s “Hamilton,” “Wonder Woman 1984” on HBO Max and “Greyhound” on Apple TV+ had canceled the service within six months.
